GoDaddy $150 recovery charge for hosting? :(

Hello all,

I was looking for some advice. I let my hosting expire with Godaddy.. not on purpose but because I was on a lonnnng long holiday! However I came back to discover my hosting account had been disabled/termindated. I thought cool I will just ring GoDaddy get it reactivated as it had only been a few days since it expired.

To my suprise upon contacting them they informed me that I would have to pay a charge of $150 to recover the data.

So I have two choices I have the major site on the hosting backed up however the other 6 sites are not backed up (I know, I know) I tried to reason with them saying that I have been a loyal customer for 2 years payed hundreds in hosting and domains charges, but they were not willing to lower the price.

What would you guys sugest? Thanks!

Well if you want the sites back - then pay.

If you don't care about them or you can mimic them again easily - don't pay.

Harsh words of reality here; This is no ones fault but your own.

Treat your business right and it will treat you right.

(This wasn't meant in a hurtful way - sometimes people just need told the truth )

But, I do think GoDaddy are being a bit over the top seeing as you've been a repeat customer for 2 years.

Yea I see your point, it was sily of me not to backup these in the first place.

I suppose I will way up the options and make a decision.

Just move. Check Google's cache for copies of the text. You just learned why so many 'cheap web hosts' are cheap. They subsidize their low prices with lots of penalties.

I suppose the other option is just to get the hosting again, and rebuild the sites, not from scratch obviously but would still take some time.

I agree with you. They are cheap. Why? This is the reason. If you don't want to pay then check archive.org and look into Wayback machine.

One time Godaddy accused me of sending a spam email (to one of their own email boxes) and suspended 6 domains of mine. I had to pay $1,500 for a "cleanup". It was from a web directory to people with listings and had an unsubscribe button, so they were completely full of crap.

I tried fighting the charge with Amex, but they won. Cheap providers only exist with misleading low costs up front and then they make them up in many other ways. GoDaddy is one of the worst.

Wow, that is a terrible thing to do to a customer, this is why I never recommend godaddy for hosting, the servers are not in the US, the people who run them do not live in the US, they use some of the most backward technology to power the hosting services, they share MySQL resources between users, (horrible method)

Then after you trust them they play the "Stick em up" if you want to be our customer were going to charge you a big fee, makes you wonder if your domains are safe if that is how they do business you have to think seriously about what kind of business does this to its customers.

Yes, I am debating with myself to go back or not to go back, obviously if I do and pay the charge then everything will just go back to the way it was which was by all means fine. I had no problems with Godaddy until now.

How much is the normal charge for your hosting? I really see no legitimate reason they can't provide you with either 1) a copy of your website or 2) FTP access long enough for you to grab a copy of your website.

If you PM me one of your URLS, I'll see if there's a way to 'scrape' the site back into existence from the Google cache.

They normally charge me 8.99$ p/m. Yea I can get the text from Google cache but sure most of them are linked to databases and some are wordpress sites. Which would take some time to restore.

Very typical GoDaddy, it seems from a hundred or so threads here.

It's the kind of story that makes a very few people point out that technically "it was your fault". :p

The reality, of course, is that very few other hosts choose to behave like that with their customers, and it's one of the things for which GoDaddy is rightly infamous.

If it's any consolation, the sooner you get away from them for hosting, the sooner these things will become "historical" for you.

This story is actually rather out-of-date: GoDaddy does in fact now have many of its servers in the US (as well as still having some in Eastern Europe and in Singapore).

I've always been pleased with Hostgator, myself - and they seem to be pretty popular among Warriors, in general. Their customer service is certainly good.

I think the things that really matter are (i) to register and host your domains in two different places, and (ii) to use only a well established host with the longest possible history of customer satisfaction (i.e. don't be lured by "special offers" into trying any new ones without a long record!).

Go with Hostgator - their customer service is 'next to none'.

In the beginning I would always forget to pay my hosting fee's and not once did they ever cut my sites off or do anything shady like GoDaddy have done to you.

I've always thought of Godaddy as the worst hosting deal possible. Hostgator and even Hostmonster are so much better, with Hostgator being the best. I've pulled all of my domains from Godaddy as well. This process took a little time but I just completed it and I no longer do business with Godadddy.

What I would do ... if those sites are important to you, pay the money, and then move them all. I know it's going to cost you in the short run, but you'll be glad you did in the long run. If the six are not important to you, tell Godaddy to put it where the sun don't shine.

Yea think I am going to pay the money and move. Just less hastle in the long run. Also moving hosts would be a good way to ensure I know how to back up and restore

Used GoDaddy once, never will again. Horrible user experience and then they also do things like this.

Why people bother with such crap when hosting companies like Hostgator are so much better? It is not like typing "best hosting companies" in google is that hard.

I guess it all come down to what you think those sites are worth, and how much your time is worth.

If they make decent money, $150 isn't that much.

If they aren't making anything, well then...

Yea, I don't think they are worth that much, maybe one of them might be but I have that backed up, its more because of the work that I put into them. If I just let them go then I will be losing all those hours I put in. However the fact that they aren't making much money makes me consider just starting a fresh

As someone else said, you can get the text back from google cache without paying anything. Settings, plugins, themes - you can just reinstall those, if you really want.

        Starting fresh is also good

Now you have so many options

Any host is going to charge a premium when you allow your domain to expire and then want it renewed after a time.

I've known someone who paid $160 and another who paid $80 to reclaim domains.

The common denominator is they didn't pay attention to business and failed to renew their domain names! A month or two later they discovered their error - and they paid for it.

I wouldn't expect a pass from any registrar if I ignore my own domain and let them expire. The hosting shouldn't have to provide you with a copy of your own website - you should have made a copy as backup.

If these websites are not making money - let them go and start over. If you want them back - pay the money and put your domain registrations on auto-renew.

I don't like GoDaddy - but this is not the registrar's fault. YOU didn't pay attention to your own business - you can't expect someone else to do it for you. Learn the lesson.

I know I'm repeating myself in this thread - but it's such a basic thing to renew domain names that it bears repeating. You made a mistake - no one else is at fault. Decide what to do and keep going.

Godaddy is known for charging extra if you let your domain names expire.

I can grasp where you are coming from if people just let them lapse, but the problem with companies like godaddy is that they have a habit of not sending you an email when the domain is up for renewal especially if you own more than a few domains. Godaddy also has a smoke and mirrors program where you don't see your domains in your account that are going to need renewing, it's all just bad business if you ask me.

oh, and any one managing more than one domain or a number of sites may forget to renew. heck, i got one that I need to renew right now that I will be using that expired earlier this month. And guess what? It won't cost me 160, it won't cost me 80 bucks, it will only cost the domain fee. As far as I know there is a 30 day grace period via ICANN for domains, but sense when does godaddy follow that lololol

Actually, Go Daddy does send multiple renewal notices as some members here
posted before. They especially do that because some notices get filtered.

As to why Go Daddy or other registrars charge seemingly higher fees to renew
a domain name, that depends on its "status". All of them charge their normal
rates for renewing expired names, then they charge higher fees to "redeem" if
the name is not renewed on time and subsequently deleted.

It's just a matter of understanding how these things go. This should help:

Life Cycle of a Typical gTLD Domain Name | ICANN

Just stay on top of your domain name/s no matter what, and you will not have
to worry about this sort of thing. Same thing goes for hosting, too.

This is NOT a common practice. Most hosts have a grace period and even a period beyond the grace period where you can renew.

Silly me - I had just read an email about domain expiring for someone - and read that info right into this thread....my bad.

Ok - how about cached versions of your site or wayback machine? You might be able to at least find the site content that way..

Is it outrageous? I don't know that it is. You say "long" vacation - but you don't say HOW long.

If you failed to pay for hosting for months - they may be charging you for the months you didn't pay in order to continue the account.

Is this a $150 fee - or a charge of $25 to renew the account and re-install multiple sites? Or is it payment for the months missed?

Opps! Didn't see ure thread underneath, all it is is just to restore all the files on there server, which I have no doubt in my mind they still have and simply activate it. Sorry I was paying monthly for hosting I was on a 2 week holiday and it expired during that time.

    palmer9999,

I just found this post. I would be more than happy to waive that restore fee for you as a one time courtesy. If you would like me to do this, please make a ticket at x.co/mail requesting the restore. You will then be issued an incident number. Please reply to me with that number so I can waive the fee for you.

I understand your desire to be safe. The link should take you to support.godaddy.com/support/?section=emailus&isc=smtwsup . You can type that URL in directly to make your ticket if you would like. I will just need the incident number to locate the ticket and waive the fee. Thanks.

Palmer - good to hear that the issue is resolved without you needing to pay the $150. This serves to show that apart from listening only through their own contact centres, it is important for organisations to use social media to monitor the chatter out there.

Nevertheless I would still move my hosting, if I were you. While I use Godaddy to domain registration, I use Hostgator for my hosting. I was made to understand that even within the cpanel, there are more options/services available if you host with Hostgator. My 2-cents worth...

Same thing happened to me, however I wasn't on a holiday. I was recovering from an accident. Anyways long story short my hosting went down and they deleted the same day I was renewing.

It was a shame, but I figured that I could improve my sites, and I am, it will just take some time to build up my mini IM empire back up.

You will note that you haven't seen my 5 links in my sig for some time huh?

GoDaddy usually pummels you with emails when something is about to expire. I guess you were not in town to be able to do anything about it.

If the sites mean a lot to you then pay for it. Living in California I get parking tickets all the time. Two parking tickets equal $150. It's the price of doing business. Just pay the fine.

I would actually like to speak to James as well about my godaddy accounts. As a web developer and marketer I have sold Godaddy as my preferred hosting and domain registration company since 2000 to my customers and I have sold thousands of accounts for them with no commission I might add. Recently I was developing over the past year a new project that included 4 sites of my own. The hosting ran out in December 2013 and I spoke with their customer service rep who was kind enough to tell me how I coud consolidate and use a new type of hosting for their sites and save over $100 since I prepay by the year.

I paid for the next month just to keep my sites up and their account person emailed and I emailed him back and so did my husband, we even discussed migration to one of our other hosting account several times until we could be sure this was what we needed and their account person could speak with my husband about this. Well apparently in the middle of all this Godaddy deleted all my files which contained thousands of images taken in Thailand taken while writing an article for the kingdoms sustainable tourism head. All are now lost because in the middle of all this my lap top crashed and burned. Now I am out years of work, around $40,000 in travel and advertising and I have to say many tears. I called and got angry, I cried, I begged, I waited and I did all the prior things over again to no avail. I would have been happy to pay the $150 to restore them, but they say my files are totally gone. I don't believe that, in fact as a programmer I know it's not true and they coud pull them up but they won't even look for them. I am heart broken. Tomorrow I will be sending out a mass email to all 152 clients that I have referred to godaddy and I will et them know exactly what they did to a very loyal client. I promise you when each of them updates I will personally move them to hostgator.

        I am still stunned.

I would recommend first, that you keep your own backups.

I'll recommend second that you do some further research on a new hosting provider and stay away from EIG owned companies.

First of all: Never. Host. With Go-Daddy. They are ruthless capitalists that don't provide any value that you can't get with HostGator or BlueHost.

Also, never use the same company for both your domain registration and hosting. This way when you have a billing issue with your hosting company you can just get hosting somewhere else and point your DNS records there.

For example, I use NameCheap for domain registration. I had a billing issue with HostGator (my fault), but couldn't come to a compromise that was cheaper than switching to another company, so I switched to BlueHost. I updated my domain registration at NameCheap to reflect the change in hosting, and wa-lah.

And of course, always have a local backup.

    Hello,

If I were you, I will probably ask to my self if it is important to you or not. If yes just pay. if not use your back for the few sites and move on. I know that godaddy is not really easy to deal with sometimes, specially when there are able to make you pay more than the service worth.

Sadly this is very typical GoDaddy. Once a upon a time I moved my mothers websites (Over 15gb of pure content... yes its true) from them to HostGator. I knew this was going to be an issue so I did the best thing I could do. I enlisted HostGator to do it. About 12 hours into the process (they had around 9gb transferred) HostGator told me that GoDaddy was throttling my old web server to slow them down. It took them about 2 days to move the remainder of the site. This ticked me and mom off so bad that we moved all of our domains off GoDaddy as well. That was over 50 domains.

They are shady, shady people. Get your domains AWAY from them ASAP.

At HostGator I've had some tight months where my hosting has slipped. They just ask for the normal monthly fee and the sites are up again in a matter of minutes. I've never had a problem with HostGator and their customer service. We are very happy with them.

Yikes my site went down. I had just polished most of the website and for some unlucky reason moved the backup off my flash drive. I don't have a backup of my own website.
I've been with Godaddy for years! Very happy with them.
Can anyone help out waiving the $150 fee? You'd be my hero!
It seems ridiculously high. I can't afford it. They even offered to get it down to $75.
