John Locke openly admitted that he paid for a lot of reviews.

      Could Kindle ban him?

According to the article he receives the books, "reads" them, and then does the review. A lot could be said about the quality of the reviews and "if" the review was influenced by getting paid, but it seems a shade above fiverr sellers offering a "review" for $5 without asking for the product.

What's the legal division between a positive review and a testimonial? Paying for fake testimonials is illegal. Why is it not the same for commissioning 5-star reviews

As an avid book reader I never really trust reviews like this. It's great he made this much money though. I could do it and give true honest reviews (even though some people wouldn't like the review I give)

I do not recall seeing a legal discussion about this, and I haven't researched the issue, but my opinion is a "review" is more open ended, can be positive or negative, and could be about most anything.

For instance, you could review a book's cover, feel, appearance, paper quality, etc., without getting to the content.

A testimonial "in my book" is positive and more narrowly directed to the character of the author or an outcome obtained by using a product or suggested course of action.

For instance, using the techniques in the book I lost 15 pounds over 4 months.

They could be combined: This is really a difficult book to read as the print is small and I was constantly reaching for the dictionary, but once I figured it out using the techniques I lost 15 pounds over 4 months.

There are also many instances where the words could be interchangeable.

After his business grew some, he hired others for the "book reviews". He was paid for 5 star reviews in most cases. Only a few customers said it didn't matter whether it was positive or negative. Most wanted 5 Star Reviews. The people from Craigslist that he hired were told that they could do a positive review for $30 or if they couldn't do a 5 Star Review, they would be paid half price. I wonder which they chose? lol

I seriously doubt that the FTC will bother going after authors or people who review books, but this is no different than paid testimonials, and no disclosure was made that there was a financial incentive when he gave those 5 Star Reviews.

I personally don't give much of a hoot. I don't read or trust online reviews anyway. His business was short lived, so anyone thinking about picking up where he left off, don't count on a long term income.

The story hits a little close to home on a few fronts. For one, one of the folks mentioned in the story is/was a Warrior Forum member.

Paying for positive feedback !! we live in a world of false advertising and it's been that way for a very long time.writing glowing "reviews" for money is a very lucrative business.

Hi everyone. Just thought I'd chime in since I was mentioned. Not sure how much I have to add to the conversation, but obviously I came to the conclusion that paid reviews are basically a bunch of bull shit. I had much better experiences networking with independent book bloggers who were friendly and willing to offer their honest opinions for free. I would recommend that over a paid service any day.
