[Fill In The Blank] CONTENT IS KING...

Simple question...

Which format do you prefer when it comes to consuming content, training, etc.?

Why?

Does it make a difference if it's FREE or PAID content?

One on one style, I can get more out of walking throught the process with someone that has already gone throught the process I'm want to learn.

Like a Skype session or 1 on 1 email coaching, etc.?

I prefer text as i'm a visual learner and I hate having to fast forward and rewind in video/audio, but that's just me

  • The product "format" I prefer depends on the "content".

I would rather watch a "video" that shows me exactly how to do a workout move properly without hurting my self, as opposed to written instructions in a book, where I would be required to interpret the meaning of "bend to the side but not too much."

When a book comes out from an author who's writing style or personality clicks with mine, I will usually purchase both the book and audio book versions, especially if the author is female and has a voice that I enjoy listening too.

I do NOT want to watch a video that has a plain white background with black text read by some God awful male voice (pretending to sound like a professional voice over, but so not the case) reading me the exact same text that's on the screen as if I'm 3 years old and can't read for my self. Give me an article or eBook instead.

I could go on, but you get my point. Each type of content has its place.

Very good point. One of the better explanations I've seen regarding format preferences.

Out of curiosity...If someone you really liked and trusted sent your to one of those plain white background with black text videos AND the subject was of interest to you and the content was SOLID and genuinely valuable, would you watch it?

Or would you pass (i.e. not even watch it) before you were able to judge the quality of the content due to the format in which it was presented?

I personally do not sit through such videos. However, this is just my preference. There are thousands of folks out there who are willing to do so in order learn something new. Thus there is a target market for this.

In my opinion, coming from a multimedia perspective, those type of videos are dated. They represent a PowerPoint slide presentation that would have been shown back in 1990 when Microsoft launched the software. Today is 2012 and therefore there's no excuse to insert text into a white background and call it a video.

It is even more insulting that in the IM niche to date, this type of video today is still part of a paid membership.

Wow me with at least 80% of moving visual content (and that does not mean stock photos of a guy holding a phone). Show me charts that are relevant, numbers, pretty girls dancing, anything...

Hope you keep this in mind for when you create your videos.

I always prefer text over any other style because I am too a visual learner. I do not like sitting and watching videos, etc. Give me something to read and I'm good to go.

          Another good point.

One could include relevant charts, numbers, etc. within a text document as well.

It definitely depends on the content and the quality of the presentation.

Some things are better in a book. Some thing do work much better in video.

I hate the videos of text scrolling by, even more so if someone is on the video reading it word for word. If you want me to read text, give me a PDF and let me read at my own speed. My time is too valuable to be forced to read at someone else's speed. If you are going to do the voice over with text, at least use PowerPoint slides with bullet points and explain each in your own words.

Video are great if the are direct and to the point. I hate long rambling videos....or text for that matter.

I greatly dislike most webinars. Everyone seems to be using them for everything these days. Firstly, most are just really long sales pitches, which annoys me, unless I am really interested in the topic. Some people use them for training, which drags it out, and makes it less focused. There seems to be a need to be social on them (Type in where you are from, type in if you like making money, type in if your answer to this question, etc...), or answering tons of questions from people that clearly have not been paying attention, and going through remedial explanations of everything. This can turn 30 minutes of information into a 2 or 3 hour webinar.

By the way, this is not about the content format, but if you do training, try to separate the remedial explanations from the real content. If someone does not know how to save a file to a folder on their computer, or do basic navigation in wordpress, or use FTP, then they need some basic tutorials about how to do those things. Make them separate, and don't bog down the real training with that stuff.

For either audio, or video, the speaker needs to be able to express themselves well, and be focused. Some people are not cut out to do that, and should simply not use those methods.

My guess is to be everywhere.

Personally I prefer reading content, but I feel like I know people much better when I watch/listen to them. That means I'm more likely to buy from them.

I think you're leaving money on the table if you don't do video/podcasts.

I prefer a combination of both written in pdf format and audio.

I like the written format for ease of quickly locating and returning to something and reread it. I like the audio as I have a tendency to remember more of what is said verbally almost like a friend is talking to me.

That being said, I'd like to add that the audio cannot be in a monotone voice with no voice inflections as well as not being a synthesized voice but rather a real human voice. I neither want to fall asleep to a white noise drone nor laugh when the content isn't meant to be humorous while trying to learn something.

But the versatility in having both is what I really like. In having both, I can read/listen according to where I am and what I'm doing. It fits my lifestyle much better by giving me options.

I love content to learn from in video format.

I just learn much better through videos than a bunch of text on a page.

If the text is engaging and done well, then that isn't a problem with me as well.

I would say text. Videos and audios are fine, but if you were going to do this, provide the transcript of them also so that people can read, skim, or do whatever they want to do with the transcription.

I like written text because then I can skim to the parts I really need to read. But videos are good when I need a visual aid on how to do something. I think it's best to have both worlds, a combination of both with make you the most successful in what you're trying to do.

I voted text although I'm not quite sure why. Theoretically audio/video should work better, but for some odd reason text enters my mind with more ease (and stays there).

It totally depends on what it is, though I generally prefer text.

If it's a self-improvement product, then I want something to read AND something to listen to. Reading it helps me understand what it's all about, but I also want to re-program my mind when I'm doing other things.

If it's teaching me how to use a website or do something new, then I prefer a step-by-step video (but not to the point of stupidity) first, and a written guide as a source of reference.

Most of us know that there are different learning styles, but there are a lot of people who don't know what their learning style is. That's why a few formats makes sense when teaching someone how to do something.

    But...when it comes to content...

    It all depends.

    All the best,
    Michael

    I prefer text.

As a side note: the only reason I'm answering this poll is because it's on a text-based forum. If you were asking this question on YouTube, I wouldn't have participated because I never would have seen your video. Same thing if you were asking via an audio Skype chat, teleconference or webinar.

Point is, the responses you get here might be a wee bit biased towards text-based content.

In terms of self-improvement and mind mastery, I choose audio, hands down. I've listened to countless hours of audio books and self-improvement courses in my car, on my computer, or through my MP3 player. It's convenient and I'm always learning and growing on the go. It's dangerously impractical to read while driving, or even while walking in public places.

Audio helps me make the most of my time and maximize my learning efficiency. Some things I prefer video, but audio has given me incredible results at a wonderful level of convenience.

I like a combination of text with images and video. The video should be for showing how to do something and leave out all of the fluff. I do not like to sit through 30 minutes of a persons life story to get to the information I need.

Text, because I would prefer to read at my speed, than to listen at your talking speed.

I can generally consume the material faster at my reading speed, than any other speed dictated by others. And if I see something that is complicated to understand, I can decide to re-read it until I understand it.
