What do you think of when you see the words 'platinum plus' when describing a product or service?

If you see the words 'platinum plus' when describing a product, service or membership program, do you expect it to be of the highest quality? I have noticed some companies use this term to describe certain parts of their business like their 'platinum plus' membership program or their 'platinum plus' rewards program. What does the term 'platinum plus' mean to you?

Thanks.

To me, it means more money out of my pocket.

Platinum Plus is usually indicitive of spending more to be in an elite member with more services or benefits or savings that usually equates to more money spent that doesn't save me money in the long run.

Maybe I'm just tainted from being in IM, lol!

      I'm afraid so Terra lol.

Platinum Plus makes me think there must be a special reason for the vendor to call it that, thus making me suspicious of the true quality of what he/she is offering.

Again another person who's been in IM too long

Words have power. It really pays to study up and develop a vocabulary of words that sell. Imagine trying to promote a product that was a "lead plus".

Really? Even from reputable companies like Visa, DELL, Bank Of America. They all offer a 'Platinum plus' service of some kind. Whenever they describe what their 'Platinum plus' service includes they normally list a whole bunch of extra benefits you will receive. I suppose this is the wrong place to be asking a question of this nature as most people here can see straight through the use of fancy words to sell a product.

I guess another way I could rephrase my question to people in this forum is to ask what do you think the general public (as in people who don't over analyze the marketing strategies behind the product or service they are looking to buy) how do you think they perceive the term 'platinum plus' when it is applied to a product, service or program. Do you think they would expect nothing but the best? Do people generally think that 'platinum plus' means something is a premium and of extremely high quality?

      Thanks.

      • In the consumer market, "platinum" (plus or otherwise) is definitely overused and overhyped.

I don't recall seeing it used anywhere in B2B marketing collateral...

I expect a few extra bells and whistles for a higher premium price. I've seen offers where the only benefit of being a 'platinum-plus' is the ego stroke of being "accepted" - and the acceptance criterion is that your credit card is approved.

I think "here's another spammy IM product!".

Something more unique would catch my eye and make me more likely to keep reading. I've just been jaded with too many 'Platinum" products that were actually far less quality than Bronze even.

It's a way to psychologically tickle the prospective buyer's interest to trust and buy the product. Other providers of content writing services also use that term. There's even a computer virus that's named as Platinum Antivirus.

It means expensive to me. I will want to know how much the Bronze, Silver, and Gold versions are and see a feature comparison chart.

I don't really like two word package level descriptions. I would prefer Platinum then Diamond or something like that.

Anyways, it definitely adds initial perceived value. The trick is to back that up before and after the sale

LOL. Trust you to come up with findings like that Joe, I wouldn't have even thought of checking Bing out for Premium Plus.

The images weren't bringing up anything good, and Youtube had a bunch of bad rap.

No, I did. My response merely demonstrates that I as a consumer care so little about flashy add on words that I felt more productive seeing what other ways the word combination is used.

        Respect all demographics silly.

I tend to agree with you but the term must hold some significance as there seems to be a lot of companies out there using platinum plus to describe their products, services and membership programs.

To me it sounds like it is implying it is of the absolute HIGHEST quality, however I think it could be overused and would lack any credibility to me unless I could see results.

Do you think "monkey see, monkey do" is restricted to our little corner of the commercial world?

About the only place I've seen lately where such labels mean anything is the cruise line my folks favor. They've cruised with the same line for enough trips to earn Diamond status. As such, they're entitled to several perks lesser customers are not. It says more about the quality of the customer than the quality of the offering.

Unless there is some sort of barrier to entry, using 'platinum plus' is just a gimmick to extract more money from the marks. Look at the list of extra services where this is so, and you'll see that these add-ons cost the company nothing or close to it.

It's like the two cowboys who entered a saloon after a long day of riding the range.

"I'll have a beer," the first cowboy says.

"I'll have beer, too, and make sure the glass is clean," says the second cowboy.

A couple of minutes later, the bartender returns with two glasses of beer. "Okay, remind me. Which one of you wanted the clean glass?"

Platinum Plus reminds me of credit cards offers... Offers that I probably don't need but will be charged anyway. For some reason, it also reminds me of a shaving blade brand.

I prefer the classic Gold - Silver - Bronze options.

It means to me that someone is trying very hard to sell the product, and that it is more expensive than it should be.

Generally, I let a product sell itself to me, I tend not to look at the sales copy, because all it is trying to do is get me to buy it.

A credit card is a credit card, there is no difference between a gold, platinum, or a regular card, the names only serve to make those that have them feel entitled to something special when in fact, it is nothing more than a gimmick.
