How can you tell if the domain is valuable?

I am an old member of another forum that appraises domains and recently, I felt tired of doing so as I believe that domain appraisal is getting useless unless someone explains in details why he gave such a low/high appraisal for a domain.

When can you tell that a domain is valuable? Is the monthly search data enough? How about related suffix, prefix, connected words, etc?

For example.
  1. diaper.com- (taken)
  2. buydiaper.com - (taken)
  3. buydiaperonline.com - (available at the time of writing)
Many people would say that the third domain is not good because "buy diaper online" has only around 22 exact searches. In this case, especially for buyer keywords like this, does exact matches matters when selecting a domain even though is sounds good and has a correct grammar?

I have several domains with similar cases but when someone tells me that my domain is not good because of the low exact search for the whole phrase, I just shrug my shoulders...

Let us hear you..
Thanks

Hi Adie - Great point you bring up...

I never put much weight in other peoples appraisals...trust your own instinct.

Recently I was told something similar about one of my domains (micro site), but then sold it on Flippa for $2,700.00.

There are too many so called "experts"...who really don't have a clue...

Look forward to hearing what others think about this...

The biggest mistake most people make is believing the domain name itself holds value. It doesn't. They are only words. The value is achieved by your ability to research and find one buyer, who "needs" or "must have" it. They alone will determine the value of your domain name. No appraiser or appraisal website can determine the value.

Some 2 and 3 word domain names will command a higher price than many single word domain names, because they are more descriptive and suitable for the buyer's needs.

I have sold thousands of domain names. Almost ALL of them have NO traffic, NO search volume, and NO other external attributes. In fact, MOST would be appraised at nothing more than registration fee. They sell for good money, simply because I am able to research and locate the potential buyers that want or need them.

      Hi Gene,

Would you recommend finding end users through search engines or just promote it thru Sedo, Afternic, etc.?.

      Thanks

Thanks Adie for the piggy back. I hope you dont mind.

      Hi Gene,

Good points here. Can you please advise how to find the prospective buyers for your domain? I have several domains and some of looks quite good.

I have a 3 years old EMD domain with 27000 exact US searches and the related product is in Amazon's top 100 best sellers in beauty niche.

      Any advice is highly appreciated.

      Thanks

I totally agree with you Gene. That;'s why I can say that a domain has no value until the right person who is interested to pay for it takes it and develop it...I don't believe with the exact search word anymore especially with the current Google's rage towards many micro sites that have poor content. Makemoneyonline.com not even on the first page of Google so I think it's better to find whatever domain that you think might be good for you and not based on the general consensus, and give your best to develop it...

Gene is bang on with his assesment here IMO. I have also bought and sold countless domains and there is no 100% definite rule with regards to what you'll get. I would say that generally speaking a short meaningful .com is likely to have good value to the right party.

To give an example, a couple of domains currently on sale on Flippa, sushi.com, pasta.com etc. are short, brandable and would have a wide appeal amongst other factors in it's favour.

However, the other crucial point on this is that you need to find a buyer who will pay a price that you're comfortable with. An idea would be to contact prospective interested lead to see if it would appeal to them.

BuyDiaperOnline is just a generic domain. In google's eyes a generic, keyword-stuffed domain is not more favourable than a brandable domain like say DiaperGator.com lol

Is this true? Does Google really favours brandable domains over generic ones?

Every so often they come out with broad guidance saying they are going to de-emphasize this or that. So far in my experience I haven't found much difference either way, I rank both.

Google favors website content, not domain names. If you have a favorable website, a keyword-rich domain still has an advantage over non-keyword domains, IF everything else is equal. The domain is just one small part of the formula. You can easily rank ANY domain higher than a keyword-rich domain with the right website content and authority factors.

    Hey Adie,
I completely agree. Just because a particular long tail keyword has a low search volume, doesn't mean it is worth less. The fact that the domain just CONTAINS such valuable keywords (regardless of the exact search volume), means it is MUCH easier for it to get ranked on Google for very little SEO work. There really needs to be a more accurate way to judge a domains value...

I think a domain is valuable if it has a high PR and a catchy domain. Otherwise, what's the point? For affiliate marketing an EMD isn't worth as much anymore. There are plenty EMD's with high exact searches that don't rank at all. EMD help in ranking but it's certainly not an end all be all.

To PR, did you mean Page Rank?

    its depend with your plan.
you can use keyword domain or your own branded domain.
the most important is you have "The Plan" with the domain

Sorry, but that's horrible advice. Throwing it up on Flippa won't tell you what the market will bear. If I listed my best selling domains on Flippa, instead of thousands of dollars each I would have been lucky to see a tenth of that. If you want to see what the market will bear, do the research. Find potential buyers and approach them one on one. If you've done your research well and can communicate well, this is how you get the biggest sales.

Flippa is great for selling developed websites, not domain names. Yes, there are exceptions, but this isn't one. People shopping on Flippa are looking for wholesale pricing, so they can resell for profit.

        Hi,

It would be great if you can share some tips on how to find the potential buyers (PM is also OK) if you have any.

It really depends on what you want to do with your domain. I used to do a lot of dropped domains with PR hunting. In terms of keyword in the name value they had 0, but it was making me good 5 figure simply by selling links from them.
If you want just to flip sites, then you should look for keyword domains as it is very popular, even though I can easily outrank them with aged dropped domain with no keyword.
