I don't see how growing you list has much to do with your current subscribers.

If you're looking to attract and acquire more subscribers I would survey your current pool of subscribers and find out what their most gut-wrenching problems are then create a free pdf, video squeeze page, and host a live webinar sharing the "fix" for these problems.

You'll definitely build your list rapidly if you provide them with tips that will get them immediate results.

P.S. - I have a free ebook in my signature that will give you more ideas for building your list rather quick

Offer them something valuable for free in return for their name & email. Then provide them with excellent content via your email newsletter.

They say that the money is not in the list "but in the relationship that you have with your list"

For me this means that you continue growing your list whilst continuing to add massive value to your current subscribers - email them regularly with quality freebies as well as paid stuff
