How to create a website not using WordPress

If you want to create your own website, you have hosting and don't want to use WordPress, how do you do this?

What are some programs, software, things you need to create one?

Do you have a domain? If you have a domain and hosting you can build a website with static html pages only using an html editor program like Dreamweaver (paid) or SeaMonkey (free). There's tons of others as well. Then you simply upload those pages to your site with FTP and voila!

There are a heaps of WYSIWYG editors online, doing a basic search like 'drag and drop website builder' might do the trick

learning simple HTML can allow you to work off templates, if you are in the IM niche, there are alot of minisite templates - heck, just outsource someone to save you the headache!

But yes, why NOT Wordpress. It is simple, robust and will save you time. Not to mention it will keep the Big G happy

From all the free HTML editors, I think Kompozer is the best free editor. It may be old but works pretty good on having full control.

Get to know CSS and you will be all good to go.

      Hi Guys and Gals,

Probably the best free html editor is Kompozer, from the Morzilla Firefox stable. You'll also need a FTP program to load those pages to your site and FileZilla is very good and free.

If you want a paid solution that does all the grunt work for you (including doing the ftp function at the touch of a button), then I recommend XSitePRO.

      Warmest regards,

      Paul

If I need to create a page without using Wordpress, like squeeze page, I just go the hosting CPanel >> File Manager >> New File (create a new file with .html extension) >> Select the file and click HTML Editor.

When you're on the HTML Editor you can just add your content similar if you're using Word Document.

You can also look at the source code and preview your site.

For me this is the easier way to create a one page site as you don't have to use FTP and download any software.

But if you really want to build a website, so far Wordpress is the simplest. I tried Joomla before, have more features compared to Wordpress, but if just for blogging, Wordpress is the best (from my experience of course).

    Cheers,
    Chetz

If you are under the impression that Wordpress is hard and you are looking for alternatives, then I have to tell you that Wordpress is one of the easiest ways to create a website. If your hosting has a cPanel, just go to Fantastico Deluxe and you can create a site in 10 minutes flat.

If you are just looking for alternatives, then there are Joomla and Drupal to consider.

I've used Serif Web Plus in the past. It's easy to use and is truly WYSIWYG in a way that Wordpress isn't. It's also good at handling graphics - you can place them anywhere and they stay where you put them. There's a free edition, which works well Serif Education – Develop design skills… and confidence

    Learn HTML and CSS. Seriously.

No, it is not hard. It'll help you a lot later on. It'll help you when you have problems. It'll help you create websites that are not poor WYSIWYG code.

HTML/CSS isn't programming. You don't need to be a programmer to create your own websites.

I could not possibly agree with this advice more. So many people make the mistake of grouping HTML and CSS with actual programming languages, which they definitely are not.

They are super simple, in fact. Anyone can have a pretty good grasp on how to use HTML after studying it for one full day, in my opinion. CSS might take a couple days to start becoming familiar with. That's seriously it.

From that point on, it's just practice. You practice by experimenting with the new knowledge and having loads of fun in the process. It's pretty cool once you get started, actually.

If you find it exciting to open up a blank notepad file and save it as HTML, then open it in your browser to see a webpage you have just created....then trust me, this is the only way to go! It's a very satisfying experience.

I say forget the drag and drop solutions and the WYSIWYG editors. That's just my opinion, of course. To each his own, obviously.

But yeah, they tend to generate really bloated code and are generally just inferior to a cleaner, hand-coded site made in good old-fashioned notepad.

In my opinion there are only two ways to build websites nowadays.

    1) Use a CMS system such as Wordpress

    2) Open up Notepad and code a website from scratch

Many of the website builders out there are complete rubbish and build sites that are coded very poorly and don't offer much room for customization beyond the limited options they provide you with.

Wordpress is different because of it's popularity. There are so many themes and plugins being created on a daily basis that you literally have unlimited options as to what you can do.

Also, another thing you need to worry about when creating your own website is the design and accessibility. Make sure the menus and navigations are clear and easy to use - you don't want visitors to be unable to get to where they want to.
