Is it better to send a newsletter as a full email or direct to a website page?

Hello Warriors,

A question for the experienced list builders here. Do you send out your newsletter as a full text email or as a partial message with a link to a webpage?

Any results from testing would also be appreciated.

    Hi Edward,

You said it first. Testing is key. You'll have to test to see what results YOU get.

On one of my sites, I personally include a small snippet of content in the email along with a link back to the site. The reason for this is b/c I have Ads on the page. Hence, it's more beneficial for me to have my visitors click over to my page.

If you archive your newsletters, you may send your subscribers the entire content - but remind them that you have a repository on your site with archives of older ones.

Why not ask your readers what they prefer? You can't go wrong if the overwhelming majority of your subscribers say, for example, that they want your entire NL in HTML format.

If you don't have any readers just yet, just start with with whatever's simpler. Then test the different formats - or as I suggested, take a survey and ask your readers.

    Best!

    - Jay

I almost never go to the website. If the info isn't in the email I just don't want to bother, unless it's really compelling. I don't know about the general market though, that's what testing is for.

Ask yourself what the purpose of the communication is.

I'm presuming you want to sell stuff, then a call to action is required and 'interesting but incomplete' messages are the way to go. Make it interesting enough that they want to read more and send them to your blog/website etc.

I like to keep the hoop-jumping of my subscribers to a minimum, so I tend to put all the information into an email. Saves them from clicking on another link, waiting for a page to load, then reading your message (which in many cases will be competiing with other elements on the page, i.e. Adsense, banner ads, etc).

Quick and easy, that's what you want to give your subscribers. Make it as simple as possible to consume your information.

I prefer nowdays to post my newsletters on my blog. I get
much better feedback from my readers, and of course, it
adds content to my blogs for organic search engine traffic.

If you want me to read it then put it in the email...I very rarely will go to the website for the rest of the story...unless you've really "grabbed" my attention...

Of course, that's just me...like everyone else said you'll have to test it for yourself. I've made plenty of mistakes by doing things based on what I like rather than what my market likes.

I would kind of like write an article and put my link at the end but i would also say things like," article submitters could save you hours a day" and whatnot and link to the site.

i sign up for a lot of the gurus newsletters to see how they write their emails to get people to click on the link
