Do you really need money to start IM?

Lately, I've seen several threads like I have $300, I have $1000, I have $10,000 to invest. People do really believe that if they have a certain amount of money to start, their success is almost guaranteed, or, it will be easier for them to make money online.

This is a common misconception in IM. IM is not a high yield investment program where you need money to invest. If you are a newbie who want to use your money instead of learning, it is almost guaranteed that you will fail miserably... IM is more on high effort, correct planning, right learning, focus, and motivation. There is no shortcut. There are some advantages of using money but the risk is high. Some people buy a number of courses without completing one, jumping from one to another, until they felt frustrated and exhausted. Some people buy some so-called established websites then later on throw it away because they don't have the skills and capabilities to manage.

IM is very easy if you learn the basics. It is only getting complicated for newbies because of people who are selling different IM products. When I am talking about "very basic", its all about promoting products or services, traffic, SEO, and lists. You just need to research about these things and you are good to go..

Keep your money and start learning. A college student needed to go to school and study 4 to 5 years to get a job that pays lower than what a successful IM is earning. Why it is so hard for you to give at least 6 months of learning while starting to earn?

    Adie,

yes I agree with your article, I think that being successful at IM you need to be able to use ideas and your imagination to find things that people will be willing to pay for.

Money alone will probably not guarantee success in internet marketing, although of course a lot of people have paid a lot of money to set up websites and promote them - and gone on to make fortunes.

That is one of the benefits of the internet age: if you have a good idea, you do not usually need invest a lot of money in it to make some worthwhile profits.

Okay, you don't NEED money to make money online, but it sure makes it a hell of a lot easier to drive targeted traffic to your webpage. No matter what way you slice and dice it, cash on hand for advertising is far more beneficial than spending 6 months ranking websites or getting traffic with free methods. If you have cash to buy traffic you will shave a lot of time off your efforts. It sounds like you're suggesting that having money to invest is worse than having none, which is preposterous.

The main reason people fail is because they go the free route. Years ago this was simple, now it's more of a gamble, especially if you're a newbie. No need to buy products, just buy traffic, build a list and promote your aff offers. Make money, reinvest and scale up. The bottom line is that you either pay with your money or pay with your time, and my time is very precious to me.

It's good to hear people to saying this! I am a total newbie at this Internet Marketing business and it is reassuring me a lot! I hear so many people saying that to “make money you need money” and I have always thought in my head that is not always the case. I do agree with you “retsced”, I think it would make it a lot easier when it comes to marketing & promoting your product/services. I know obviously you can make it online with just $10 and a great idea, but how much money would you say is necessary to help ensure that success ?

You don't necessarily need money in IM. You can create a free blog and write good content and target a certain niche or you can be an affiliate and sell products for free. Money helps though with having funds to advertise, hiring a mentor, learning courses, etc. Some people would rather pay for convenience where they don't have to learn things on their own because IM can cause information overload.

Having a few bucks to invest in your business is ideal.

But do you need it? No

You will just have to buckle down, and put the legwork in till you are able to make some money, and reinvest it into your business.

P.S. There is always free blogger blogs until you can afford to invest into your own self hosted Wordpress blog.

Ok so would you recommend starting out with a free blogging platform and making money through AdSense... or investing a few bucks and setting a membership wordpress site offering great contect to a specific content? I understand you can make money through both techniques but which is likely to be the most succesful ?

      NO!

Whatever you decide to do, don't do that.

Spend the $10-$20 on your own website.

I would agree with 99% off what you say. However, I think a minimum of about $20 is required for a domain and some basic web hosting for almost anything you do in Internet Marketing. As to the rest of it kind of depends on what you want to go into. For instance video marketing has some things you need like video editing/creation software. If you try and get by using the free stuff or making cheesy slide show videos you will probably get booted from You Tube so you are better off starting with Camtaisa or ScreenFlow instead of struggling with the free stuff. Realistically you would also need a fairly new midrange computer to run that stuff. Blogging would be cheaper, but you would need to buy additional domains.

I also think buying the full version of Photoshop has its merits for anyone considering getting into the business. Sure you can do basic photo editing with the free stuff that comes with windows or a Mac and then maybe GIMP, but if your an IMer it is going to be cheaper to buy stock graphics for blog designs, logos and so forth and edit them yourself. Otherwise you are going to be to paying someone else to do basic text changes for you over and over again. (Those free/cheap programs don't really let you edit PSDs to make changes to the text. )So again you can start off with the free stuff, take the time to learn it and you will get the job done maybe 50% of the time or you can fork over the cash and just start learning the industry standard from the get go.

Also a War Room membership is a great value as you get lots of free how to's. So sure spend as little as possible when you start out, but you will need some tools and often those tools cost money.

I think I spent around $100 bucks to get into the business back in 1998: Domain $35(only one option back then), Cheap Hosting Back Then ($29.95 month) and I bought a web page editor for $35.

I've read that you should start to invest about 20% of your profit to a buisness development only after you have a stable cash flow from this business for 3-5 months.

And it was about offline business, for IM it's even more true. Because in IM you should clearly understand what you are buying for and what you are paying for. But to understand this you need to be very good in it yourself.

Is your time free? I know mine isn't. So if you think busting your ass 12 hours a day means free you're wrong. Advertising is a must, and one way or another you'll pay for it because free traffic ain't free.

The big problem I see is people being afraid to pull the trigger. They'll buy a 2k course no problem but spending that first hundred on advertising freaks people out.

Just remember, you're starting a business, not a hobby. Treat it like a business, you'll get paid like a business. Treat like a hobby and the same holds true.

    And all businesses have expenses.

Exactly my friend knowing what I know now and if I were starting in this business today I would want: Camtasia, Photoshop, a Domain, Web Hosting, a War Room Membership and a decent midrange computer. So it would be good if you could bring $1500 - $2,000 to the table.

Does a newbie who knows nothing and little desperate to make money need to know camtasia, photoshop, war room membership? It is already understood that if you want to start making money online, you must have your own computer....

If he/she wants to make any money they need to develop a knowledge of how to do something. A newbie could go into video marketing and start camtasia with the 30 day free trial. The problem is most newbies don't want to take the time to learn anything. For example they buy some over hyped WSO that tells them just to use product images from Amazon to create a slide show and because they are newbies and are looking for an easy out then they are back here a few days later complaining about how their YouTube account got shut down. If your a newbie take my advice and spend some time learning something before you slop something out and your IM career ends up being over before you make your first sale.

I did not mention $0 and I never mentioned any fiverr flyer in this thread. I think you are referring to other CB thread i created a week ago... I mentioned $100, $300, $1000, and even $10,000 so anything below $100 is acceptable to me... or to be specific, $50 and below..

Talking about the other thread, it's $5 if you already have a domain and hosting.

      Domain $10
      Hosting $3/month
      Fiver $5

So for less than $20, you can start.. not $100.
But it's just an example. You can create free blogger, apply with adsense, and make money for nothing.. If you want to have your own website then buy a domain and hosting and do whatever affiliate program you want... all less than $50

A complete newbie doesn't need that much cash to begin with. Anything between $50 and $500 is enough to get started, find a good course about traffic and conversion, then start buying traffic. (but again, how does a newbie know which course to go for without some knowledge on what factors to look for?)

Having said that, I should also add that money cannot substitute knowledge. So, if someone is coming in with a bunch of money and expects to hit it big, they have another think coming.

I guess the best strategy (for those with lots of cash to invest) is to hold the money for some time, gather some knowledge from free sources, identify and get a quality course then invest later.

I personally strongly agree as what you are saying. IM takes consistent, disciplined and focused, it is hard just to spend much money to make money quickly and make you rich. everything takes a PROCESS. that needs to do is learn and focus in one topic to make money.

You do not need money to invest in IM as there are so many free alternatives, however it is ideal to have some sort of money available to invest in a business model as it can be much more effective and efficient.

I 100% agree that learning is extremely important as money cannot 'make' you understand how things work on the internet, this is the part where all successful IMers had to roll their sleeves up and get on with it. Learn before you earn!

The knowledge is priceless once grasped and your money will be spent more effectively on business activities in the future. That's my opinion anyways..

Actually if you learn a skill you can leverage that skill and maybe get a part of equity in someones business, or, maybe they will fund your efforts.

An example is if you write articles/create products/computer programmer (pick anything) really well, and, you approach someone about a partnership saying you'll do x,y,z, and, get a piece of the action. Just some food for thought.

What is the saying, "if you can't start a business with no money then you aren't being creative enough"(?)

Ok I just made that up, but, you know what I mean.

It's going to be really hard to make money online if you don't have at least $100 to spend in the beginning. At the very least you should have a blog documenting your journey. That will cost you about $60/year. If you add an autoresponder with Aweber on top of that then you're looking at $300/year.

      Hi Guys and Gals,

Any serious business requires a certain amount of capital to start. The beauty of marketing on the internet, compared with marketing in the old fashioned way, is you can start:

      * On a shoestring budget (No fancy offices or warehouses or staff or inventory).

      * Relatively quickly. Note the 'relatively', because that's where marketing on the internet comes down to earth and faces exactly the same problem as a traditional, bricks and mortar, business - getting prospects and customers.

Sadly, the sheer ease and speed with which you can get a web site or blog up on the internet lulls folks into a false sense of what is possible. Because that's the easy bit. Then comes the hard work (not a phrase you'll find mentioned much in internet marketing circles) of getting folks to come to your site and actually buy stuff.

That's the gaping hole in all those 'Business in a box' and 'Turn-key web sites' - you have to get the traffic.

Fortunately, it is possible to learn all the skills, including the key skills of getting traffic. But it's a slow process. So forget the lies of the gooroos, who claim they can make you rich by Friday.

And think of it this way. If you're training for any job - even a lowly Macjob there would be a certain level of training needed to succeed. But to make a decent living you would need years of hard training to become - say - a doctor or dentist.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to spend my life looking at folk's mouths (could be even worse, if you're a doctor). So, not only is sitting in the sun, tapping away on your lap top or iPad far more congenial, you can actually learn on the job, increasing your income as you go. For example ...

I have web sites I set up in 2007 that I haven't touched since, yet they are still paying me money to this day - literally (because today is when my weekly ClickBank payment drops into my bank by wire direct from Wells Fargo Bank). Incidentally, those are nothing to do with 'Make money on line'. They are in the alternative health niche.

Now, I had to spend some time, creating products, making videos, writing articles, creating HubPages and Squidoo lenses and the like to generate the traffic.

But, once those assets were paying me an income, I was free to invest my time in creating more of the same to add another income stream .. and the another - and so on.

But here's the key fact ...

I did that without the slimmest of promises that I would ever see a single red cent for all my effort. But now, of course, I'm still benefiting from my efforts, five years later.

And that's the psychological barrier most folks have to get over before they will see any profit on line, because most folks' money-making experience is limited to being on the job treadmill. And - for all its faults - on the job treadmill, they can look forward to a guaranteed amount of money for a certain amount of effort.

      But not so in business.

So my answer to Adie's question (at long last) is: You don't need a lot of money to start in IM.

What you really need costs nothing.

It's the sea change in mind set you need to make. Be prepared to understand it won't be quite as easy or as fast as the gooroos, keen to sell you the latest 'magic button software to make you a millionaire by Friday' claim. And - when the going gets tough and you're not seeing any traffic for all your FaceBook posts and your YouTube videos DON'T be tempted to change course and go for the next 'Super Tuesday Mega Launch'.

Stick doggedly with this simple four step plan:

      1. Locate a profitable 'evergreen' market.

      2. Decide if you are going to sell your own product or be an affiliate.

      3. Create a web site.

      4. Attract traffic.

That's the way the 3% who really do make money on line do it. So don't try and re-invent the wheel.

Stick to this simple plan, because it will eventually bear fruit - but jumping onto something else won't.

Then when your first web site is paying you an income you will be doing exactly what Bill Gates and Donald Trump do to create their wealth: you will own an income producing asset.

Then you can move on to create another income producing asset and then another and ... (I'm sure you get the idea!).

      Here's wishing you great success!

You can have a million dollar and be stupid and you'll likely lose money in business. You also have a million dollars and be smart in business and you'll likely make money. Therefore what makes money is brains and not money. Not everybody has a million dollars, but a lot of people are smart lol

Yes, it is very possible to get started with IM with Zero out of pocket investment. And IMO it take the same amount of effort to be successful/or make money. Internet marketing like any other business or any new thing is going to require you learn new skills/or rules in order to win.

Getting started for no out of pocket cash is about being able to locate trustworthy Free resources, and there are plenty of them out there. You just have to know where to look.

Finding products to sell and being able to correctly promote them is much more difficult than finding things like; Free hosting, domains, auto-responders and places to post ads/or do email marketing, (hence, driving traffic).

I currently checking out a complete video course that gives a step by step process that will allow anyone to start by using All Free resources. I must admit there is quite a bit to learn...approx. 30 video in the pack, but so far I have not found anything in it that was difficult. The instructions are top-notch. Point is there is no requirement to spend any out of pocket cash to get started.

Adie, you;re right on target with your post....thanks for a great post.

Adie, thank you thank you thank you for this post. It is an important one for newbies to take head of. I think the misconception that if you have money to start an IM business, then you are ahead of the game.

This is probably opposite from the truth.

More than likely your money will simply go fast as you fumble for that push-button solution.

Whatever method you chose, it is going to take hard work and sticking to it to be able to really turn a decent profit.

This why no huge IM marketers ever start with, "I had $50000 and reinvested it into IM and now I'm in the millions!" All the headlines say, "How a drunk broke womanizer with only one shoe and a broken finger went to earning $5 million in one year!" This is far more believable....

My point is this: If you are flat broke, (as we were when we started,) you will fight for every penny and cherish your first $7 sale.... This is key to this business. After you make your first $7 you will have learned a lifetime of useful knowledge and you will have the ability to take in new information, apply it, and learn more...

      Cheers!

This can work with experienced IMer's but for newbies who knows nothing, it will give a negative rather than positive result.

Most success stories started with almost nothing...

Well, I think you need at least $100 to start.

I mean, other than paying for domain and hosting, you might also consider to hire a web designer and an autoresponder service.

Second, you might also want to buy content.

All of those can be done by yourself, but if you are a completely new, it is okay to pay extra to outsource for the heavy works while you learn marketing your site.
