I challenge you to post one detailed, free traffic generation technique.

A lot of threads have been popping up lately that involve how to increase one's traffic.

It really irks me to see countless, one-word responses to these topics. They often look like this:

1. Facebook
2. Twitter
3. Digg
4. Web 2.0

Enjoy and click my signature as thanks for this awesome contribution!
Ok, maybe the last part is an exaggeration, but the rest is not. People don't bother to write out the "hows" and "whys" that go along with the sites they recommend.

In an effort to combat this, I challenge you to post one, detailed technique to generate some free traffic.

And, of course, I'll start us off.

Blog Commenting:

  1. To start, find 5-10 high traffic blogs in niches related to your site.
  2. Signup for a free RSS reader (www.google.com/reader/)
  3. Subscribe to the RSS feed of the blogs in your list.
  4. Monitor your RSS feed daily.

Eventually, you'll start to notice posting patterns. Many high traffic blogs have posts scheduled out, far in advance. Even those that don't, often publish posts along some type of schedule. People are creatures of habit, so this is a natural occurrence.

What we're looking for, is to try and figure out when new posts are being published on these blogs. You can track this using pen/paper or an excel spreadsheet.

    Once you have this information....
  5. Be one of the firsts to leave a comment on new posts. You must make high quality comments that further the discussion or add information that compliments the original post.

I find that the quality of the comment you leave directly affects the amount of traffic you'll receive. So make sure they are good.
While you may not be one of the first on each new post, just having one or two of these high quality comments each week will quickly bring you a steady stream of traffic to your site. And as an added bonus, you'll be staying on top of the latest information and news in your niche.

Can't wait to hear what you guys and girls contribute.
Looking forward to a great thread!

- Robert

Nice tip. Be the first to comment. Obviously, you're doing this for direct traffic/branding not backlinks. Good stuff

Robert, I'm going to piggy-back on your suggestion.

When scoping out the blogs you want to comment on, make note if they have trackbacks turned on. Then, if you see a post you want to respond to in more detail, put a blog post on your own blog and include the trackback link to the post you are commenting on (on the outside blog).

The best ones are the ones that say something like

"Joe Blow blogged about this post here (linked)" followed by your exceprt or a snippet of your post.

Nice tip, John. I found blog commenting did work real well when I was using it 2-3 years ago for a "bright kids" website I made. The traffic still comes in.

One that I used to use, but don't use it any longer. Perfect for getting targeted/semi targeted audience, great for list building is using classified ads.
-Find a good classifieds, that get's a decent amount of visitors(not necessarily craigslist, there are a bunch more).
-And post a couple ads a day in major cities and etc.
If you are targeting money makers online, you might want to post under the jobs section. Freebies are good for freebies section, basically find where to post. Each add doesn't bring millions of subscribers, but it is a great way to start

    Get into groups on Facebook.

A lot of people over look this. Get involved in groups to your niche. Help and give value to the groups. In 48 hours I had over 30 targeted people sign up to my list.

This is a very great idea that can really bring in targeted traffic considering the amount of people who log in to facebook everyday.

Hello from 0ne Robert to aonther Robert...

    Right...'free traffic generation technique'
In one word - YouTube - And other video sharing sites...
Don't dismiss this simple free marketing traffic generation technique.

    Here's why:

About 4 years ago I produced a product in the weight loss market.
Using camtasia and MS Office I made 50 odd videos with keywords relating to this market - I added my website link at the end of every video and also in the YouTube video description when it has finished uploading.

I have NOT done any marketing for the above mentioned product - today I still get occasional sales...all thanks to YouTube.

    TIPS:
Good content - that's the bottom line - content is king. Nothing can replace good content. If your goal is to have a video go viral...LETS FACE IT WE ALL WOULD LOVE THIS your content should hopefully accomplish the following:
Share-worthy - Your video should make viewers want to share with friends. It's best if this increases your views exponentially, meaning every 1 viewer passes it to at least 2 people.
Another great way to get a lot of views are "How-To" type videos - answering a common question with a 'brief' instructional video.
Replay Value - Your video should cause viewers to want to replay it.
Don't Forget - Call-To-Action with links to your respective website/product.

Of course its only free if you have camtasia and MS Office - however you can still implement this as I'm sure these two give a free 30 day trial...

    Good luck, Robert.

      Hi BizManRobert

      Thank you for sharing.

      I will look into video.

I not sure to to include call-to-action into my video and produce high quality video that can cause views to reply.

I have two question if you don't mind answering.

Do you outsource your video or do it yourself?

Or is the any where I can learnt this?

      Thanks again

"like" people's comments on Facebook pages related to your niche.
You can "like" 500 comments in 10 minutes.
    10 minutes a day for 30 days = 15,000 comments
Every person who's comment you "like" will be alerted and when they click on the little red tab on the top of their FB page, they will see your fanpage. As you say, we are curious people by nature. So, how many people will be curious enough to click through to have a look at your page out of 15,000?

    • Exploit human nature.

How? Everybody loves being talked about. When you profile an interesting person on your blog, they're going to share that link with all their friends.

      "Oh, no! That involves writing!"

Not too much. Interviews these days are conducted by email. Send your subject a list of questions, then when you build the article you can quote extensively from their responses.

If you're smart, your chosen subject will have a large social media following already.

      Hi retsced

I just knew about this, as it seems the easiest I like to try this first.

I hope it still can generate traffic as before or am I too late?

I will give it a shot anyway.

I don't know if this can be done actually. From what I have found out you have to hide all news individually. This would take all day ! UPDATE - If you look at this forums FB page there isn't a news feed that I can see. So I think it can be turned off.

However, I am going to use this as a way of getting opt ins to a free course. I have ordered a fiverr gig to build a fan page and will give this a go. I wil report back when I have tried it for a week.

I have just checked my notification settings on my personal FB account. It seems (by default) I get notified if someone likes my comment.

I would imagine most people don't bother changing these settings so a lot of potential customers should see that you liked their posts.

I like list building and when I started out, I used Traffic Exchanges and Safelists because they are free. The only downside to them especially when you are starting out with no money is that you have to dedicate a lot of time to earn credits for your advertising campaigns. But when signing up for them you get free signup credits. Personally I use 17 T.E.s and 53 Safelists for my free list building campaigns.
That said, here is how I used to and still do build my list with the free traffic I get from Traffic Exchanges and Safelists.
Go to All the Manual Traffic Exchanges on Traffic Exchange List This website has a list of over 250 free T.E. that you can signup with. It ranks them and also gives you other statistics such as popularity, Alexa ranking and the amount of traffic you might expect to get amongst other statistics.
Go to Safelist Directory - Your Guide to the Best Safelists on the Internet This website has a list of over 40 Safelist detailing the number of members each Safelist has, that way you are able to estimate how many people your email campaign will reach.
Once you have signed up and recieved free credits to T.E.s and safelists, create high converting splash pages and squeeze pages by embedding videos in these pages. In my experience, using 10-15 sec videos in splash and squeeze pages gets you great conversions.
T.E. and safelist marketing gave me a good start into IM since I didn't have initial capital (money) to spend on paid trafffic. Its all FREE traffic that works especially well with list building.

Using File Sharing in Viral Marketing

There is probably millions of people online right this minute looking for free downloads. This is where viral sharing begins just start giving away free PLR Ebooks, software, report or anything that has value that you own the rights to. These products should contain your branded affiliate links, website URL or even your personnel message. You will give reseller rights to the product so that they can earn some cash from something that was acquired at no cost. Your new sales team will get specific rights to resell but not to modify or alter the product and keep 100% of the profit. Once your product begins to exchange hands then the viral marketing campaign begins. These products can be uploaded and shared on sites such as 4shared, Mediafire, Filestube, and Rapid Share these are just a few but there are countless others than can used. It's just a matter of time before you'll find your products showing up in more and more places and this will start a Free Traffic Surge.

Use the Blogs section of the Warrior Forum to write articles pointing towards your site or squeeze page. If you have used long-tail keywords and an attractive title your article wil rank on page one of Google quite easily.

You can do the same thing i.e. write articles with long-tail keywords on Squidoo and Hubpages both of which are free to use and submit to.

Forum posting is something that I just got "caught about".

Forum posting needs to be very engaging and provide very good value.

Even before you think of promoting something, you need to have some sort of influence via"post, thanks".

I am also sharing some article I wrote with those that need some help.

I can't always respond as much as I can, so redirect them to an article that I talked about well clearly.

    It works

I get good traffic that is targeted and engaging.

Here are a few more free techniques to generate traffic:

    - Forum Marketing (if you are reading this and you have ever written a post in a forum mentioning your brand or company, you are already involved in it)

    - Free Classifieds Sites

    - Social Media Marketing

    - Create a free Google Business listing

    - Get listed in directories related to your niche

Always focus on engaging your readers or potential clients with fun giveaways or contests and provide some value to them, whether it is in form of content that people can learn something from or a free product review that will allow them to make a well-informed purchase decision.
Either way, if you are sincere in trying to help people, they wil reciprocate the favor and you will gain traffic to your site and potentially even leads.

The only annoying thing about this thread is...

That people are still posting one-word responses! Like:

    1. Social media marketing

    2. Linkedin

    3. Classifieds

One word does not equal a technique.

Tell us how you're using classifieds to drive traffic to an offer. Tell us what steps you are taking that is bringing you traffic from Linkedin.

    • A way of carrying out a particular task, esp. the execution or performance of an artistic work or a scientific procedure.

Surprised no one has mentioned stumbleupon yet. It's so awesome cause it's so easy. I don't really need to elaborate. Just submit your blog posts to SU.

Word of advice on this: Some say you get alot more stumblers to your website if you yourself are active and stumble to other sites. The more active(liking, disliking, reporting, commenting, having a bio), the more traffic you get. This is just a theory. Not proven.

And also have the stumbleupon icon on you site, because SU said this will help(can't remember why, but if stumbleupon itself said it, it's true.)

I've seen website pages were the traffic from su tops 5 million. Nice.

    I'll post another one:

    Social Bookmarking (BizSugar):

This was originally posted by Kim Roach in her thread:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-com-dead.html

Out of her list, I decided to give BizSugar a try and used the following steps:

    1. Did a little research around their site to see what the community was about and what articles were getting the most exposure and "Sugars" (likes/upvotes). This also involved reading all their rules and terms.
    2. Registered and created a complete profile
This involves filling out your profile information (website url, facebook page, etc)

I also made 100% sure to upload an image. It seems the community on this site favors those who attempt to put in more effort. My brief research showed that contributors who took their posting and profile more seriously were getting better results than those who were not.
    3. Submitted one of my articles that was already posted (and indexed) from my original site. The article I used was: 5 Tips You Can Use Today to Increase Your Work-From-Home Productivity | Prosperity Clicks

I ensured that I also wrote a custom excerpt for the BizSugar community to try and peak their interest a little more than a standard excerpt.
Upon approval, I noticed that after 1-2 days, my article was put into their homepage feed as a "hot topic" and that people were upvoting and also tweeting my article!

The 1st day resulted in about 10-15 unique visitors. Upon getting on the "Hot Sheet," I notice an increase to around 20-30/day unique visitors.

I'm not sure what these types of sites are called (social bookmarking?), but I very much enjoy the posting format as the users have to click through to my site in order to read the article.

    Hope this helps.

It really irks me to see countless, one-word responses to these topics. They often look like this:

Good tip - do you just guess the traffic a site gets, or is there a free way to find out?

      • Alexa traffic rank
      • number of twitters/facebook fans (this obviously can be inaccurate due to people buying likes and follows)
      • Referrals from other people (Any site people are talking about in other communities has traffic)
      • Number of comments per post (again, can be faked but doesn't seem to happen as often as likes/follows)
Once you get into a specific niche, it's not hard to figure out who the bigger players are. And, if all else fails, just ask people.

I heard you can get good traffic from doc sharing sites like Docstoc and ScribD, I never really believed it but it's true.

In case people don't know what it is, well it's like an article directory but first you need to translate your txt article into pdf format, there are free tools for that just Google and you'll find.

Best post that I've seen. Brilliant idea. This post has been needed for so long. At times I have asked posters to add some detail but very rarely had a response.
This is called The Curse Of Knowledge:-
The Curse of Knowledge. Lots of research in economics and psychology shows that when we know something, it becomes hard for us to imagine not knowing it. As a result, we become lousy communicators. Think of a lawyer who can’t give you a straight, comprehensible answer to a legal question. His vast knowledge and experience renders him unable to fathom how little you know.

Such a powerful method very few people are utilizing. (popular in the IM space)

    The possibilites are endless!

Instead of buying solo ads for 300$ you could hire a writer on elance, pay 25$ for a high quality article.
order 15 of them and start contacting blogs. Now you have 15 times the exposure than from a solo ad!

I find StumbleUpon awesome for free traffic ! Submit each of your blog posts and watch the traffic comming in. But your content must be interesting to read, if you want it to be shared and became viral.
I discovered it with Onlywire, which is not free (still cheap and a free trial) and submit your blog post to 40 social media like FB,twitter etc.
All my posts got at least 50+ shares from stumbleupon and then a lot of traffic for each post. Didn't need any SEO, all this social media presence ranks your site itself (lot of page 1)

Twitter has been working for me recently. Following people and peoples followers in your niche, then tweeting good content with the occasional link to a page/blog can work well.

I notice quite a few people mentioned facebook, and it's a really great idea to like peoples comments but all the marketing pages and groups I've joined are littered with pages and pages of spam and links, is this normal or am I joining the wrong ones?

You've been listening to the panic generators, I guess.

The truth is we just don't know what the next Penguin update will do. We know what it's already done: Made a lot of people fearful that their SEO "business" will go down the tubes.

Here is a little LinkedIn trick I have thought about, but not yet implemented. It would probably work best if you have a personal branding website.

    1. Put you website as your job or in your main description (Owner of www.websitename.com or Author of Book Title) as well as adding the link to your profile.

    2. Make sure your image and profile show up when you visit a persons page. Also make sure it does not say "Someone from the .. industry".

    3. Search for your main keyword/industry and visit as many professional profiles you can.

I have tested this a few times (But not with my website listed). If I visit a persons profile on linkedin, before the day is over they have looked at my profile. People on LinkedIn dream about being headhunted and are sure interested when a new person has looked at their CV.

This will probably not work if you visit Seth Godin or Gary Vaynerchuck but the regular Joe would look into it.

If you are into local or offline marketing you might look for business owners or inhouse marketers and visit their profiles. An other idea is to just search for random people in your local area.

A new traffic method I have been using is syndicating mini classified ads linking to a lead capture page through Facebook Groups.

I also add an image to that lead capture page to make the thumbnail display on the FB post.

I automate the process using Hootsuite and schedule it to post in batches of 30 groups at a time throughout the day, several times a day.

And then that is a constant bit of exposure of the ad and it gets a few a day. Can probably be a bit more aggressive with it to scale it for more exposure and leads but starting off slowly for now.

Not necessarily one of my main free methods but something I thought was cool to get some regular leads from with a method that at first I didn't think would get any leads because at first these FB Groups seem overwhelmed with ads, but they do seem to get clicked!

Most of these methods do work to get traffic and it is all about testing and tweak and being consistent and scaling it to make it work well for your campaigns.

Search Yahoo Answers for your main keyword in your niche (in advanced settings, select 'open questions'). Give good detailed answers to any questions relevant to your niche, and include a link to your site in the 'Sources' box.

Remember to also search for related keywords - so for example, as well as 'acne', search for 'pimples', 'clear skin', 'blackheads', etc. By widening this out, you'll find a lot more questions - and so get a lot more traffic.

The traffic you get from this is very tightly targeted - the person asking the question, others searching Yahoo Answers for the same solution, and after a while people searching Google for the same thing (as Yahoo Answers ranks very well in Google search).

By just answering a few questions a day, there is a strong cumulative effect - I have sites that get thousands of visitors from this one source alone.

Guest blogging and commenting on niche blogs? The one important detail that is missing is how to qualify the millions of blogs on Google as worth bothering with. How do you sort out which ones are still live, are popular and have more than 6 members? What search terms will show these details? Or ??????. I wasted so much time sorting through absolute rubbish using the search terms given here. LOL

I posted the above question but had no replies. Is there no way to sort good sites/ blogs from the waste of time ones? This thread shows such great promise. Please don't let it drift into the usual cryptic-crossword answers.
If we PC newbies were PC and IM experts as good as you guys we wouldn't be asking questions, would we? 20 words of extra facts or details could make a rubbish post into a Bookmarker. Stop me if I'm wrong, but isn't the forum of the top communicators? The Opening Post really resonated with me. Let's keep it going. Your buddy on the Path to Fame and Fortune,

I answered this in an earlier post.

You can and should know who the bigger blogs are in your niche from word of mouth. For everything else, cross check it with Alexa the Web Information Company

Obviously if you come across a blog that shows its last post as "Added by admin on Sep 2, 2003" then it's pretty obvious that blog is not current and/or monitored by the owner anymore.

Blogs that show 0 comments on posts is usually a warning sign that the blog has no traffic.

    Hello fellow warriors,

Do you use PRLog? If not, you should. PRlog is the best 'free' press release site online. I've been using it for over 2 years now and it is an excellent and free way to get people to your website.

    Here's how I do it...

First, you have to target keywords that you want to rank for. I suggest 'low tail' keywords since PRlog is now finally being picked up and ranked by Google.

I posted a release targeting the keywords 'easy piano improvsation.' It's now in the top 5 in Google. How long did it take? About a week.

Now, here's the beauty part ... PRlog allows you to include pictures, videos, keywords, and more - all for free!

Find a HOT topic ebook such as traffic or make money, then create a small squeeze looking page, instead of having them opt-in, use a service called "pay with a tweet" this way they have to Retweet on twitter to get the product, have your retweet point back to your squeeze page

This is not a free technique but it has worked out for me so far.
Hire an SEO company on elance.com that will build links to your website and submit your website to PR sites.
I paid less than 100$ for this service and most of my traffic (50/day) comes from the targetted keywords.

Anyways, i would start off submitting ebooks. Scribd Is the most visited ebook website with atleast 4M views a MONTH. Now, i would get a free plr product, or a really cheap one within my niche, i would make it unique by changing the cover page you can easily outsource that, but i do it myself, i also add my name and photo to the ebook to add a little uniqueness. Anyways now that is all finished, i would cut the ebook in half and add my squeeze page at the end of the first half of the ebook and say "Visit this site to continue reading" Then they usually opt-in and i get subscribers .

Great way of building a list, and great way for generating great traffic.

Don't forget to like this post if you found it useful

This has made our businesses and niche biz thousands of dollars.

Realize there is no better way to make money than EMAIL marketing. Yes still, email marketing is a great way.

    1) Find those in your niche with bigger email lists. This is very targeted.

    2) Ask to do a Joint venture with them, and spilt the profits 50% - 50%

    3) Some will say no. Some will say yes!

Depending on the size of the list you can make a few hundred to literally thousands of dollars.

This is FREE targeted traffic, and just takes a few minutes of you time to get the ball rolling but an awesome way to make money.

LEVERAGE BABY!, use it. Very very very very very powerful.

Huffington news is certainly a huge traffic source.
One article on the Kate middleton photos got over three THOUSAND
comments. So I posted a link to where they could find the photographs, (naughty me) the link would popup my CPA offer
when they left. According to the stats 150 people clicked on the offer.
However only one submitted their info netting me a sum of
$1.50 It was the free iphone offer. Have to get more targeted next
      I guess.

Haha pretty smart move, but would've been nicer if it made you more money ;P

Yeah, the secret would be to target better, the thousands of people
responding to the iphone 5 launch would have been better, but I
did not have my offer set up in time.

Oooh, great post! I'm definitely going to try some of these.

On another note, here's how I like to use LinkedIn:

    1. Join LinkedIn Groups that are connected to your industry
    2. Participate in those groups (you don't have to go all out, but try to be somewhat active)
    3. Write great blog post
    4. Post your blog post to each group with an attention grabbing headline.

I've gotten a good portion of my traffic off of this and have really started building a nice readership (and my list) this way.

This may or may not be free, depending on the specific site you partner with, but it brings in SALES, BUYING TRAFFIC, and most of the sites I work with don't charge upfront fees.

    The traffic source?

    Coupon sites

I offer quality ebooks at a huge discount (like, $5 or whatever).

It brings in a decent amount of traffic, and more importantly, buyers!

And because I have a solid back end in place, I often end up getting higher sales later on down the road.
