Would you hire a "Disabled writer" for a tax-credit?

Hi there,

Could you PLEASE spare 30 seconds to fill out this 2 question survey for my school project?

I will be greatly appreciative!

Here's the link to the survey.
Would You Hire A Disabled "Content Specialist" For Tax Credit? Survey

In the U.S., Social Security has a program called Ticket-to-work. In a nutshell, if you hire a disabled person, you could potentially get a tax-credit if they successfully work from home writing for your website. If you own a website, would you be willing to hire a disabled writer for a financial "tax-credit"? My research study is to determine whether a job training & job placement business would be feasible.

Thanks alot! I really appreciate your time!

Answered with the caveat that the work is acceptable.

Thanks John - I think that is definitely something one should consider before hiring a disabled person. It would be the responsibility of our "training & job placement" business to make sure these people would put out acceptable work.

This would most likely be a non-profit organization.

Back when I worked in manufacturing, we farmed out some of our parts salvage work to a few sheltered workshops in the area. The work was simple, but very repetitive and required some attention to detail. One workshop in particular delivered outstanding service, and earned 'Approved Vendor' status for that task.

I wish you well with your project and your organization, should you choose to pursue it...

          Michael,
How much would you be willing to invest in a disabled person's work vs. how much of a tax credit would you desire? That could be an additional survey question.

I'm trying to keep it as less confusing as possible.

Doesn't Articlez.com hire a lot of disabled writers? Not sure if that's helpful to your project, but might be worth getting in touch.

      Hi David,
Thanks for the tip - that does help. I've been considering articlez.com / textbroker.com / various ad. agencies as business that would hire disabled people, but I would think they'd be really hard to get survey info from and a contact source without the right "connections." =)

Would I? Yes! I had one family member who past away and was handicap, another who was wounded in the military serving the country. I could care less about the tax credit, these people need support and we should be there for them.. It could of happended to any one of us! Making money isn't everything, hiring these people because they are cheap isn't right either, it's about doing something good! Feeling good knowing you're helping someone out, and they help you out, and the tax credit, well that's just a bonus!

They still have to perform, even if for their own sense of pride. If they get a whiff of charity in your support, that you are doing it because you feel sorry for them, you've blown the whole purpose of this kind of program.

    I filled out the survey.

Is there a reason you are asking specifically about writers? There are so many other online jobs that would also be applicable.

    Good luck.

  • Hi Kyle,

We've been doing this for six years now, though we don't get any tax deductions nor credits here in Manila. I myself am totally blind. Our company has launched an initiative a few years back, and we still continue to work closely with many non-profit organizations here in Manila that look after the welfare of disabled people here in the Philippines.

This initiative is where we train and hire qualified individuals with disabilities as English content researcher/writer employees and homebased subcontractors, aside from other inhouse and homebased posts like Web design and development, software programming and administrative work. However, my objective back then up until today is to teach them the skills and knowledge they need to first get gainful employment opportunities, then start their own businesses, because duplicating what I did, as outlined by the video below, could most likely improve the lives of many disabled people not only here in the Philippines, but also in other developing countries and even in industrialized nations:

I had to answer in the negative simply because I am a writer myself and am actually classified as disabled but I don't let that stop me.
However, IF I was in a position of needing writing work done, I may consider what you propose. BUT I doubt it would work as I am in Australia and I don't answer to your tax office.

    Kyle-
I filled out the survey as requested and was happy to do so - but only because I know what the TTW program really is.

I can tell you that its not easy to get approved on either side of the coin, whether as a disabled person or as an employer - and its even more difficult as an agency working as a broker for the two, which is what it sounds like you are trying to do. I just applied as an employer and my husband participates as a worker, so I have experience from both sides of it. Free to PM if you like and I'll tell you about my experiences so far.

Otherwise, I wish you luck because if it works out, you can make some money while helping others to achieve their dreams - my husband did.

Done! It doesn't really say what kind of disability we're talking about. If it's a physical disability then I'd be as likely to hire them as a would an "able-bodied" person. It would depend on their ability to write. Just being disabled (eg deaf, in a wheelchair etc) has no effect on a person's abilities in areas such as writing. I don't live in the US either but I'd say if there was a person with a disability who was a brilliant writer AND I get a subsidy of some kind for hiring them instead of a less talented non-disabled person, then you couldn't get me the contract quick enough.

Any schmuck can put words in a document, but that does not mean that any schmuck can write.

I only hire writers who can perform the level of writing I need to have done. If it happens that they are also handicapped, I don't care, so long as they can meet the job requirements.

Technically, I have previously hired writers who have had physical disabilities, and I have no problem in doing so again, so long as the individual will deliver the quality of workmanship that I require from them.

If I knew there was a tax credit for doing so, I would have hired the people I hired previously, simply on the merits of their work. Would I have taken the tax credit? I don't know... Maybe...
