Flippa: Est April 2012 | 2,5 million visits, How, How, How?

I've been visiting flippa lately and came across some sites established earlier this year.

They have some serious traffic to the site.

Can someone tell me how they are doing this?

      and I have seen a number of sites being sold on flippa established a few months ago and having visitors as per the G analytics ranging in the hundreds of thousands to this one in the millions.

      the 2.5 was just the highest. dont focus on the 2.5 specifically.

  • Well, the highest traffic site listed on Flippa is a free web host and DNS service. Their reported traffic number is really the combined traffic of all the free sites and parking pages they host, not the traffic their own site gets.

    The second highest traffic site listed on Flippa is a MegaUpload/MegaVideo clone. It's no secret that illegally hosting the latest episodes of TV shows and movies will get you millions of visits.

    The third highest traffic site listed on Flippa is a web stats company. Most of its purported traffic is probably automated hits from their browser toolbar. It pings their server for every website every user with the toolbar installed visits. So their "traffic" isn't really people visiting the website at all.

    So to answer your question: you too can get huge traffic numbers by either reporting artificially inflated numbers that don't correspond to website visits, or by committing international crimes.

  • If it's not the seller getting scammed by low ball pain in the neck buyers on flippa its the seller scamming the buyer. I have sold a few sites on that platform and to me most of the buyers were a pain in the neck for the relatively low dollar amount I received compared to high dollar amount i had to spend just to get the site listed. Your better off developing your own buyers list.

    • Dunno about that. I've sold several sites there for between $1,500 and $90,000 and was quite happy with all the buyers. I don't think I would have found them that quickly without Flippa.

    You have to be careful when considering a site on Flippa that says it has a lot of traffic. Before I really knew what due diligence was, I bought one only to discover that the traffic was purchased from a cheap, junk traffic source. It was still going after I bought it and I had to contact the seller and get her to remove the site from those sources, so I could have meaningful stats and start getting real traffic.

    As for referral urls for the traffic, so you can see where it's coming from.
