My First Website - Now What?

Hi all I am a newbie to IM and this site, I have been lurking around this forum for a few months by way of google and finally joined. I have learned a lot from this site so far. But still have many questions.

I have a bad habit of wanting to start new things and getting too much info and never starting so I decided to actually do something this time. I am proud of myself .

I have this site that I built about a month or 2 ago basically to learn the basics hands on and I must say I have learned a lot about wordpress and IM in general but have a ways to go. I realized that I went about it all wrong as far as the first step-keyword research, it is only **************480 exact matches per month but I still followed through for the experience of it, now my question is what now. My site was on page 5 I did a few backlinks now its on page 3. I had about 7 visitors total so not much.

Thinking about turning it into blog style site without the the static front page. I know my articles are kind of short and my site overall does not look the greatest.

I am not sure what the next step is to try to get on the first page of google if that is at all possible with my site. This was just an experiment/ learning thing for me so should I just move on to a real project or keep trying at this one based on the way my site looks, content, topic, etc? I did not really plan on adding too much more to it besides maybe making it look a little better.

Any help and advice, is appreciated. My site is www(dot) microexpressiontraining (dot) net

    Hi cipha!
I'm new here but not so new to IM.
One thing I have learned in this is DO NOT count on Google for your traffic.
Yes, being on the front page for your keywords is nice, but rankings can change in an instant. If you are getting most of your traffic from Google then there may come a day when everything comes to a halt. In my experience it is best to concentrate on several avenues of traffic.

Join forums and contribute to conversations showing your expertise in the niche. Use facebook and the other SMs to build a following. You can also get free advertisement credits for Google Adsense and Microsoft advertisement from various places at times. Creating quality videos and using youtube to generate traffic can also work well. There is much more that one can do but I guess the main thing is do not put all of your eggs in one basket and keep your traffic avenues diverse.

If you still want to get to the first page of Google then here's a few things that'll boost your rankings.

    1. Social bookmarking
    2. Web 2.0 links
    3. Tier link building
    4. Article directories
    5. Blog comments
    6. Guest blogging
    7. Forums
    8. Social networks

Do follow links are best but make sure your link building efforts look natural, so maje sure you create some no follow links aswell.

At first i would suggest you to increase content. Content quality must be good. After having rich content in your site then start offline SEO like

Thanks for the helpful info, I am wondering will it be worth it to spend all that time on this site with the monthly searches being so low?

If you want to expand this site then so should the keywords you target. Don't just focus on any one keyword. If you add additional blog posts, look for other keywords that you can target, and most importantly, make sure that you write content of value.

This. Never focus on only one keyword. First of all, focusing on more than one keyword will bring you more traffic in the long term, second, you must vary your anchor text so that your link building looks natural to Google.

Would you say it is good to continue with this site even with the low monthly searches? Also are you saying it is possible to get a lot of visitors even if your site is not on the first page of google?

Start using facebook, twitter, instagram, pinterest, google plus on a daily basis. Share peoples stuff and they will share your stuff. You can build thousands of "friends" this way and when several thousands of friends are sharing your stuff, it is very powerful. Read more about how social signals are influencing SERPS nowadays.

I love how all the people above are advising you to use social media etc to get traffic. Good stuff. But.

Before you start driving traffic you need content. At the moment any traffic you get will bounce. There's little content and nothing to engage your visitor and keep them on the site.

It's excellent that you dived in and got started. It's what I always tell newbies to do. Start a site. It's the best way to learn. You've done that and you're learning. Great

Now you need to expand the content. Perhaps break it down into different topics so you can incorporate some more keywords. Next, find a nice theme so the site is more visually appealing. One of my phrases is that "people shop with their eyes". These days most of us have the attention span of a gnat - you need to grab us immediately we land on the site.

On my screen there is too much spacing between paragraphs in the articles, which should be easy to sort out.

Keep working on the site and visitors will come - follow the advice given before me, but content is. and always has been, king.

Rosetree is right.... You need more content before trying to get a meaningful amount of traffic.

You're idea about switiching to blog format is spot-on.

You're posts are a bit short, but if you adopt the blog format and accumulate a decent list of them you should be alright. Plus Google loves new content.

Only AFTER building up your content should you move on to backlink blasts and such.

Now I know what I need to work on, I am going to get on it! Another question about my affiliates in the sidebar. I attempted to make those banners myself - opinions on if they look bad, need to be changed or can be left alone?

Cipha, if you learn one thing learn that content is king. If you have great content on your website, it'll withstand changes in Google's algorithm and other things that may send weaker websites to the bottom of the Internet.

Sure, there plenty of ways to drive traffic to your site, such as, FB, Youtube, articles, etc., but once you get the viewer to your site, it should be interesting enough to keep the person there and hopefully, coming back for more.
