Would this site be legal?

Hi guys,

I am probably going to purchase a ufc related site where the site gets videos from YouTube of UFC highlights of fights and put them on my site. Would this be legal?

If you just embed the videos in your site then that should not be a problem. But do not copy the videos and create your own...

Yes, as long as you're giving the proper credits.

Don't disagree with the guys above, but the content is likely to be owned by a third party copyright holder. So just be aware if the content gets taken down on YouTube (not beyond realms of possibility) you're going to have little/no content on you site.

So I guess it's a commercial point as much as a legal one you might want to consider.

Yes - you can do this without any problem.

Just get the embed code from youtube and paste into the html tab in wordpress.

You can also get plugins that automatically pull content from youtube and post to your site, but it's best to rewrite the text to make it unique.

Another option is to get a video site theme. There was one for sale here on WF recently for about $10 I think.

  • It is OK if you are just posting the link or embedding the video.

If the videos allow an embed, it should be fine. If you plan on using a service like KeepVid to actually download the video, then reupload it, that is another question.
    Best of luck

I don't think it is going to work.

Dana white hates internet guys who use videos (even you tube). They have filed numerous law suits against sites and go so far as to paying somebody a couple hundred bucks who turn in sites who stream events. I know you are not gonna stream but be careful. Like I said Zuffa is VERY strict even with highlight videos. Until recently, Inside MMA, a very popular show couldn't even use highlight videos. It took them two years of being on HDNET to get permission approved.

As long as you give the appropriate credits and write that you do not own anything -yes that could actually make a difference- and also embedding instead of uploading something downloaded, then yes

If you invest a lot of time and build a big site/s based on this type of content and one day the UFC (rightly) gets all their content pulled from YT, where will your business be then?

YT's current level of copyright material breach is staggering and can't last.

    I agree with Mark72...
There is nothing wrong in trying to use videos but don't dl and ul them as your own.

Better make sure UFC is not in the URL. Just ask the dude that owned UFC fight fan.

I think it shouldn't have any problems, just like the other guys mentioned above - as long as you give proper credit, and embed it from Youtube, and give a reference link at the end for people to link back - then it should be fine!

The critical bit is that, you don't download the video, and upload it as your own.

    Hope this helps.

If you are embedding the video using the YouTube embed code and then writing content about video, it falls under content curation and common license. If you are downloading the videos and editing them and then uploading them as your own, you're in for some trouble.

They can bitch and moan all they want, but if you are embedding the videos, you are giving the proper credit.

I'm assuming that you are using video from UFC and now some guy using a smartphone at the fight...right?
