What Do You Think About The New Firefox?

Tristan,

I like v3.0 in almost every way. There were only two things I didn't like.

The first, you mentioned in your post... 'what happens when you start to type a url into the address bar'. But that was easily modified. I also preferred the old browser zoom to the new one, so I changed that back too. But again, other than those two things, I like everything else just fine!

Terry,

In Firefox's URL field type about:config. Then tell Firefox you'll be careful.

This first one changes the dropdown crap in the URL field:

In the 'filter' field type 'browser.urlbar.maxRichResults'. If I remember right, the value is set to 12. Double click that line somewhere and then enter a value you prefer and click OK. I set mine to zero.

As for the new Zoom feature which zooms the entire page rather than just the text (the old way), I changed two settings.

This one will stop Firefox from remembering the text size you set for specific websites. You may not mind this setting, but I did so I changed it like this:

In the 'filter' field type 'browser.zoom.siteSpecific' (without single quotes). Double click it and the setting will change from true to false. That's it.

This last change changes the zoom from 'whole page' back to zooming the text on the page only:

In the 'filter' field type 'browser.zoom.full'. Double click to change to false. That's it.

I have one complaint.

The seemingly random "Reported Attack Site" errors. I don't know if Google or Firefox, or both, are behind it, but it's not necessary. I can get my own protection, thank you.

Its masterful.... and I actually like the url suggestions most of the time.

But nothing is more valuable to me than the addons. Love those addons.

Cant say I'm too happy about the way it accepts typing into the address bar. Its kind of annoying for people like me that know exactly where they want to go and dont appreciate firefox trying to guess.
A few other small things I dont like as well but overall its pretty much the same product.

Edit: Still a F$%^ of a lot better than IE. LOL

I'm generally a big fan of Firefox.

But I've had Firefox 3 up and running two different times now (trying to give it the benefit of the doubt). Both times I've switched back to 2.0.0.16 before the day was out.

The one thing that I really find tiresome about 3 is the rolling screen. I want to be able to click from one screen to the next without all the movement. I find it hard on the eyes.

Firefox 3's auto-guessing of the url function really bugged me. Fortunately, there's a plugin that makes it almost like Firefox 2. Other than that, I didn't really notice anything significantly different between V2 and V3.

I love Firefox and just upgraded to the new version recently.

No actual difference yet that I have seen except for the thing that you mentioned about typing the URL on the address bar. It looks weird and funny at first. Thanks for the tip, I’ll go change mine now

It's caused me to nearly throw my computer right out the window!

however, I love my Mac too much, but I've come close mind you

it crashes ALL the time, therefore, I switch between Foxy, Safari and Flock - I just couldn't use Firefox exclusively - but the add-ons are cool though

I like it, with the exception of it locking up all the time. I'm a guy who likes many many many tabs open, which used to be fine. But for some reason it stop responding now fairly frequently.

Firefox won't let me view the WF very well..gives me TONS of trouble when broswsing/posting...

I'm using I.E. For the forum.. I use flock too..but overall I quite like the new firefox

I don't like the new firefox so I switched back to my old one. What I don't like about it is that it was overpowering my IE. It completely erased it. Firefox has all those darn add-ons and plug ins that get in the way so it won't allow me to open up all my sites. When I download those plug ins or add ons, it still doesn't work. So very frustrating.

I like the new firefox but I'm actually having the same constant problems with it. It likes to just stop and freeze up for 10 seconds or more at a time for no reason what so ever. The old one never did that, but it's nothing that's making my life truly hard

  With all the minor and major complaints I've read about since its release, I have no desire to upgrade to the newest version. Besides, my 2.0.16 works just fine and dandy.
  
  Hubby has the FFV3 on his computer in order to do some work in an upgraded x-cart site that IE couldn't do .... and he has NO clue why we love FF. He's an IE man. He never has any of the problems with IE that people say they do. He hates FF with a passion. I wish I could put up a sound-proof partition between our desks, but alas - the setup with our tv, stereo, and printer are between us LOL.
  
  I just don't understand why FF is such a memory hog period. That's my ONLY complaint with FF overall.

  Was just wondering, what with the latest push by Mozilla for people to upgrade to Firefox 3.0.4, whether any of the add on issues have been completely addressed yet, specifically the Google toolbar and the Warrior Forum add on utility. I don't know if there was ever a problem with the WF utility, but thought I'd ask about it anyway. I do recall that many people, in the beginning, were complaining that the Google Toolbar wasn't working right.
  
  I've been holding off upgrading, waiting for Mozilla to address a lot of the problems that were surfacing and being reported here when the new Firefox was first introduced earlier this year.
  
  If anyone has any positive news to report about these issues, would be glad to hear from you.

I had this problem and noticed it was always when I had a pdf
tab open. I checked with Adobe and got the pdf reader updated,
and that solved the problem. It turned out that I didn't have the
latest version.

Actually I read a few months back that a focus in developing 3
was to use less memory. I had noticed that 2 did use a lot but

Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General -> Browsing -> uncheck "Use auto scrolling"

That worked for me.

  I had tried all the preference panels, and looked thru the other menus and their most immediate commands but nothing caught my eye to suggest that drilling down would get me what I was after. Pays to just drill away, I reckon!

  I agree with your satisfaction in Firefox 2 and not really feeling a need to upgrade. V.2 will continue to be supported through December of this year, so a person could be just fine with v.2 at least until then, if not beyond.
  
  I don't like a lot of change or turnover in my basic working tools, such as my computer, browser, email, operating system, and wordprocesser. I also don't like to keep relearning processes & technologies. In the past, I've kept my basic tools unchanged as long as possible.
  
  (I also tend to drive my cars until they fall apart - one nice-running old Toyota lasted more than a quarter of a million miles and I only gave up on it because it got stolen and the thief trashed it.)
  
  However, here's the problem I've encountered in doing that -
  
  As time goes on, while I'm keeping my systems static and constant, the internet world is changing around me. Over time, some of my older functions and processes don't work as well as they used to, or there are new things that work better. Or improved security processes.
  
  When I put off upgrading along the way for too long, and then discover I really need to make a change, the changeover can be technologically more difficult and quite personally disrupting.
  
  On the other hand, if I try to keep up with every latest new thing, that can mean quite a bit of busy-ness with accompanying distraction and "lust for more."
  
  So for me, the optimal approach is a balance. I automatically do the minor updates and such, virtually without thought. I wait on the major version changes until I'm in the mood; and I'm less busy; and / or I've begun to get a sense that I may begin to be less . . . competitive or flexible in some way.
  
  That way I keep down the shock level of widespread major change, while also avoiding the too-busy-chasing-around syndrome.

I do lots of research online. Unfortunately, many marketing gurus like embedding videos which all start at the same time when I restore my browsing session. This leads me to my main issue with FireFox 3. The browser locks up my machine and makes it very unresponsive, even with the dual-core cpu. Also, I will take a break and come back to the computer to be greeted with a screen that says "FireFox has encountered a serious error and must close..." Wow, how annoying. With 2GB RAM you would think they had better memory management, but they don't. I guess when you have over 120 tabs, things get weird.

But I was looking for answers to specific questions. Anyone have anything to say regarding the add ons issues? I've been doing an internet search, but have been getting conflicting feedback.
