Combating spam on a Wordpress site

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had any solid advice for stopping spam signups to a wordpress site?

The type of site is a classified listing theme (it's BristolBedandBreakfast.net) and the amount of spam signups is ridiculous. People (bots) are signing up with the hopes that they can post an ad listing on the site with a link... only it's pointless on my sites because you need to make a payment to make the listing live.

But the spammers don't know this, so accounts are being created anyway. It's not a problem in that they do any damage, but the main problem is that every time a spammer signs up, I receive an email notification. When you have a lot of these sites and a lot of spammers signing up to each of them... the amount of incoming email is enough to bring your server down, never mind the inconvenience!

I've used advice found on support forums for the theme I'm using, but spam is still a problem.

Recaptcha is as good as useless as software can just solve the codes pretty easily.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks,

Matt

If the problem is Sign-Ups you can easily fix that by going into your WP admin panel and select Settings > Reading....and make sure that "Anyone can Register" is not enabled.

If you the problem is more about comments then either disable comments or just activate Askimet (it's installed my default of WP) and just empty the spam folder once per day. Don't even read the comments, just delete them.

Askimet is fairly good so any genuine comments won't get put in there.

Okay but surely that will affect legit users that want to signup to the site?
