How Long Should A Product Description Be?

Hey everyone!

I am setting up a ecommerce store using Magento, and I am working on my product descriptions. However, I am a little unsure of what is considered a good length for these. Any input from yall would be great!

Thanks!

I think it would depend on what type of products you're selling and how you would present it but generally, I think you can go for 200-300 words because you'll get more Google love from having ample content versus just a few sentences.

I have a huge background in e-commerce - it is actually good to see that someone has the nounce to write unique product descriptions for each product, 99% of e-commerce sites I have worked on all suffer from the common mistake of using the manufactuer description for everything.

There is no 'ideal' length for a product description. Some products inherently need a longer/more detailed description than others.

From an SEO perspective try to provide at least 200 words of content.

At the end of the description you should include a shrot list of bullet points explaining the key benefits (not features) of the product. If you setup any heatmaps/click tracking you'll see that most people just read the bullet points.

      I totally agree with this.

I'd like to bring a suggestion to this. If you use an informal approach to the whole website, consider writing a short P.S. section at the end of every description, something like your own personal thoughts or a guarantee reminder. It's proven that 80% of the people WILL read the P.S. section, even if they don't pay much attention to the rest of the content.

And again, it doesn't matter how long a description will be, just enough to do the product justice. Just keep it over 200 words for SEO purposes.

      Remember: benefits, benefits, benefits!

      Good luck,
      Dan

Good to know that you're setting up an online store using Magento. For the product description I think 200-250 words is enough.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

I have never done magento before, and I figured I might as well try to do it right. I have been aiming for about 200-250 so I guess I will just keep that up.

It is said a description (it applies to sales letter as well) should be as long as it needs to be. No more, no less

As long as it needs to be. Obviously selling a physical product won't be as long and descriptive of selling an ebook. Make sure you cover everything that needs to be known, and always throw a money back guarantee in the mix.
