Why Do We Do Things We're Comfortable With - Although They Aren't Bringing Us Money?

Hey Warriors,

do you know that feeling of rather keep doing something that ISN'T WORKING BUT YOU'RE COMFORTABLE with than DOING those THINGS THAT WOULD ACTUALLY BRING IN SOME MONEY?

I can sit down and write hundreds of articles. (And feel comfortable with it)

I can invest a huge amount of effort in linkbuilding. (And feel comfortable with it)

I can socialice on Facebook for hours. (And feel comfortable with it)

I'm really motivated. Really motivated to do things that don't get me anywhere financially.

"Oh, let me just build that authority site before I start making some money" ... that's one of the thoughts that hold me back seriously.

If you've overcame it - how did you do it?

I'm not really a qualified psychologist (which is odd, considering UCF's campus newspaper said today that psychology is ridiculously popular here :p), but it comes down to an illusion of progress type thing I guess.

For some people, it's the activities that you posted above that make them feel like they're "doing something". For others it's spending their day posting on this forum. There is a sizeable chunk who post here, feel happy, but have the same (or smaller if they do that crazy thing called eating) bank balance at the end of the day.

It's a hard mental block to break. I'll leave tips on that to the qualified shrinks .

It's because to be successful you have to step outside of your comfort zone. success requires risk, it's easier to stick with what you know.

If the things that you do make you happy and you don't care of making money, then do it!
If you want some type of success then redirect your focus to success driven activities. I was a very confused newbie when I first came online but I have a much better understanding of how everything work here now.. I went with a very successful coach/mentor. Learning from someone who had done is it great! It cuts down on all the learning curves and mistakes. However it's up to you to take action...

    VERY good post!

    I have been here too...

The way I got over this is by focusing on an actual goal and being motivated to achieve it and then working out exactly the steps in need to take to get there.

The key is not putting off the "steps" just get them done.

    Thank you, Joseph!

Could there be something different going on with no-money-workers and day-in-day-out-forum-posters?

The first group is not afraid of work itself but more about the results that the work brings, while the forum-posters and WSO-addicted maybe just want to have the illusion of working.

It's not that I don't grow my website by doing the things I do ... in fact, I see it growing. Yet, when it comes to monetization, I'm more than cautious / shy.

    ... GGRRZZRZRZ! ... that sucks ...

Ah, I see what you did there . You tried to separate "work" from "monetization". You're exactly one of those scared people you're trying to pretend you're not (at least how it looks from this side of the fence). I'm not one of those "rah-rah" type of teachers, and as stated I'm not a psychologist so I don't have much inspirational stuff to get you going. However, I will say that you are making excuses, and are in fact pretending to be working towards an end. Man up, you're better than that. Take the risk and get to work monetizing!

Some of the day to day forum posters are actually getting something in return instead of money and what they are getting is actually what they truly want.

For example, some of them might want to be right, these type you will see everyday arguing about which process is better, which business model is the best, which traffic strategy is the best, etc. And when they feel they are right they get an emotional pay-off.

Or maybe having others look to them for advice is what they want, and being known as the guy/girl who knows everything about such and such a subject is the pay-off they are actually looking for even though they think it is money.

Seems to me that you have some personal beliefs about what having money might mean about you, as a person.

There is a huge perception that people with money are dirty, or corrupt, or thiefs, or greedy, etc.

So if you have a belief that if you had money and because of that you are greedy, then that is a belief that is getting in the way of your success. it will be a belief that you will want to get rid of.

      Two questions and a suggestion

If you made money, what would that mean about you as a person?

What kind of person has a lot of money?

You don't have to answer these questions on this forum, just think about them.

Also, check out this site, essential-skills.com and look up 3D Mind.

This process will help you get rid of these limiting beliefs very quickly

        Dear Shane,

        think you've hit the nail.

Guess there are some heavy negative beliefs about money in my head.

Thank you, I'm going to work on that.

    Hey Chri5123,

    thanks for sharing!

The goal you've set for yourself ... was that an financial one ("make XXX $ by end of Y") or did you focus on those things you've wanted to do with the money ("have this nice car by end of Y")?

      Funny you should say that.

I never set a financial goal - as money is JUST money!

ALWAYS aim for a target as in have a nice car!

In fact that was EXACTLY one my goals for this year...

Just thought I would post "The Beast" as you mentioned the car goal!

I always set targets and deadlines before I start doing anything. I don't ever get bored and always love to do it as I feel I am getting closer to it now. Targets could be money or getting something done.

Not sure I get the question here, but if I was doing something that wasn't bringing in money consistently, then I would stop doing it.

Why would you proceed to do something you know won't make you any money? Can't see the sense in that, i'd rather stop doing it, and move on to something that would make me money..
