A Headline VS A Shop Front

Hello,

I must be a dolt, but as I came home from work...I noticed something....

Why do most businesses (where I live) use ALL CAPS on their signs?

"FLOORS 2 U!"

"CAPRICORN CARS"

"KEBAB AND GRILL"

"HOMEBASE"

"HABIB DRY CLEANERS"

"J'S POUND STORE"

"CASIO...YAMAHA...CLIFF OWEN'S MUSIC"

"P.G.REED & SON. BUILDERS MERCHANT"

"THE POST OFFICE"

"MITSUBISHI MOTORS"

...I thought caps are hard to read...

So why is it they're so widely used in business signage? It's 19/20...

    Hi,

    Although online it may be considered yelling, I think
    the letters are still more prominent capatalized...

    They stand out way better that way!

      Thanks, that's interesting to me on 2 counts...

      1. Online, it's considered yelling.
      2. They stand out better

      Pop Quiz: Which is more powerful?

      I only ask cuz I noticed a 100+ year old business with it's original sign...

      All Caps...

      YELLING at potential customers is OK offline, but will it turn online customers off? Possibly...

    Steve, I guess it's just a question of context.

    What may be comfortable to read sitting at your monitor, might be different to how you read a shop sign while driving by at 30 mph.

      I'd be interested to find out how caps are more readable at 30mph!
