Banned from a forum for advertising

I have posted a few times over the last couple of days as a newbie looking for advice, and received some valuable information which I have been implementing.

I have joined a few pregnancy forums (my chosen niche), but their rules state that no advertising is allowed. On one forum, I did put the same link in my signature as the one below.........and I have been banned! I understand that I obviously broke forum rules and was trying to be a little cheeky, but how am I meant to promote on forums without being able to advertise? Finding it all really hard to get going on it at the moment - no matter how hard I try, I don't get far!

Please help! Any ways to over come this?

Surely that forum is not the only pregnancy one out there. Find other forums related to your niche and read forum rules before signing up.

When finding forums I usually check a few posts and If I don't see anyone using a signature link, I just find another one.

There's advertising, and then there's advertising.

Many, many forums forbid advertising, but their size and activity level make them appear desirable. Only time will tell if the appearance matches the reality.

In these instances, the next step is see what kind of link you can put in your profile, and what kind of user name or avatar you can use.

Do you have to be "John Doe" or can you be "JohnD from KnockedUpNowWhat.com"? Can you use a logo with your url as an avatar? Can you use a picture of yourself wearing the url as an avatar?

    That's step one.

Step two takes some finesse. Contribute to the forum. When it's appropriate, mention that you've written a blog post or a report you give your visitors or...you get the idea. Don't do it in every post, and don't search the forum for any thread that might be close and drop a bunch of those. Even if you manage to avoid the ban, people will learn to ignore you if you drop references into 20-30 threads every day.

Do it right, and you build authority and reputation. When people see that you offer something, they'll hunt you down to get it.

Warning: this can turn into a serious time-suck if you let it. If you're in that forum purely to peddle your stuff, this isn't for you. There are more efficient ways of doing things. But if you're going to be in that forum anyway, you might be surprised at how many visitors you can lure to your site. And because they've had to put some effort into getting there, they'll likely be more targeted and more committed when they get there...

This exactly. If you're already on there, being a part of the community, then that's fine. But if you're going around trolling (yes, what you're doing is trolling), then you should be perma-banned (IP ban). Don't act surprised that what you did got you banned.

As a forum moderator, contributor, and writer for a few major auto forums, nothing irritates us more than whenever someone comes in with a low post count (under 1000) and starts spamming. Ridiculous...I think that all forums should tighten up their advert policies, and WFers should stop suggesting that people go and spam on forums. Saying that "get on forums and advertise there" is ridiculous. Be a part of the community. If you still want to sell your site, do so this way:

      1) Start a thread
      2) First post...just enough to entice said reader to click on the link to your article
      3) Engage in conversation
      4) ???
      5) Profit!

But don't do this without being a part of the community.

Excellent points, however if a forum prohibits advertising, then most likely something like "John from MySite.com" is going to be banned. Building up a reputation is a great method except it's probably not worth it (unless you are on a VERY large forum) as it'll take you loads of posts.

I would say either find an alternative way, one not so obvious of advertising to advertise on that forum or look for other ones, there are definitely a bunch of them out there.

You ask if there are any ways to overcome this. Overcome what? You make it sound like sticking to the rules is somehow outside your control, like maybe demons are forcing you to advertise where it's not allowed. If that's the case then exorcism might be what you need.

But if you're actually in control, it's simple. Don't mess around. Play nice. Read the rules and if you're tempted to break them get up and run around the block a couple of times. That's how I overcame the obsessive urge to be cheeky... Good luck.

Thank you for the posts, much appreciated!

Yes, plenty more forums, so will keep looking, but many do say the same thing in their rules.

The one I got banned from does allow signatures, so I thought that maybe it wouldn't get noticed! But I will be more vigilant from now on!! It IS extremely time consuming though, and many of the forums don't have the ability for you to follow up on your own posts (like on this one you can obviously see which posts you have made - helpful for following the thread).

Slowly getting there with Facebook - guess I expected things to happen a bit quicker than this I guess!

You also have to be careful referring to your sig in your posts here. Saying "My sig" in a post could lead to losing your sig.

Not by advertising in forums that don't allow it, that's for sure, lol.

The forum marketing game has without a doubt gotten harder, and it's not going to get any easier. A lot of forums seem to be more tolerant when it comes to linking to a Facebook page, so maybe give that a try. Then you can funnel people from your Facebook page to your website. Not ideal, but it's an option. Ultimately, you may have to break down and pay to advertise on some of these sites.

You think that's bad, try doing it in some women's weight loss forums. Those moderators will toss you in a second if they even get a whiff of a commercial site. I was told that directly even though I just had a weight loss blog with a single Adsense block on it. As was pointed out earlier, just put your site in your profile. If you add value, people will seek you out. And yes, this approach IS a big time drain, I've done it, but only in forums that I wanted to be in anyway.

Forums have rules against advertising for a reason - they want real contributors, not advertisers.

If your only reason for joining a forum is to advertise then you should be banned. You won't contribute anything worthwhile, so why have you around.

Posting to a "no-ads" forum doesn't seem like a total waste of time to me - especially if that forum has lots of members who may frequent other forums in that niche - then are you not building authority with people in your niche? You can then market to the same people in other forums that do allow ads/sig links.

There will be loads of forums that will allow signatures, check out other peoples posts on the forums before registering then you will see whats allowed. You can't complain because you broke their rules?

Another way, get a VPN (HideMyAss is good) Then go to Yahoo answers and open say three accounts under 3 IP addresses, log all your details and create 3 profiles with different female names, avatars etc and start answering peoples questions about anything and everything. Make sure they are useful and informative. You get 2 pts for an answer, 10pts if its the best answer.

When you hit 250 points, you become a level 2 member and you can post links in your answers box. So you go on there daily and post answers that are useful, and sprinkled amongst those are links to your money sites, affiliate links (cloaked) and anywhere else you want to send traffic. I have over 10 accounts atm, I get 1000s of clicks this way and its targeted. Answer questions on pregnancy etc and watch the traffic come in.

    Thank you for the advice.

The forums that I am going on (pregnancy related) ARE of interest to me outside of advertising as I am 34 weeks pregnant anyway. Hence why I have gone into this niche (this is my 5th pregnancy so plenty of advice).

Will start with renewed vigour tomorrow

Doing that tactic you are using won't generate much promotion. For one, what you've done won't fly in most respectable forums. For two, forum members won't click on sigs that belong to people with very low post counts. In essence, for your strategy to work, you will have to spend quite the effort and time in each forum tending to the topics and providing valuable information. Only then, people will click.

IMO, what you are doing is a waste of time. Other people should be doing that for you (posting the link of your site) and this is done by providing quality content that one would want to read, which your link obviously isn't.

    Change your strategy.

Here is what I would do.

    1. Create a mini authority site on the particular subject. This is the site you link to in your sig.

    2. Do not put ANY advertising on the above site. It should be a purely informational site.

    3. Have an email subscription link in the sidebar offering a free ebook that has additional information on the subject. Make it a very good free offer.

    4. DO NOT use a regular IM squeeze page on the site! This is important as it is seen as a major form of advertising.

    5. Once you move them to your list you can market to them at that point.

Not getting enough email leads? Improve the free giveaway. Or make the mini authority site more informational so people start bookmarking it. If you go for bookmarkers, change your free offer from time to time to have a better chance of getting a returning visitor to join your email list.

Thank you, that is really useful.

I must point out that this is literally the first time I have started affiliate marketing (only helped my other half) and I have started from scratch. I have written the report (a good quality report) and am pushing and promoting, pushing and promoting. I know it will be a slow start, but will persevere with it. Just a tad disheartening that is all

The spammers make it hard for everyone. Blog commenting is a perfect example. You see so many pathetic attempts at it that you just have to shake your head in pity.

There are, probably thousands, of wanna be marketers that join forums and instantly start posting "me too" posts everywhere with flashing sigs "Gimme Money". Not directed at the OP but that's the reason so many forums got their panties in a knot.

Yes, when I tried to log in a message screen came up.

It is a shame as what I contributed was useful, and it was a useful site for me to go on for personal use too. Like you say, seems a bit daft to have a signature link. Maybe they are more for those pregnancy 'tickers' that people get to count down their pregnancy.

Had a few ideas today which I will implement and go from there.

Many of the forums have rules to prevent spamming. You need to pay attention to those rules and actually participate. Many forums will allow links in your signature AFTER you've posted x# of times, proving you're a real participant and not just someone looking to build links.

Don't be so quick to put a promotional link in the signature. what a while before adding that. In fact, it should link to the front page of a website, or a social media account where there's links to whats being promoted instead.

Well, I"m interested to know what forum? Hopefully, you are already on the major one: Baby Center. My niche is similar to yours but not pregnancy, and that is where I just started. They allow you to put your business in the signature line, which makes sense. We are dealing with mothers and these types of forums are very understanding of work at home moms. The only rules at Baby Center are you can't do direct sales or special codes. My signature is similar to yours because I am giving out a free guide. I am also part of Yahoo Answers, have you tried that? Just join and search the pregnancy category and start answering. Put your link in the post or source box.

The key with all of this is to give really quality answers and comments. I treat my advice like a blog entry. While most people are giving 1 or 2 line answers, mine are paragraphs with really useful information. On Yahoo if I don't get Best Answer, I'm not happy so I don't let that happen. I do the same on Baby Center. Don't say things like, "yes breastfeeding is the best way to go." Back up your answers with personal stories and make sure your knowledge comes through in your answers. Why would someone read your ebook if your forum posts are crap? Of course, I'm not saying you do this at all, but I just notice a lot of people with website links in their signature lines and pure sh!t in there posts. Annoys me Good luck!

One more thing...I clicked on your link and I just think overall you will do better once you have an actual blog. I would spend some time on that instead of forums. It would be fine if you were in IM but you are talking about pregnancy and I think going to that one page, just isn't personal enough. If I was pregnant, I would want to go to your blog and read about who you are and THEN decide to give you my email address and read your ebook.

If you must stick with that page, instead of "..Contains Lots of Valuable Information," it might be better to list some topics you cover. Or even list some questions that a lot of pregnant women have that you will answer in the book. Just my thoughts.

I have found that you get very little traffic from forums and most people do not want the free exposure. Truly, it is up to you. Most of us focus on selling and getting more traffic to our web pages. Basically, a forum is a place to socialize and meet new persons. Complaints can get you booted off the island in a zap. Look at most of the posts in a forum you want to join. It should not be full of see alice or rorex reprica spam.

Most forums are intended to be communities for discussion and are not meant to be advertising channels. Some forums are very strict and some are very loose.

Take your time and build a relationship with the other forum members. Even in forums that are very strict about no advertising, as you build your reputation by participating as a member of the community, you will begin to earn the trust of the other members and will be able to mention your website at appropriate times.

Signing up for a forum just to get a signature link is not nearly as valuable as becoming a trusted member.

    Have patience.

Really great comments, appreciate all the help.

I have contacted some of the forums to ask if they have advertising options. Also, some of them have freebie sections......I have posted messages asking if I can post my own freebie on there.

I have been through the report and added the relevant affiliate links (and obviously re-worked the report). I have re-worked the sign-up page so that it looks more attractive and enticing.

I have also contacted a couple of people with Facebook groups to do reciprocal link swaps on their pages, for inclusion in the report. Also selling the guide on Amazon (even if I don't get money as an affiliate, I will potentially earn money from the guide itself - received a lovely check today for the books I already have on there).

Have had 4 new signups today..........I know, not many, but it is a start!

Yesterday I only had 1, so I am getting there slowly.

Working tonight on creating my main website. I am lucky that my other half can help me out! Been busy, but good!

Actually up to 15 new subscribers today. Happy me. I know it doesn't sound like much, but I have started from scratch, spent HOURS on my laptop and am pleased to know it is working

I can't argue with what you say. If using a url in your username is verboten, you don't do it. If it's allowed, why not?

I also mentioned that the method I outlined is best suited for forums that you would participate in anyway due to the time requirements. I participate on some forums simply to keep up on what is happening in that corner of my market and to keep my name (whichever one I'm using) out there.

A lot of forums do not like you to post links to your website. Or to use the forums to promote your website or video channel.

I have my own forum. And I have a member on there who posted a link to his blog on the forum. But when I looked at his site I could see it was a Wordpress blog. And that it was related to the topic discussion. And that he was not doing it for affiliate purposes. So I let him keep the link in his post.

But I have taken a look at your link and it is clearly affiliate. And so I would not allow you to post it on my forum,if you was a member. Not even in your signature.

I would not ban you for doing it. But I would remove the link and warn you not to post it again.

I have too have been banned from forums for different reasons. And I also have my own websites and You Tube channel as well as my forum. But when I go on to other forums,I never post links to my websites. And I never create posts looking for attention for my website or videos.Because most forums don't allow that.

A forum is for discussion. Not to promote your website or E book. If you want to do that you can submit your site to a search engine submission service. Not use a forum to promote it.

I have sympathy for people who have been banned from forums for doing nothing wrong. As it has happened to me.

But to be honest I don't have any sympathy for you. Because if you went to a forum looking for attention for your website. Or you are using a forum to promote your website. Most forums will ban you outright.

So it was your own fault you got banned. Next time you join a forum, read the rules first. But I don't think that you will find many forums that will let you promote your website on them. It is not what forums are for.A forum is for discussion NOT to promote your website or business. Andrea Borman.

Well as far as I know forums don't like you to promote your website. And they regard that as spam. So I don't think any forum will let you do that. Andrea Borman.

Well done dude! Keep up the good work.

I think the key is to ask around. For example, I am on several weight loss forums, and I'm not touching my sig until I have a good 50 posts engaging with the members. After that I will contact a moderator or admin to ask if it is ok to put my site in my sig. If they say "no advertising, I'll ask if I can put a link to a page on my site with none - whatever I do, I'll ask them first. If it's a problem, at least you hopefully won't be banned, and can think of an alternative solution.

Another good thing to do is scout the forum for members with a good standing, high post count and are active in the community, look at the links in their sigs (clearly it hasn't gotten them banned), and try to replicate what they've done but throw in an opt in - like someone said up there.

On niches like yours and mine, it's usually personal blogs that are allowed. If you can find a way to catch their email on that blog with no selling intention it's a good start.

Try contacting the forum owner and asking about paid advertising opportunities?
