Seriously - Google is becoming too big for it's boots, but that's purely a remark from someone on the outside looking in. As a content syndicator, I haven't cared about, or relied upon Google for years.

Of course, my content does create a certain amount of SEO traffic, but it's traffic I can pretty much do without because it's low converting and of little benefit to me.

Actually, the more Google messes around with the status quo, the better, because they just don't affect me, while on the other hand, come September there will no doubt be another huge outcry from marketers suffering from their new tactics to rule everything.

      I agree.

I really have no sympathy for anyone who continues to get slammed by Google. People (maybe the correct term is "a tiny handful") on here post time and time again about moving away from Google and solidifying more long-term solutions.

99% of this advice gets completely ignored. I've decided to not even bother anymore.

After this and the future changes they have coming down the pipes, I won't be hopping into any threads titled, "Google just bankrupted me overnight!" and saying, "Told ya so," but I'll sure be thinking it.

I'm with Annie. I have been following Rule #1 for as long as I remember.

Maybe I lose some traffic because of it, but I'm never caught off guard by algorithm changes either.

My online business is intended to help all of my customers, not to appease Google.

    All the best,
    Michael

    Well said Craig.

Any online business that relies completely on Google for traffic (SEO or PPC) is one algo tweak or ad account review away from destruction.

Not a healthy way to live.

I've spent a lot of time pondering which direction I want to focus on over the next year. Last year I did a lot of writing but I also focused on SEO. Now that Google is changing the rules almost monthly I'm working on building my list more than ever and using paid traffic for lead generation.

You just can't rely on Google.

If you do not rely on Google , can you let me know what methods you are using to
get traffic and what results you are getting ? Thanks.

      My top 2 methods are:

      1. (by a long way) Forum Marketing: target the biggest forums in your niche, share your knowledge, build a list and/or promote offers in your signature link and even run ads on such forums (e.g. WF of course).

      2. Identify the biggest bloggers in your niche, subscribe to their various RSS feeds in an RSS Reader (I use My Yahoo) and check a few times a day for brand new posts on those blogs. When you see a new post there, make a great comment and put the link in your name (DON'T keyword stuff your name! Use your real name).

Your goal is to be the first or one of the first commenters there. The link will be nofollow but you will get some traffic (do it habitually for the best cumulative effect) and the blogger will also be more receptive to your future guest posting there.

Seems like a job not a business. What happens if you stop doing this on a daily basis?
And yes a business should not rely on Google or any other business as well, be it forum or the biggest blogger.

Yeah Google seems to be getting much like Apple in its ways...

Trying to control supply, demand, suppliers, customers, and everything inbetween because the world revolves around them!

Remember though that Google is designed for its users, not for the people who use it for marketing purposes!

Content is king and as far as I'm concerned it always will be. Google may be the dominant search engine right now but if it ever goes belly up, all of the sites that are structured around great content will still be around.

Google makes changes to a tool intended for people buying display ads, and a side effect is that the same tool is less useful to the freebie hunters who will never buy an ad on that network? Bad Google, bad...

Seriously, this is just more wailing over nothing.

As much as I don't like relying on Google, it's too huge source of income and traffic to pass up. I would rather work hard pleasing Google and create a very large income stream, even if that income stream lasts a year or two. Though I'm saying this and I've yet to be impacted negatively with the Google updates, so I'm still a happy Google camper.

I agree, you shouldn't COMPLETELY rely on Google, but it can be very useful if you can implement SEO effectively.

You gota love Google! and well said you can't rely 100% of your business on google traffic.

Or if you are at the beginning make sure you are building a list so if something does happen atleast you have an asset.

You can also use Google against itself and use their web properties to push traffic to your money site.

For instance I've been doing a lot of Youtube marketing with great success and great way to fly under the radar with updates.

I am another marketer that has stopped using Google and I can see them losing a lot of their customers if they continue on this crusade. For me, you cannot rely on this platform to make money. Some will definitely disagree with this but how can you build a house on quicksand?

They hate internet marketing and affiliates, and because that is my main business I just don't bother with them any more. There is plenty of traffic out there if you know where to look. Its their loss I'm afraid, as they have alienated me and many other marketers. I would rather my money went to a company that wants to work with me than work against me.

Haha. They love Internet Marketers. Not.

I would argue that they would not be as big as they are had it not been for Affiliates and Marketers, so to alienate us now just seems a bit stupid to me. How much money have we spent there? How many sites have we built? How much revenue have we generated for them?

Google is something not to deal with all of the time.

There many other strategies to use for traffic.

I am trying to limit my strategies with Google, but do try to rank for "lower" competition keywords.

This is definitely true. Google has a lot of traffic but there are other sources as well. Have to diversify in order to survive the longer term.

Avoiding Google right now is smart - personally I think they're kinda confused.

Are they an ad platform? Are they a social media hub? Are they a search provider?

They've become obsessed with being a multi-headed beast...but you never really know what they're going to do next.

Even if you play by every single one of their rules...it garuntees you nothing -- I know personally!

Relying on G for your primary traffic is a dangerous game right now.
