Hey guys,

So I tried calling Paypal today to get this cleared up and there was too long of a wait on their customer service line.

My question is this:

Can you use PayPal's "Website Payments Standard" transaction system to charge recurring monthly (membership / continuity) payments?

Their site says that you can but I have read in a number of threads on WF that say that the only way someone can pay for recurring billing is if they sign up for a paypal account first.

Is this true or can you set up Paypal just bill monthly using the CC info?

Thanks in advance,

~Sean

    Hi Sean

I just looked through the guide called "PayPal Subscriptions and Recurring Payments" and the only process it describes is where the subscriber has to sign up for a paypal account.

I didn't see an option to do it by credit card only.

    Cheers,

I'm about 99% sure that Neil is correct about this.

Last time I joined a membership site it would not let me just join with a credit card. I had to signin to my PayPal account to join. Once inside PayPal it also said if my account did not have enough money in it when the next payment was due it would use my backup funding source to make the payment.

      Thanks for the reply Rob.

Thats fine for those people that have a paypal account, but most don't. Asking a customer to set up a paypal account, verify and activate their account is a lot to ask.

I probably wouldn't do it if I were a customer.

I finally got through to their customer service and confirmed that customers have to be signed up for a paypal account to purchase a product with recurring billing.

Are there any other viable options other than Clickbank that charge recurring payments on credit cards?

    Hi

You can also use 2CheckOut.com - some advantages and some drawbacks compared to Paypal

But if you are using an automated membership script that auto-cancels members if they cancel (and maybe also pays affiliates), then you may be quite limited in which payment services you can use - you'd need to check the script

Note that most Internet Marketers have Paypal accounts - but it could be an issue if you're doing a niche membership site

I posted the anser below in response to another question about this. Can't tell you WHERE on the paypal site the info is - but it's there if you dig for it.

I just went to the source (paypal) and learned you can set up subscriptions and send an invoice through paypal monthly to allow payment from those without paypal account.

      Quote:
Bill customers, individuals or groups by email with an invoice, even if they don't have a PayPal account! Include fields for item detail, quantities, tax and shipping. The recipient will receive an email with instructions on how to pay you using PayPal
