subscription product payment term lenght

Hi,

So I searched the forum to see if such a topic already existed but have not found it. I'm going to launch a product in a few weeks and it works with a subscription model (small payments every month).

I'm going to use JVzoo to handle this and the affiliate setup however I was wondering what would be the best 'max period'?
6 months? 12 month? the full max 36 months?

Of course users can cancel any time they want however I think maybe users will be scared away if I put the standard period to big.

What are your opinions / experiences with this?

Thank you!

I would do 12 months or 36 months.

The problem you run into is if you set it to expire too soon, people might drop off, forgetting to renew their subscription.

Anyone who wants to drop sooner will, without any suggestion from you to do so.

Whatever this product is, does it not provide ongoing value in exchange for the ongoing payments?

I have people that subscribed to W3Counter in 2005 still paying me every month. No reason there'd be a max term on the subscription. When their credit cards expire, they just give me new ones.

You are right about what you say...

It is just that JVzoo makes you set up a fixed term for your subscription offers.

yeah exactly those maxes are enforced. Even if you want to use Paypal's functionality of subscriptions they force a max number of months.

I guess it is to protect people (about forgetting their subscriptions).
Yes it is a system providing an ongoing service which users will be using continuously and thus continued added value for the users.

It is a affiliate link system where the most basic functions are short-url + cloaking but there is a lot more functionality, of them a few which have never been shown / available ever.

You might ask yourself paying for short-url service?! In which you would be right, however I've got a whole list of reasons (benefits & features) however this is not a sales thread so won't go into that now.

The fact that people will possibly forget to renew is indeed the other side of 'the fear of signing up' with a too long preset term I feel..

I think perhaps it will just be a matter of good communication to take this 'fear' away by clearly stating that customers can cancel at at time if they would choose so.
