Wordpress.com compared to wordpress.org... EXTREMELY CONFUSED

Hello friends,

So I keep hearing all this fuss about plugins and whatnot (New to IM). i'm currently using wordpress.com to run my blog and wanted to try these plugins myself.. Come to find out, wordpress.com doesn't support plugins, only wordpress.org does..

But the thing is, I've seen a "Plugins" tab on peoples dashboards using wordpress.com on youtube vids for wordpress tutorials...

I want plugins but not the complexity wordpress.ORG has... It looks real IM savvy, something I'm not that familiar with yet.. You are responsible for a lot more things on wordpress.org like having to manually get rid of ads and backing up your content... stuff, frankly, that I have no idea how to do.

Are plugins essential for maximum potential in the IM world? Does wordpress.COM offer a substitute for plugins that are similar?

I REALLY want to be able to use all the different variety of plugins but I just can't commit to the know-hows of wordpress.org..

Cliff notes:
-Want plugins
-Only have wordpress.COM
-What can I do to get plugins without dealing with the technical mumbo jumbo of wordpress.ORG?

Thanks in advance,

alien

A lot of people get confused as to the difference between wordpress.com an wordpress.org

Simply put, wordpress.com is a platform for people to create a controlled (ie: doesn't have the full flexibility of your own WordPress installation) WordPress blog.

It is hosted by wordpress.com and owned by them and they can delete it if it contravenes any of their terms of service.

Wordpress.org is simply the site that makes the WordPress software available for download to install on your own site.

If you have your typical web hosting account, you don't need to know anything about wordpress.org as you can easily install it via Fantasico, Quick Install or similar options on your cpanel.

      UMS,

      thank you for quick response.

I'm still confused about the plug-ins... Would I need to transfer all my content to wordpress.org to use them?

      best,

If you have your own hosting, then you would go to wordpress.org to download the software to upload to your 'own' server. Then you can use whatever plugins you wish.

note; A lot of hosting providers offer one click installations for wordpress

If you have a wordpress.com blog you can do a $15 dollar upgrade that will basically redirect all your posts to a installation of wordpress.org. Then you just export all data from wordpress.com to a installation of wordpress.org

Wordpress.org - CMS Hosted on your server
Wordpress.com - CMS hosted on wordpress server

You will have full control your CMS if you download and installed the CMS on wordpress.org

It's simple and this is all you need to know.

    Wordpress.com = DON'T use.

    Wordpress.org = DO use.

    I'm not kidding either.

The reason why Will says don't use Wordpress.com is that they don't allow commercial sites. If they spot that you are trying to sell something your site will be deleted.

Now that you have gained a little experience it's time to dive in and buy your own domain and hosting. Then you can install the Wordpress software on your own site and you can use all the plug-ins that you want.

I've never used Wordpress.com, but can you export the database of content? (If you can, you'll find it under tools/export in the dashboard.) Then you can set up your own site and import the data.

    Good luck

You are over complicating things, it is really easy to install plugins on wordpress sites (wordpress.org that is) it is a matter of upload, activate and you are good to go.

Buy a site, get cheap hosting, install wordpress and install a free plugin. You will be surprised a how easy it is.

As others have said wordpress.com is for hobby sites who just want to have a homepage to share things that are not commercial.

Invest in a .com domain from namecheap, get a hostgator account, and install the wordpress software onto the site. All the information on how to do this is available via YouTube or hire someone at fiverr.

If you get confused speak with the support desk at namecheap / hostgator they are used to dealing with newbies.

Once you get more keen on blogging start building up a network of sites and build relationships with the bloggers so you can get to understand the technical stuff. Some will do it themselves, whilst others will have an outsource person they can recommend. Personal contacts are better than dipping your toe in the world of outsourcing.

Just remember that a blog is a big commitment and you will have to keep it updated to become a success.

Wordpress.com is just where they host wordpress for you, but it's extremely limited. Just get a web host and a domain name and host your own wordpress - you'll save money over paying on Wordpress.com, and it's much more customization.

Plus, you'll be able to host multiple wordpress sites per hosting account.
