order from Russia - should I accept it?

hi - in all my years I've never gotten an order from Russia before, but this morning I woke up to see one (it's for a $500+ info-product). Normally I wouldn't sell to russia or eastern europe due to piracy and/or fraudulent orders...(and I say so on my sites, eg "not available in Russia, Iran, Nigeria, (other list of do-not-sell-to countries". )

What do you think? should I accept the order and fulfill, or cancel/refund it? what would you do? just curious - thanks... I don't want to fulfill the order just to see the order charged back and my product then widely pirated/copied all over the place, and this is a russian pirate ordering etc...

Well, If you don't wish to fulfill order, then you don't have to. Its your personal choice. But how do you know whether the products that you sell to other countries like US, Aus etc. won't end up being pirated??

maybe I should cancel the cc order, but tell him if he wants to order, send a bank check/money order to me directly? at least that way he couldn't issue an illegitimate chargeback, and of course I'd probably never hear from him again. or it could be a legitimate order from someone in russia, though I've never had anyone from there order my things before. Also he ordered 2 different items, unrelated, that add up to over $500 in a single order, so it's a bit suspicious. Hmm.

Tempted to cancel/refund it, then ask for money order/bank check sent to me instead. my fulfillment costs on shipping the dvd part of this to him would be less than $100 so not sure what's best. When in doubt I normally just cancel this type of thing; wanted to find out if any of you have had orders from russia before? did they work out?

I would cancel and refund that credit card payment asap. It will most likely result in a chargeback in your account.

No, never had a legitimate order from Russia before.

This. Get your head on straight here: you know enough to have the aformentioned disclaimer on your site, why go against it?

ok thanks guys, I just cancelled the order.. "void" in my merchant account. I'm sending him an email saying if he wants to order then send me a money order/bank check then that would be acceptable. I normally don't sell to Russia due to piracy/fraud so that should be the smart course of action I suppose. thanks...!

You could go ahead and add that stipulation to your website too, and thus open yourself up to potential sales from that country. Although I'd probably say money order only and not a check, since you leave yourself open to fraud in that case too .

Hi - good idea; thanks... will give that some thought on changing wording, for money orders only accepted from... (country list). I don't like cancelling a multi-hundreds of dollar cc order, but from Russia I think it's probably wise to be careful.

It only seems like you're canceling an order worth hundreds of dollars. The order is worth nothing if it results in a chargeback, and it most likely would. So what you're really canceling is a big headache and risk to your merchant account.

We sell only in Canada. I got an order from Hungary once and I refunded the money and emailed the guy and told him why. He was ok with it. If I was you I'd refund the money, even tho it's a lot to lose.

You may also wish to offer the alternative(s) of Western Union and American Express Money Transfers.

American Express Money transfers are basically the same as Western Union and you can pick up your money at just about any Walmart.

Be careful of the Money Orders you may receive - check them over thoroughly and verify with the issuer, if you can because with high tech color printers the fraudsters of the world can print out a money order/cashier's check that is often difficult to tell is fraudulent and it can take up to 21-30 days for a foreign issued cashier's check or money order to clear.

Personally, I never encountered a fraudulent one but I have read multiple times about people who have been burned by them (this is why I always loved Western Union and Amex Money transfers).

thanks - I talked w/western union this morning; interesting they said it's not recommended for use w/nontrusted people, and more for trusted sending nonmerchant amounts from/to family/colleagues... didn't know about amex, thanks. and right re waiting for m.o's to clear fully from bank before accepting, good point.

interesting i told him to send me a money order, instead he emails asking for my bank account information, so likely it was a bad guy/ fraud order/would've been charged back.. dodged a bullet, thanks guys. I'll put together a page on "how to send a money order/amex payment" that I can forward other similar inquiries to in the future, to save time.

I'd put a "don't accept" geo block in my auth.net for russia-originated orders, called them to ask why this got accepted, just checked, I did in fact block those, eg : "Decline Transactions Afghanistan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Yemen; they said to make sure also there's IP passthru info from 1sc
