A video on the landing page might help. People leave sites they are not immediately interested in.

    - avoid using tons third party content that make you site load slower
    - make sure your site navigation clear and easily accessible
    - include search box functionality
    - don't put too many ads and consider about ad placement
    - pop-up ads in your content, interruptions to speak with live chat and pop up sign-up newsletters can make your site reader away from your site in seconds.
    - your site must looks good on all major browser

Try to check the keywords from which you are generating most traffic, the landing page and try to analyze whether the information that users are searching are you able to receive. Check the call per action aspect, site loading time etc.
So, analyze and think from user point of view you will get your answer.

#1 reason people leave a site in a hurry - lack of quality content

A high bounce rate is not necessarily a bad thing. If someone searches for what they want, finds that out straight away when entering your page, they'll leave. This would result in a high bounce rate but make your site very relevant and useful.

If your trying to profit out of this site I would focus on conversions rather than bounces. Many sites with low bounce rates are unprofitable and vice versa.

All the above are fine. Engaging content is key - but bounce rate is measured by those who come to the first page and then exit on the first page without going to another page on the site (if you are using GA for analytics).

So you need to get them clicking through and engaging them on the next set of pages that get them to take action. So if your conversions or opt-ins are doing great and its off the first page of your site you then you are already winning & bounce rate is a moot point. If they are NOT taking the action you want them to take then understand why they aren't and fix it.

I use Visual Website Optimizer (no afil) that is free the first 30 days to get clickmap/heatmap & split testing done so I can get some useful feedback to make the correct decisions based on the CTA's (calls to action) that I am looking for folks to execute on.

It all depends on what your site offers (what it is)... If it is a single sales landing page (with not many other pages..) then disregard the bounce rate.

If you have a blog for example with multiple posts on many pages... You need to entice users to click on an article using better headlines.

There are lies, damn lies and statistics. The bounce rate statistic can mean little if you take it out of context.

For example, I have a 60 page site that where most pages have bounce rate between 10 and 30% and yet the page that makes the most money has a bounce rate of 96%; but, and this is important, the average time on that page is 6 minutes plus.

The reason being it is full of short comparison reviews for a particular range of products.
People read the blurb, choose what product they want and then click to buy, and off they go to buy, hence the high bounce rate.
This page hovers between positions 3-5 in Google, and Panda made zero difference.

So in addition to your bounce rates, look at the time visitors spend on pages, if your content is poor they will be off in less than 20 seconds.

Therefore add engaging content, images, videos, maps, diagrams, charts, cartoons, jokes.. Anything that will hold your visitors attention for longer, don't forget lots of links to your other content either.

    Hope it helps...

    • Remove any page elements that are not necessary, including pop-ups and flashy banners. Add relevant pictures, videos and infographics to your articles. Write quality content that adds value to your readers. Try to increase the accessibility of your website. Add a sitemap and search functionality to help users find the information they're looking for.

I agree, also find exactly what they are looking for and give it to them.

The bounce rate % within Google analytics isn't a very reliable metric. As mentioned by others, if someone visits your page, they could spend several minutes reading or watching a video and then exit. From my experience, based solely on the fact they didn't click to another page, Google considers this a bounce. A better metric to look at is time spent on the page.

    Good luck with your endeavors.

as some others have said a high bounce rate is not always a bad thing but what i do on my niche sites to lower my bounce rate and it works very well is include a video on the home page above the fold or add videos in the sidebar

adding videos engages your visitors a lot more resulting in your bounce rate dropping

even adding videos in your sidebar helps a fair bit too
