Coming Up With A Brand Name - How Do You Do It?

Hi Warriors,

I find this to be one of the most difficult aspects of working online, it can be very frustrating at times.

Sadly I'm stuck on this problem once again, how do you Warriors come up with a brand name?

You know I had the same problem, whenever I am looking at getting a new domain name or starting a new company I go by 3 rules:

      1. Shorter is always better - if you pick a short name or domain name it is always easier to remember for customers, remember they are the ones you want to please!
      2. Try and Rhyme - I know it sounds super lame, but think about many song lyrics people remember, they remember them because they rhyme!
      3. Pick a good keyword - look at sites related to what you want to do, and do a keyword tool research bid on them, then use the keywords to put them into your brand name for good search engine visibility plus it gives people an easy way to identify what you do!

I actually did number 3 without thinking when I started my first brand and it worked out really well!

      Hope that helped!

I am agree with you. Short Domain name is always nice and good for you customer and visitor. So, Everyone should choose short Name for his/her Domain.
And choose a right keyword for every domain as well as every page of any Web site.

        Thanks all.

I think it's important to note that the company makes the name, not the other way around.

My personal set of rules are:

    1. Cannot be complicated to spell
    2. No more than 2 words maximum (preferably one word)
    3. No slang
    4. No abbreviations

I often try to think in terms of music groups, software companies, etc. They tend to come up with catchy names that link two things together that make little sense.

    Maroon 5
    Mindscape
    Squaresoft

    You get the idea.

    Hi Melissa,

    1. Ask a few sharp minds / friends to join your Think Tank.
    2. Email each an explanation of your business and your goal.
    3. Ask each person to suggest 5 names and a tagline for your company.
    4. Turn it into a contest and offer the top three winners a nice / simple prize.
    5. If you have some REALLY creative minds in your camp, you may ask
them to suggest a logo design, possible icon / mascot , etc.
    5. Start building a brand around the TOP name, logo, etc., you select.

You'll have NO problem coming up with GREAT
    names to choose from.

    Much success, always,
    Frank Wellington

Well for my business brand , I went through a process of thinking of words that projected the image I wanted for my business...one that I thought would attract customers. Once I came up with one that I liked, I immediately checked to see if it was available as a website.Remember the most important thing is not the NAME but BRAND!!.Many marketers will suggest you to find a name that is easy to remember ,is google-fiverr ..etc easy to remember ??
Brand is the result of branding which is result of killer Marketing which cost money .
Brand agencies charge dearly for a list of suggestions for brand identities, but it’s simple to do it yourself, brainstorm, whittle the list down to a handful of finalists, and test on colleagues, friends, and family..etc .

by the way ,a newbie method to come up with a brand name:
Go to NameStation.com and domaingroovy.com try there different combinations and choose the ones you think it sounds good .

Think of several adjectives/adverbs that describe what you want to be known for by your customers/visitors.

Take what you come up with and break each one into partial syllables and related syllables.

For example, if you had a photo hosting site, you might want to be known for speedy uploads, so: speedy, rapid, quick, fast, zippy

Break them up a little: spee, spe, ra, qui, fas, zi,

Now add some endings. These could be short, two-letter endings or the words, and partial words, related to words like "photo" and "host".

So: pho (or photo), pic, pix, ima (image) hos (or host), mo, do, ido, avo, co, ro, ty, y, etc....

Put some together that seems right and add anything on the fly that also comes to you (just giving an example for "pho"):
speepho, spopho, phomo, quipho, quickpho, phoido, phoavo, rapidpho, phofas, faspho,

Notice hos/host really doesn't fit in because that could just mean "hosting" instead of "photo" related hosting.

This is if you want a "brandable" domain name. If you want a "breneric" (mix of brandable and generic) then you would go with one word that would be a dictionary word, or a recognized short version or nickname of the word: photo, picture, pic, image, pix ---and then pair up that word with a suffix or prefix that is not a typical word by itself...so: picmo, photomo, faspix, fasimage, zippho....

You can brainstorm some good possibilities this way and it will trigger some other ideas in your mind until you suddenly have one of those lightning strikes hit you, and boom...you have your domain.

Have all the relevant keyword in your niche, blog description, domain name. That's how you build a brand name.

Hmmm well the method you use may depend on how serious or fun you want or need your new brand name to be...

If it is about a particular niche you could write a list of all the words you like that reflect your product. You could also throw in some positive words that go well with theose words too.

Rip up the list so the words are individual, put the product reflective words in one hat and the positive ones in another. Next mix them up and start pulling them out and jotting them down.

This way you may get somereally interesting and unique combinations that work but wouldn't have necessarily though out on your own. Plus it is fun

Assuming your brand isn't keyword targeted, then you need to write down your ideas in a notepad, reflect on which ones seem best, and check to see if the domain name is available.

This is the exact process I used to buy my domain PowerMotivator.com

You can do the same. Be patient, and try using certain words in your brand name that sound powerful, extravagant, yet related to what you're all about.

Get creative with it, and make sure it makes sense with your company name and website domain name.

For example, this guy named Joe Polish has a company named "Pirannah Marketing". The slogan is "Eat your competition alive". Makes sense to me.

Choosing a brand name is definitely a task to reckon with. First of all, it is difficult to choose whether you must use a descriptive name which is somewhat boring to some extent or should you introduce a self-coined made up word to establish your brand.

The best brand names are those that are easy to remember, state the what your product/service does in it's name, and for some reason, weird sounding names. For example, google, wikipedia, yahoo, facebook, kinkos etc

There is nothing much to think about a Brand name. It can be anything resembling your product or it can be a combination of some catchy words. Just make sure that name is never used by anyone else. Your brand name will become a real brand when you will "MARKET" it. Otherwise, it does not matter how good your name is it will never work for you.

Be confident and give yourself 10 Good names to choose one from them. It will work.

Personally I try to go for words that invoke pathos - emotional reader response. Yahoo did this well. Something that rolls off the tongue, rhymes or uses alliteration is perfect.

Just make sure is not trademarked of course. Even remotely similar names can upset some overzealous lawyers/ make them see dollar signs.
