Newbie Q: Low Competition Keyword Search

How do you qualify if a keyword is a low competition one?
I'm not sure if this information is something I should pay for (maybe it's an industry secret? or something in a WSO?) so just direct me to one if that's the case.

I'm using Market Samurai (trial) and I'm done looking at 5 keywords and their ranking competition. Being new to IM, I'd like to start with low competition first and gradually penetrate the high competition keywords. This is for the Amazon affiliate site I'm starting.

Let's say I enter this keyword and MS comes up with sites with low PR for its top results. Does that already mean that it's low competition? On the other hand, I have this keyword that has high PR sites as competition but the on-page SEO is mostly "N's"/ green. Do you think I should look at Backlinks stats instead?

Market samurai is not as good as it used to be, first thing is use google keywords to see the search volume.

once that is done that should give you an indication of how many people search that word.

as its only five keywords your looking for type them into google. At this point I would use two add ons moz bar (free) and page rank (free).

For each keyword use the top three web sites. use the explore option (moz bar this is free) on each site.

use majesticseo (free) to check the number of back links etc etc.

I do not pay to much attention to page rank as this can be a false indication. Page rank only show you the strength of a page, now that page might not have an on page seo done and no keyword anchors.

Most important thing in IM - chose your battles right, don't waste months of hard work for peanuts.

Thank you for your answer. So basically, you give more importance to backlinks and onpage seo. I'll keep that in mind.

I already checked the exact searches in Google Keywords tool but I wanted to check which keywords are easy to rank. What I did was to use the SEO Competition feature of Market Samurai which then displayed the PR, Domain Age, Onpage SEO etc. Now, I hope to know how experienced marketers interpret these data.

Market Samurai is still a fantastic tool, it's the only keyword research software i use. When it comes to the SEO competition tab, i only pay attention to PR and BLP.

I have heard a lot of good things about MS. I plan to purchase MS soon since there's a promotion in WSO section. I get confused with the data though as I toggle everything on.
