1st of all how did you collect the list

Where did the emails come from? An opt-in list on your forum. How active/responsive is the list. There's a lot more factors than the number of people on the list.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6850218].message }}
  • normally when people opt-in to your list you let them know that your not going to sell their email. Why not start marketing relevant products to your list? Then you will see how responsive they are and have a better idea of what the list is worth.

    To whom?

If it's your forum's membership list, it may be worth something to the owner of your forum (presumably yourself, at the moment?), because that's the person with whom those members have a relationship and that's the person to whom they've opted in.

But how does that make it worth anything much to anyone else?

Do those people know that you might sell the list, and have they given their permission for that, as they signed up?

You surely appreciate that if they don't, and haven't, then that means that whoever bought it would simply be spamming them? Not only would that have multiple negative effects (maybe for both of you), but it also takes the potential value away, doesn't it? The reason they're worth something to you (at least in theory) is that they've (perhaps) given you permission (albeit maybe just in your capacity as a forum administrator/owner?) to send them email. But still - that's more than they've given anyone else, isn't it?

      Ah, now that's a whole different ball-game.

      Good question.

That's inviting them actively to opt in to being transferred on to someone else's list, and solves almost all the problems mentioned above, because it makes it permission-based (as well as perhaps making the resulting, albeit smaller, list worth something to the purchaser and making it legitimate for him/her to contact those people).

Be prepared to be a little disappointed by the positive response-rate, though, especially if you haven't maintained regular contact with them. Sorry if I sound negative about that: I'm trying to sound "realistic", I hope.

As she stated though, it's not going to exactly be easy, even if you choose to keep it. From what you said, you haven't done any marketing to them yet: it's very likely you're looking at a cold list.

English and communication skills leave a lot to be desired as well, unless you'll be communicating with this list in a different language you are more proficient in.

Man, transitioning a list to a new owner can have bad effects to the next owner, like many leaving your service or website.

That is why I always never buy email subscriptions and build the list by myself.

Plus, why are you getting rid of your list? If you didn't know anything about email marketing then how did you manage to get that many??

I think there is probably more than one way to skin the cat, so to speak. Have you considered a joint venture webinar? You can find a product owner with a product that appeals to your list. Contact them about doing a webinar for your list, work out a split commission to do a special offer, and make some $$$. If you dont think you can do that yourself, let me know... I am open to set up a gateway joint venture webinar for a piece of the action ;-)

If it is your list, heck instead of selling it, use it. First just get some practice in with newsletters. Throw in a game related product every now and then.

I'll just leave this here for the op...

Edit: That wasn't supposed to be a completely blatant plug btw. I was just showing the op one way they could use their list. Start sending your list emails about kickstarter projects. Those people who need funding can then give you some value in return for you mailing to your list for them.

The one question you didn't answer was how you were able to build the list. Why did they sign up with you? For a free product? For information? Whatever that reason was - build on it by looking for a joint venture partner who has something relevant to offer. After 3 months, be prepared for a LOT of them to forget all about who you are and why you have a relationship with them. You're going to have to remind them (so they don't think you're just spamming them). I would then offer a free product (even if you already did) just to re-establish the relationship and build trust. If your first contact with them was a free product - you can offer an updated version of it, for example - or a training video showing them some cool tricks and tips. THEN, you can send them an offer - and that's where the JV partner's offer comes in.

If I were you, I wouldn't sell it. You should learn how to make money from it.

PS: If you do want to sell your list, it makes more sense to sell the domain with it.

If I were you and wanted to cash out, I would sell the domain, forum, and the e-mail list as a package.

You could get lots of money for it as a package.

You sure you want to try and monetize it? Create a "John Carlton" like email reactivating your list (with humor), and get them interested in you again. Then pitch them on some relevant Clickbank products.

The quick answer for you would be sell the whole site with the domain this way the subscribers will not be effected. 10k users you should be able to turn some coin with this list, but hard to say with out seeing more details.
