Question about webhosting, DNS transfer and propagation

Hi

I'm having a few issues with my webhosting, and I wonder if I could pick the brain of those more knowledgeable about webhosting than I.

I've just signed up for new webhosting for my sites, and last Monday (Aussie time), my sites were migrated from my old webhosting, host A, to my new host, host B. When that was done, I then logged in to where my domains were registered, and updated my dns to point to my new hosting, and sat back to wait for it to propagate.

My websites are showing up on host B, I can ping them and the reply comes back from host B's ip address.

However, my email is still going to host A. I can't access my emails on host B, but have to login to webmail on host A to read my email.

I have created a new email address on my domain on host B. It shows up on host B webmail, but when I send a test message, it bounces back saying "no such user".

I've been told I need to wait until the dns have fully propagated, but it's been 4 days now, so it should be all done. The problem is happening with domains registered on two different registrars.

I also don't understand how a domain can partially propagate. It either points to host A or it points to host B. Is it possible that my website be on host B, but my email go to host A?

Any thoughts on how I can remedy this?

Thanks for any advice.

Audrey

    Hi Audrey,

It sounds like you are still using the DNS servers of your original host and have pointed it to the IP address of your site on your new host. Is that right?

If so, there are two ways to fix it. The best way is to change your domain's DNS servers to your those of your new hosting company. There should be an option to do this where your domain is hosted. Somewhere on your new host's site they will list their DNS server addresses. The new host will then take care of everything including email.

The second way is more complex and that would be to change the DNS MX record to point to the mx servers of your new host. The MX record controls email routing for your domain.

DNS records can get a bit hairy and I would choose the first option if possible. Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Hi Phil

    Thanks for the reply. :-)

I'd gone to the companies my domains are registered with, some are with namecheap, and some are with host A, and changed the dns servers for the domains on the registration company site from the server address for host A to that of host B. I did that on Monday night after the sites were migrated. Is that what you mean by the first option?

If so, then I might need to look at the second option, and get my new host to give me a hand.

    Hi Audrey,

Sounds like your new hosts haven't set up the DNS MX records for your domains correctly, ask them to take a look at it.

      Hi Audrey,

I can't post links yet but if you have a google for "mx lookup" there are online tools which will tell you exactly how your domains are configured for mail.

They will show you which DNS server is being used for look-ups and which hosts are configured to receive the email.

That should indicate where the problem is or at least narrow things down.

      Best Regards,

Pete and Phil, you're both spot on. I emailed my new host and asked them to do check the mx records and do a mx lookup, and oops, my email was still going to my old host. All's fixed now, thank you both very much.
