I talked myself out of it, last year.

I just signed up for this year.

It's tempting. I could even cheat, since I have a half-finished novel on my desktop.

There are normally a few Warriors participating, each year, I think. I've put it off for a long time but have no excuses for this year, so I'm "all in". Maybe I'm asking a little too early ...

I do too- I actually began working on mine three years ago and haven't finished yet. And since I'm just starting out as a freelancer I really have no business participating. But I might anyway- I LOVE NaNo! For the hell of it I actually set it up for my students (inner city middle school kids who hated to write) and they went nuts for it. So whether I do it or not, I'm a big fan.

I've got my novel idea: comedic cross country road trip as two friends try to find and fight a grizzly bear. Random? Yep, but it's going to be awesome.

Joe, your story just doesn't ring true. Face it, you're a lover, not a fighter...

You know, on second thought, stick with the original idea.

It's tempting, but not going to happen for me this year. It always seems there are too many other things going on to commit to working on it. No sense doing something if you know you can't commit the time to do a great job.

Well, with your fascination with Disney, which happens to have many people dress up in bear and various other furry costumes, it doesn't take broad mental gymnastics to get to my assertion.

In fact, THERE'S your novel. Kind of a twist on Lars and the Real Girl (2007) - IMDb

I did NaNo last year for the first time (successfully). I haven't quite decided whether to do it again, but I'm leaning toward yes.

Have you done it before, Alexa?

Nooooo, so far I've always come up with an excuse.

But this year I ran out of them, have something specific that I want to try to write, have absolutely nothing else to do and nowhere to go, apart from my "routine business stuff", and have promised myself I'll do it. So I insist that you join in, Laura (and that way I might even feel slightly less guilty about having owed you a p.m. for about 2 months  ).

I've just signed up, haven't even posted my profile there, or anything, yet.

But am determined to write my 50,000+ words of fiction, this November, even if it's only "first draft" ...

It's only 1,667 words per day ... how difficult can that be? I probably write that number of words in posts here, most days.

        You can do it!

Hey, I picked up Writing A Thriller on your suggestion in another thread. Excellent book. There's something about creating characters in there that might have saved my hiney. Very readable and informative.

Ooh, I'm glad you liked that. Yes, very readable, isn't it? André Jute has a website, these days, as well. (Interesting guy, by all accounts. He's recently been very critical of the Stieg Larsson trilogy which has found such worldwide fame. I suspect his observations may be correct, too ...).

LOL, no worries. As long as I know you're not purposely trying to avoid me (are you?) Okay, I will do it too, then. I guess that's all the encouragement I needed to commit.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give is this: Allow yourself to write total crap! First drafts are rarely great. I always thought if it didn't come off my pen (so to speak) in perfect form, I must not be any good as a writer. Fortunately, I got past that ridiculous thought and realized that it takes hard work and lots of editing and revisions to write well!

Yeah, it's really not too bad. I've found that just one scene is usually way more than 1,667 words.

I'll be doing it, though maybe not officially as I'll probably start well before Nov. I've got a long sequel to a recent novella planned.

Not to hijack this thread... Since there are a bunch of fiction writers participating here, would anyone be interested in review swapping for Kindle books? Rather than respond in this thread, PM me. I'd like to get a group of serious folks together.

I actually just heard about this last year. I thought about doing it, but of course I procrastinated - started a few chapters and never finished it. Maybe I'll actually break that sucker out this year.

Just curious, though, (besides a completed novel, obviously) what do writers get if they reach they 50,000 word mark by the end of the month? What ever it is, it's probably better than what I would have if I participated in the "No Shave November" challenge...

Yeah, but I gotta shave twice every day, or I get a five o'clock shadow something fierce! And people give me funny looks when I let it grow out...

The "twist": It was a muscial all along.

This I gotta see. But maybe you should make it a children's book instead, since you might have a little better chance at getting it published...

On second thought - maybe not. I can see that ending badly.

...Not with my brand of humor. On a serious note though: is publishing part of the challenge, or can we just do this for fun?

From what I understand, publishing and polishing aren't part of the challenge? We're just supposed to finish the first draft of a novel by the end, right?

I think the challenge is to just get the novel penned and pretty much planned out, then we can go back and polish it later.

The more I think about it, the more I really want to do it now. I guess it depends how much other work I've got during that time though...

"Not to spend money with Amazon this month" is an absolutely hopeless resolution, isn't it?

I've rarely got beyond the first week of any month, with it. I've given up even trying, now.

Looking forward very much to seeing Sharon, Rose, Laura and others above at NaNoWriMo this year! (It'll be like a chicks' night out).

I WAS going to write a novel...but I think I'll be sticking to mini-novels. And for those of you who don't know, Kevin Riley (that's right, the Hamster King himself), has started a publishing company called One Bite Reads. You can learn more about it here: One Bite Author Program - Get Published & Promoted With One Bite Reads

Although, maybe it would be a good idea to start a Skype group to hold each other accountable so we get our writing goals done every day. Could also help with writer's block and such.

I like the mini novel concept and might try it. I can see that modern readers might like shorter fiction. If marketed right, it could really catch on. Historically there have always been forms such as short stories and novellas, but we might be ready for a new version of this for the digital age.

Okay - I might be in. Um..........what happens when you finish the book? Does someone else get some sort of rights on it? Is there an incentive other than personal accomplishment?

I have the story already started actually - but had to put it aside. I have one to finish in oct. so it's a warm-up. I could be ready to do this in nov.

Noooooo, absolutely not. You retain all rights. You don't even have to let anyone else see it, if you don't want to. (If you want the "certificate"/"badge" and stuff, you have to submit it to their automated counter to check the number of words, but nobody reads it).

Okay, Alexa - I'll put the "pedal to the metal" to get this other stuff done in time. I just got the pic for the cover of my first kindle book so I can have that done this weekend - then it's on to finishing up Saving Ricky: The Second Rescue before November.

My November novel will be called "Dowser" (Unless I think up something better in the meantime) -- a ghost story with a splendid twist at the end. I've put it on the shelf to handle priorities and rather than an excuse not to write it - I will have an excuse to get it done. Awesome. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm in! I figure if I use some kind of talk to text software, it shouldn't be that hard to finish a novel in time. I even picked up this helpful book, How to Write Romances. It's a bit dated (1988, lol) but still very useful. The author basically explains all the conventions and formulas that the big name romance writers use.

Good luck to everyone who is trying this for the first time

    OK, I'm signed up.

From what I understand, publishing and polishing aren't part of the challenge? We're just supposed to finish the first draft of a novel by the end, right?
Right -- the challenge is to write 50,000 words without worrying about editing, worrying about whether it's any good, etc. You dont' even have to finish the novel -- you just have to finish the first 50k words. (Though some people will write novels that are 50k words, so those folks will finish their first drafts.)

I love the part about how it doesn't even have to be good. Write with reckless abandon!

Probably why the challenge is so short. Given any more time, one would probably hem haw around and not get it finished. I know I would... I procrastinate somethin' fierce.

But with only a limited amount of time to write, I'd worry more about getting it done than whether or not it's good. A first draft is never good, but that's the editing and polishing phase is for.

      LOL! Send her over, Dave.

I'm getting excited about the challenge. Typically I like to plan a bit, but I'm considering totally flying by the seat of my pants. So maybe I'll have an idea of where the novel should start and where it should end, along with a few major plot points, but no heavy planning between now and Nov 1st.

Hmmm. That would add to the fun of it, at least for me. And it's different than the way I usually write. Maybe it will free up my creativity.

What's everyone else doing? Are you going to totally plot it out before Nov 1st? Or will you be lucky to slide in Day 1 with an idea? Or something in between?

I'm doing what you're thinking of doing. I know what the starting point is, and I know where the characters are going to end up. I've pulled a few random ideas from joking around in this thread that will manifest themselves into plot points.

Other than that I'm just inserting my characters into the world, giving them a goal, and seeing how they get there as I write.

Last year I had no outline, just wrote it as it came to me. I'd like to try a basic outline this year because it's going to be a trickier novel to write. I need to have a plan or it's going to explode in my face.

I think I'm probably an "outliner" rather than a "pantser", but I'll do my outline on 1st November. I do already know who I'm writing about, and why, and roughly what happens to them, and why.

I've been reading most of a writers' forum, a little bit at a time, for the past 3 months.

Whooooo weeeeee! I am shore nuff all over this one! I LOVE nanowrimo! I ain't shore what it is but if Alexa is gonna be there it has GOT to be good!

Actually, I was just pullin your drawers there! I really DO know that that Ntional Novel Writin Month is and it has done motivated me to write my first novel! I tend to write "Hillbilly Erotica" but Alexa has motivated me to go in a brand spankin new direction! I am gonna write some "Paraunnatural Romance" and it is gonna feature vampires and wearywolves and all that! Let me give you a little sample from my new novel...

"Cletus was a vampire and his truest love Alda was a wearywolf. They was in love but they came from different sides of the woods. They tweren't together much so they wanted to do somethin that didn't suck and they could have a howlin good time!"

And then later in the book...

"Cletus looked deep into Alda's eyes and saw the passion what burned there! He saw the hunger and the yearnin and it made ole Cletus's long johns get all bunched up! After he got them unbunched he ran down to the highway and got some supper to soothe the hunger he saw in Alda's eyes! After they had eaten, they got down to some serious lovin! Cletus slowly lowered his overhauls! Then he run behind a tree to take a leak cause he had drank too much shine!

After Cletus got back he told Alda, "Alda (he called her Alda cause that was her name), I just cain't stand to stand here and look at you like this" so he sat down. Alda sat down too and she looked deep into Cletus's eyes and saw the desire that was in them eyeballs. She KNEW that he had run out of shine and he was desperate for more! She reached up and took Cletus's head in her hands and slowly, oh so slowly, moved her lips to his. Then, lovingly, like the brush of a feather, her lips met his and they swapped tabacky!"

That there is all you get for now. I just wanted to give you a little sample so you would be gettin all hot and lathered up for National Novel Writin Month! All you writers get involved and make little Alexa happy!

I'm so in! I just saw The Big Year. This year has been a hard one for me and I think I need my own "Big Year" accomplishment this year. I've attempted Nano in the past....got to the halfway point a few years ago and was discouraged about trying again. But I'm going to do it in 2012. This year I am planning ahead.

My goal between now and Nov 1st...

Learn to be a bit more efficient and productive with regards to my regular workday. My idea is to take on the NaNoWriMo challenge WITHOUT extending my work day in any significant way. In other words, I want do do my regular work AND my NaNoWriMo writing in the same amount of time I currently spend doing regular work only.

Please, hold your laughter until the end of this post.

(Ok, this is the end of the post. You may now guffaw, chuckle, snort, giggle and laugh.)

I can relate to your intention but not to being able to work that way. I've had a rule almost since I began writing. That is to get at least 2000 words down for every writing session.

Last summer I was writing a novel. I was really inspired. I had many days where I was able to get 6000 words and even more a few times. I sat at the computer for up to 16 hours with only food and potty breaks. I loved it.

There are only a couple of things that are better than being in the zone when writing. I can't let a schedule interfere with that outside of strict commitments. When you're hot, you've gotta run with it. I do realize though that not everyone is crazy like I am.

Totally agree with you on that point -- when you're in the zone, you keep writing. And indeed, when I get in that zone, I'm not going to say "Well, my time is up for the day." Rather, I was talking about those days when the muse isn't being as cooperative as one would hope. In that case, to stay on track, I'll still write. But I'm more likely to quit when my regular workday is done.

Here's to the muse coming out to play and all of us getting in the zone come Novemember...

R Hagel, if that is your goal and you know it's achievable, then more power to you. Personally I don't have enough story writing experience to know whether or not I could pull that off. But I will probably spend just as much time online as I do now, just less Facebook and Twitter.

I'm using Scrivner to draw up character profiles, do research and write up an outline. When I last did nanowrimo I was just flying by the seat of my pants, which wasn't the best approach. Admittedly, I am scared out of my mind this time around. But I have a month to prepare, and so I will use it wisely.

I'm also looking forward to the write ins. Didn't get to attend any last time. It will be great to meet other wrimos.

It's not going to be that much of a problem for me. It's the refinement of what I write and making sure the plot doesn't fall apart under a little bit of scrutiny that will be the hard thing for me. But as far as several thousand words a day.....well, you've seen some of my posts in here. Nuff said.

Thanks Laura - I just posted. I've got a huge question about Pen Names and accounts at Amazon, too. I didn't ask it there as I don't wanna inturrupt introductions with it. I'm interested in seeing who all will show up. One of my facebook pals just asked for the link - he's been looking for one. He's in the UK - hope that doesn't matter. The more the merrier.

Anyhow. I have a Kindle account and just released my first work - it wasn't fiction and I used my own name S.A. Taylor on the copy. Now I am writing a fiction and would like to use a pen name. That's the situation.

My question is - can I use a pen name for one work on the same account that I have work under my real name, too?

Yes, you can. I have it set up so that where it says "Hello Laura Burke" in my Author Central account, there's a dropdown with "Serena Casey" that I can switch to. Problem is, I can't remember how I did it! But I did find this thread here on WF that might help: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...e-account.html

      Two NaNoWriMo questions ...

More important question: does anyone know - if you "create your novel" on the NaNoWriMo site wth just a "working title", can you then edit/change the title later? I'd like to think you must be able to, but I don't know ...

Less importantly (perhaps) ... who can suggest a title, for me? I need a title ... I really, really need a title. For a story about a young woman with something like Asperger's syndrome, who struggles for a living teaching art at a college, and occasionally forges early/mid-20th Century paintings for a local, crooked gallery owner, has affairs with the wrong people, and ends up on trial for a couple of murders she (probably) didn't really commit at all. Who can offer me a title? New or used ... suggestions invited and very welcome!

I believe you can - I just now checked by going into Edit Novel Info and could still change my title from last year if I wanted. I had put the word (tentative) after it, and so far I still haven't made a final decision on it. In any case, it appears not to be written in stone.

Thanks very much! I'm thinking about maybe using "Highly Irregular" (suggested by "Slightly Irregular", above), as at least a working title. Quite nice.

There was a crime fiction novel called "Slightly Irregluar", in what looks like quite a popular series, published in 2012 and although there's no copyright in titles, I'd rather not use an existing one, just in case I decide to keep it. The only "Highly Irregular" I can find, as a novel, was published in 1969 and is now out of print, so that might do for me, I think.

Unaccountably, it feels that having a "working title" makes a huge and disproportionate difference to my ability to get started.

I've almost never tried to write fiction before.

Glad to be of help, Alexa. Without knowing much about the story it was hard to be more specific. One of my favorites was, Almost Perfect. I also liked Bootleg Dreams. I really like brainstorming of almost any kind. Titles are always fun.

I suck at titles - my own is just one simple word "Dowser" for now unless I can think of something better later.

About yours? How about something like "The Fine Art of Indiscretion"?

With me, if a title doesn't hit me immediately, it's a royal pain the patoot to think one up. I'm not sure I have the right one for my book. I might never have the right one for my book. If it sells, it will be good enough I suppose. I usually don't have much problem with the cover pics, though, and this time I'm completely blank. I hope that during 30 days I'll be able to crunch that problem though.

Oooh, it starts in only hours, now ...

I wish all Warriors well for it, this year (and hope none is adversely affected by that hurricane?!).

My working title somehow ended up being "Degrees of Freedom", but I feel comfortable with it, anyway.

NaNo's site seems unbearably slow, at the moment, with just under 13,000 people online there, they say ... I hope it isn't going to be like this for the month?
