The idea of creating a "tribe"

You know, where like-minded individuals come together?

I was thinking of settling with either a blog or a forum, but either one is a huge piece of work --- I was thinking of opinions from you guys. How would you cultivate a community of like-minded individuals (that of course, eventually are less resistant to any sales pitch?)

Like, if I were to set up a pet penguin blog for example, it's pretty unique. Then I'd go with tips on training penguins, penguin leashes (lol), and how to swim with your penguin, penguin stunts, etc...

But the thing is ---

How I get them hooked? What makes up that hook factor? What makes you go back to a particular website? What makes you so addicted, you just have to go back onto the site daily?

  • Why do you keep coming back to this forum? If you answer that question you know how to make people coming back to your blog/forum. You do not need to create a tribe. If you offer something many people are interested in, they will come back. Sell what sells. Give them what they want. Don´t make a site nobody wants while trying to use some tricks to get them there anyway.

    Strike 1...
You seem to understand the benefit that you could derive from this, but if you think it "is a huge piece of work", then maybe this model really isn't for you. It will take a pretty hefty commitment at the outset, but gets easier over time.

As your members begin to interact between themselves more and more - your direct involvement can be reduced (notice how infrequently you see new posts here from Allen Says?)

Pretty simple... deliver on what you promised in your sales copy and/or membership sign up page. In fact, over deliver. Presumably, your primary deliverable will be information in some form (that's the most logical choice for a blog or a forum).

Many sites offer download links from these two platforms, and that's great for fulfilling your original promises, but your real goal should be to create interaction between the members.

Those interactive discussions are, in fact, value added content - that you don't have to create. You don't have to budget the time or the expense of having that content created, as your members are creating it for you. Once you reach the point where there are new threads posted every day, and quality discussions are being created, you will have a membership site with new content created for you.

You will have constant feedback from members' posts to help you decide what they need/want. You will then be able to make offers to satisfy those needs simply by posting a new thread with a promotional link for either 1) a new product you have created to fulfill that need, or 2) an affiliate product that you have located that will do the same.

The previous poster hit the nail on the head when s/he asked, "Why do you keep coming back to this forum?".

    Hope this helps,

Thanks affiliated survivor, that really helped.

But that's also the big problem --- I can't seem to figure out why I'm coming back. The community? The fact that it's a busy, active and probably the only biggest one out there in internet marketing is probably one of the reasons i guess.

The difference is that if i'm marketing out there, there are tons of marketers building different "communities" themselves. That really means that people tend to gravitate and SPLIT between the two.

WF has a huge "market-share" in the internet marketer's community - but it isn't the same in the marketing space for other places like weight loss, dating or less obscure niches.

Do you have some advice with that?

      ,
Thanks for these pointers, Sid, that really helped probe in further.

However, I've also tried experimenting before --- and it seems that people are less reluctant in engage in talk... and the only way around it is to "SEED" the community with fake users, which I do not think is a very ethical way to do things...

Do you have an idea around that?

  • You probably come back because of the content. Because of the information on the latest developments in IM etc. Making a popular blog/forum isn´t easy. Nobody will like your blog/forum just because it´s on no. 1 on Google. You need good content so that people think: If you want to know something about this or that, you have to be on this blog or forum. Good content sells itself and makes the difference between "cashiiiiing" or "Try again Sam".

Of course this is everything but easy and if you aren´t a true expert in something I would try something else. In forums usually the members write the content. Therefore you need to attract some experts as members. Every forum always has a few longtime members that know things better than the newbies and can advise them/answer their questions.
