Is Buying and Selling Domains still viable in 2012

So I just wanted to put this out there since I was wondering if buying and selling domains is still a viable business right now? I'm sure we've all heard of the big hitters in this industry like Gene Pimentel (love his free wso in the war room btw) and others that cashed in back in 2008 and around there but is it still something that can be done today? I really do like this business model and the thought of owning pieces of internet real estate has always appealed to me.

Anyways just wanted to know how anyone else felt. Thanks!

    YES.

As long as there are markets and websites/platforms to be created, there will always be opportunities to sell domains.

As long as the internet exists I would assume that website will continue being sold.

.Com's are being gobbled up every day, making the only way of getting a decent .com url from someone else (eventually). That's if you really care about .com's.

And then there's also website sales.

I can't see this market declining any time soon.

If you seriously can't see the obvious answer to this question after a few google searches, then you are too lazy to be in any internet-based business...unless you have capital to invest.

I was under the impression that the WF was for helping others on all things related to IM. So why would you even need to post a response like this?

Gene Pimentel's 10 step action plan has helped immensely in getting me started. There may not be very many or if any at all of those catchy two word domains left but with so many businesses in thousands of cities promoting online, finding local keyworded domain names seems like the way to go.

I used to work for a used furniture store, selling and delivering. The owner was an old guy. He had some butt ugly stuff that I used to point to and ask, "Who would ever buy that?" He replied, with a straight face: "No matter how ugly it is, it's just a matter of time before the right person comes in and says that is just what they were looking for." He had a huge warehouse/store, had been in business a long time, and was very wealthy. That said, about one week ago I paid $20 to post a classified ad on WF to sell any and all of my domains for only $20 each at domain-name-advertising.com. I didn't sell any at all... none, nada, zip. Then, I paid $29 over at Flippa to list a couple that I thought had value. I sold one for $100 on a 3-day auction. I sold another one today for $500 on a 3-day auction with a buy-it-now option after I contacted the owner of another site that was a perfect fit. When he saw it, he went right to Flippa and bought it on the spot. So, is there a market for domains? Go over to Flippa and check out the tab "Just Sold". Most of them are for websites, but many are just for domains. I think WF is good for some things, but selling domain names is not one of them. I think it's also a matter of perception, if you put a low price on it, people attach little or no value to it. It's just a matter of time and place. Anything is only worth what one person is willing to sell it for and another is willing to pay. Domain names are cheap and require no inventory cost. Sell one for a few hundred and that is 3000% profit. Not bad. Not always easy. But not bad. Learn how to create a website and build the value and make even more money. Right? Why not.

Completely forgot about flippa you are so right. And great story thanks! I forgot that flippa is a good spot as well since many people are looking for something they can build on whether it be a website or a domain.

I think domain selling is an art and science

I wouldn't pay any money for yourname.com, but to you, your name domain is probably priceless. So again, like what Hayden mention, someday someone may come along, look at your digital real estates and decided to grab one domain which they would look to have at a premium price ...

On the other end, one "scientific" strategy I heard was that the domain flippers who go out to register domains around new companies or products based on news like successful VC fundings, product launches etc ... these VC funded companies are loaded companies and may likely receive many many rounds of fundings before they are either bought over, listed or folded. What the flipper did was, to email them and negotiate a price to buy back their name at 1000x the purchase price.

Domain business is still growing ... after all, the internet is just about 2-3 decade old ... there are many more decade before the industry totally saturated.

To follow up what Rendell said, he's right about timing. I sold one for $2300 last year, just a $10 domain name, but he wanted it and I wasnt in a hurry to sell it. I had it listed for sale until I got around to my idea. He asked how much, I said not in a hurry and planned to use it, but will let it go for $3k. We negotiated, he bought it for $2300. I just checked, it's still parked. But you know what, if he uses it, it's a great domain and it's worth it. I've done the same thing lots of other times with people who just go away and never come back. You never know. I see some domains go for BIG big bucks on Flippa, but I haven't had one of those YET. You need to be in the right place at the right time, but like they say "you gotta play to win". Besides, it's a hard habit to break. Everytime I get an idea I go check the domain name and buy it many times. I keep 'em parked on a for sale page like ForSaleByOwnerDomains.com until I get around to using it. I'm a domain junkie (I checked, the domain name is already taken). It beats paying ten bucks for a pack of smokes to kill yourself.

Has anyone tried implementing that 10 Step action plan that Gene P. put out? Where you register a local keyword name that a business would love and contact businesses to let them know its available? Anyone else making a full time income doing this?

I bought a domain from Stylate for $250 earlier this year. They don't just buy up names and sit on them, they add some value through presentation, logo design and organizing the names by possible business types that would be a good match. Worth the price to save me days of searching available names.

Domaining is a great business, and is still alive and will be few more years for sure, maybe much longer, but that depends on the Internet and development of it.
Yes, you can make a nice money from domaining even today.

For a newbie, it could be frustrating as almoust all good domains gone and he/she would probably buy or register some domain with no value. If you start learning about it before start trading than you have a good chance. You never know when you could get jackpot, and by then you will be earning nice money each month.

If you are serious about domaining and have enough knowledge, it would not be bad to quit your job and start full time domaining. But only if you are serious and with enough knowledge.

You should know that domaining with domains which are not truly premium (house.com, webdesign.com, marketing.com, carpets.com etc... I call truly premium domains) is not easy, but with good efforts will bring you money. If you will work 8 hours each day as a domainer you would earn much more than if you would sit 8 hours in some office as clerk or similar.

Why it is not just buy and sell domain few days later for ROI 5x-10x? It is! But the simpliest part is to buy and to sell. Hard work is before buying and selling. You should do your research to determine which cheap domains have value or are available for registration, then you need to buy it, then you need to do hard work to find potential end-user (its not just typing the term in Google, there are many more strategies to find potential end-users), after you find them you need to start calling or/and emailing them, and then you will sell it.

Godaddy, Sedo, Afternic etc... should be just platforms where you add your domain to be visible for potential buyers and sometimes you will sell there. But selling there is passive domaining in my opinion. You should really work and be active to sell non premium domains. It is very good to buy domain for $1-50$ and sell it for $200-$2000. Dont expect to sell crappy domain for $xx.xxx. I prefer selling more domains for $xxx or $xxxx each, than waiting with one $xx.xxx offer.

Overall, yes, buying and selling domains in 2012 still works!

Hey guys I'm new to the Warrior Forum and this is my very first post. I want to make some money from domaining and am still doing lots of research before I make an investment.

I currently have four domains registered with Godaddy.com that I bought a while back when I ventured into IM with no success.. Now, I have the four parked on Godaddy and I have them at auction too with no success so far, not even the fly stop by. The domains are:

      SuperJackpotProfits.com

      MillionaireSocietyChuck.com

      Nikolatesla-Mystery.com

      Nikolatesla-Mystery.info

I realize now that they are pretty much worthless domains, however as was stated earlier in a post, there has to be someone out there willing to buy them.

Now, should I post them on flippa and see how it goes? What tips can anyone give me so I can get rid of these domains? Thanks

Maybe I be wrong but I personally don't see any value in your domains, so the advice is you let them expire and try to get better when buying domains

Without a shadow of doubt, the answer is YES!

Social Networks, Silly Phases, Stupid Pranks & Sexy Girls (Guys if your a Gal!) will always come and go on the web, as they have over the last 25+ years

However, the one constant in the last 25+ years has been "Domain Names" regardless of what guise they come it, or what anyone thinks they are worth, until "Real Speech" to search works 100% properly 100% of the time, DN's and the recurring revenue around them will continue!

Listen - domain selling is more viable today than ever before - I'm truly excited about the many opportunities that are presenting themselves.

My 10-step-action-plan that has been mentioned a few times in this thread is still a valid method and will be for many years to come, however it has evolved into a system that I have fine-tuned called LocalDomainEmpire.com. This is where I will be focusing most of my time over the next year. I plan on establishing a six-figure *passive* recurring income just from this one system this year (and teaching others to do the same).

There are SO many ways to easily sell domain names. The key is to understand the marketplace.

    Hi Gene,

I was thinking of getting into the local domain market but it's looking a lot tougher now. Google Places seems to be taking over local searches - typically 7 of the first 10 spots on the first page are now Google Places. I would be interested to see how you plan to get around this.

I will be looking forward to more info from Genes new product about how working with local domains will work. I do agree it is still a viable business but only for those with premium domain names in their portfolio already or someone with a few thousand to invest in buying a premium DN to get the ball rolling. If you don't have either its a lot tougher I think.

in my opinion it is still pretty viable.
try to get a cheap emd domain for example, put some content on it, rank it, put adsense on it and as soon as you earn some bucks a day, flip it. ive done that a few times with an average roi of 1000% (50 bucks for the domain and sold it later when it hit the 200$/month mark for 1000$)

It's really a numbers game. I work with a lot of domainers. The more domains you have, the better chance at getting an offer. I have one guy who owns about 14000 domains. He sells 5-10 a month not less than $1k each. But don't buy bad names. Do your research. If anyone wants some tips on how to promote them, PM me.
