It really depends on the site

    You cannot add adsense and
    sit back in all cases.

What specific niche is the site about?

If the keywords you are ranking for and the website is about gaming accessories, why not start promoting ebay/amazon or etc. products?

Ok - So you have done the work to rank 5 in a competitive niche. Why would you have a problem finding way of monetizing your site?

Well unless you have a pure market based site their is no real good and quick way to monatize the site.
CPM is low as anything and normally requires a large number of page impressions to get started.
CPC is based on luck on whether someone clicks on the add, the more you can focus your content to adds the better advantage you have.
CPA is pure random luck or at least the banners are, probably got more chance in winning the lottery than getting commition from them. However, if you use specific content advertising you could be affective.
Amazon and Ebay etc - are probably your best bet, as its so much easier to focus content towards the products. However, the same again if you are selling low value products the chances of earning money from it is small or at least early on.

I would go the Amazon and adsense route. That should take care of you if you have the traffic.

      This exactly.

Place some adsense in your header and the top of your sidebar, then one midway through your single posts.

I think you may be focusing on the wrong thing here. Traffic is more important than rankings. Some sites are nowhere to be seen for major keywords but they have almost the same traffic than the "big boys" because they're scopping up all the longtail demand.

For example I know you are ranking number 5 for a keyword in a profitable niche, but if this keyword only gets 400 searches a month you're pretty much dead in the water.

Simple tip: look at what search terms your traffic is coming from and promote products specifically in line with these queries and not just your niche in general.

Try all of the above and test.

Hard to say without knowing the site. You might also want to look at Pay Per Download game offers, but I would have thought that either Adsense OR Amazon would be your best bet.

If you're going to apply for an Adsense account, better to do it before you monetize the site in other ways.

Amazon could be a good option to monetize your website, you could make some commissions. Adsense is also great, especially for a niche like that.

Google page one is not the be all and end all. If you rank for a popular keyword, you will get dedicated traffic. But, if you rank for a rarely used keyword, it helps very little. Traffic is #1.

How do you know what keywords are worth pursuing?

I like Google Adwords Keyword tool. It is simple. I know it is keyword selection 101. But, it tells you how many calls were made last month from the keyword you pick. You will also know if it is easy, medium, or hard to get ranked for that keyword. How profitable p. 1 would be is a bit of a guess. Your instinct will be a huge factor....will it convert? And....Google is also guessing by how much they would charge for that adword. So, if there were only 150 visits last month, and Google charges a lot for that keyword, you know it is likely to be a high conversion keyword.

Once you bring in traffic, there are multiple ways to monetize. Without traffic---keep working!

It's what you do when no one is watching
that determines what you will be able to
    do when everyone is watching.

Not to be negative but I would stay away from Adsense and Amazon since they pay peanuts unless you are well advanced and know how to work the sytem and put in a lot of work.

I would just focus on finding an offer that you love, there are so many of them out there. Make sure the offer is solid and test it out. Ranking for one keyword is cool but focus on ranking for 10-20 keywords. ; ) Best of luck.

Get Adsense. Build a list. Use Amazon Associates and you'll get 4% out of every sale.

Ranking doesn't mean anything without traffic. See what's the traffic you get and decide based on that. If you've huge traffic, you ca explore CPM banners, else you can try adsense. If you don't have high volume, see which type of traffic you have and what will will convert best. If you have product traffic - try putting matching affiliate products from ebay, amazon, clickbank, cj etc. If you have generic traffic, try some ppv[pop under, pop-up] banners. You can also directly sell ad-space to others who are interested. For that, get listed on ad marketplace.

Try both adsense and amazon, see which performs best for about 1 month. Then ditch the worst one and concentrate on the other.

You sure you have no idea how to monetize it?

    1) Sell gaming products or games via Amazon ads
    2) Find a gaming accessories site with an affiliate program
    3) AdSense, they'll display gaming related ads and will more than likely display World of Warcraft ads. Blizzard's currently pushing a huge campaign to get people to come back to the game and spending BANK on those ads

you have to peddle up your traffic now! just go for list building so that you can capture the ppl who are the mad about games.. Offer them the damn related products from amazon or click bank...if not..you can monetize the list with cpa offers like electronics (ipod,ipad..etc)..

Psychological element: People who intrested in games are likely to buy tech products...

I really have to wonder at some of the responses in this thread! Are any of YOU making money like this?

Gamers are a passionate bunch. First off, you need good statistics here. I'm going to suggest statcounter.com. Just don't use GA. OK, with analytics installed, see if you have more than 1-2 visitors/day. If you don't, then move on to something else. If you have some traffic, then start with an opt-in form and give away your fantastic guide to gaming gear. In the ebook, make sure that you have a url so they can download your latest guide as this industry moves fairly quickly. In your ebook, have links to gear reviews and/or affiliate links in the ebook. I like to do redirects so that you can change the offer and keep the links in your ebook valid. Take a moment to upload your ebook to all the major doc sharing sites.

Now you have a plan. Oh, try Amazon affiliate links first. Then, once you get into better networks, substitute those offers (you did use redirects as I mentioned before, right?)

Regardless how else you monetize it, the number one effort you should always be doing is building a list with your traffic... since that will allow promotion when they're NOT on your site, plus it allows you to recycle your traffic BACK to your site for additional monetization opportunities.
