I think I have an Addiction

Addiction definition:*Addiction is a persistent, compulsive dependence on a behavior or substance. Addiction has been extended, however, to include mood-altering behaviors or activities.
Some researchers speak of two types of addictions: substance addictions (for example, alcoholism, drug abuse, and smoking); and process addictions (for example, gambling, spending, shopping, eating, and sexual activity) Can IM be classified as a process addiction?

Does this question really need an answer? Yes, of course it can be an addiction, like anything else.

An addiction yields a short term reward and skews your judgement and long term planning.

What part of IM is addicting to you? Writing something quickly, posting it and making some bucks, only to repeat the process again time and time again?

    Be more specific.

It's absolutely an addiction. If you need proof, look no further than the WSO forum. Thousands buy products every day that they read to get their "fix" and never implement.

This is very similar to personal development works as well. I recall another thread on here where we were discussing just that. About how people will buy self-improvement material to get their "high," really do nothing to act on the material, then buy more to get that "high" again.

Anything can be classified as an addiction. The catch is, there are healthy and unhealthy addictions. So the goal is to try and have habits and addictions that are conducive to producing a fulfilling life, while avoiding the opposite addictions.

I wouldn't say that's an addiction. I would say a lot of people do it out of desperation and they feel by buying products they are at least getting closer to their ultimate dream lifestyle -- even though we both know that is not the case.

But I wouldn't classify it as an addiction. Most people could stop buying WSO's if they had to. An addiction however is something you would find very hard, almost impossible, to give up.

        Highlighted the important part.

By buying that WSO (or any mmo product) they are getting that feeling, that they are moving closer to that dream lifestyle. When they get done reading, don't implement it, and later, buy another, they are getting that feeling again.

This is the shiny object syndrome in it's most basic form, in my opinion. And a standard display of addiction.

Edit: Sure, it's probably not as strong as physical dependance on heroine or something. But the pattern is still the same.

      Agree!
I'd class it as a addiction buying one, often unnecessary and poorly developed WSO after the other.
Often find myself getting caught up in the sales hype and am struggling to kick my habit.

Its not all so about buying information, there are tons of free threads on this forum that should be worth something, and i guess that's why so many people spend a good amount of time on this forum.

I do think you can develop an addiction to the Warrior Forum - it's very addictive.

That's why I schedule my time on here - don't get me wrong, I love the forum, but if I don't control myself and stay self-disciplined, I always spend way too much time on here than I ought to.
