YouTube Compilation Videos: Copyright Question

Hey all,

I was thinking about trying my hand at creating a video for my audience that would be a compilation of key points from various interviews and public speakings that have been published online.

For example: Cutting snipets of great content from TED talk videos or something similar and combining them and editing them into one video.

Since I am completely green to video creation and YouTube posting, can anyone help provide me with information on how I would be able to achieve such a video without breaking any copyright rules?

  • AFAIK, the best (most likely to work) way to stay in everybody's good graces would be to add your own commentary, explaining why you chose that particular snip and what the viewer should take away from it. Do it right, and you fall under Fair Use (review and commentary). Just make sure the snip you take is just a small part of the original (in other words, don't snip 12 minutes of a 15 minute video) and give credit where due.

    Edit: Even more effective would be getting permission from the copyright holder and having that permission available for inspection. I once had an author get mad at me for something he found online, and threatened to sue me if I didn't take it down AND pay him for using it. I forwarded him a copy of the email he sent me expressing permission to use that particular content on that site. I got an embarrassed apology in reply...

      I would suggest actively contacting the rights holders of the videos and asking for their express, written permission.

      If you do that, then you cannot really go far wrong.

      Whatever you do, avoid the temptation to go out there and "steal" other peoples' content without asking first.

      I mean how would you like it if someone took your compilation video and used it to make their own mega-compilation video?

  • You have a couple of options:

    1. Use the Creative Commons search within the Youtube video editor. The editor will allow you to find and snip videos based on keywords and there's millions of videos owners have released with a Creative Commons video.

    2. Create "playlists". While you can't snip the videos in the playlist, you can add any public videos in Youtube to the playlist. You can add your own videos to the playlists to include comments, ads, introductions, etc.

    I'm not interested in "stealing" content.

    I'm just completely clueless when it comes to video and YouTube (even how to properly operate a channel), but I'm looking to start utilizing video more with my audience. So I'm trying to seek out the necessary knowledge.
