Outsourcing - making moolah while you bum on the beach!

Forgive the silly title but I recently read a marketing book where the author confessed to actually outsourcing almost all his online tasks! Admittedly, this particular marketer was highly successful at what he did and could afford to pay for as much 'help' as he wanted.

My question is: what, if anything, do you outsource? And how does the average marketer find the best people for the job/s?

I recently had a Wordpress project completed through Elance.com and was impressed by the speed of work, efficiency and low price charged. I considered posting another listing for article writers but wasn't sure if the delivered quality would be adequate; (Ezine Articles can frown so).

What is your take on outsourcing? Please discuss. Any recommendations?

        Hi David,

I actually work for John Jonas and I'm sure he would be more than happy to help you out. To give you an idea of what else you can achieve through outsourcing, I recommend that you sign up for his webinar at replacemyself.com.

About your question on what tasks you can outsource, well, you can pretty much outsource everything. As one his VAs, here's what I do for him:
        • write articles, press releases, blog posts,
        • maintain his social media accounts
        • monitor and respond to forums
        • ebook publishing
        • Wordpresss
        • SEO
I actually started out as a writer. But he really encouraged me to challenge myself and be more than just a writer. He provided me with SEO training and right now he's letting me study to become a developer.

I outsource most of my graphic work like sales pages and eBook covers. I'm very frugal though and every cent I earn is hard earned so I'm usually very reluctant to outsource. But when I don't have the skill or my time would be better engaged doing something else, then I outsource the task. Thus far I've used the Warriors for Hire section of this forum and I haven't been disappointed. Hope this helps.

You need to outsource the stuff that you may not enjoy doing. Whether it is content writing, banner creating, coding your site etc.

Keep on doing the stuff that you enjoy, but the mundane stuff, give it off to someone else to handle it.

It will help you save a lot more time, trust me... it's worth it.

I outsource the things that I get no joy from doing. I still, personally, do the other things I love about this business, hands-on, every day.

I think there's a wide range on this board, from people who outsource 99% of the work and are just the rainmakers, to people who are jack of all trades and do 99% of the work themselves. That just goes to show that it can be done - outsourcing everything, but the question is a highly subjective one and comes down to - what do you want to do with your business?

In a word, 'make money'! Or more of it. I hear of so many online marketers who seem to be working ridiculously long hours and it makes me wonder why they do it. There are certain online tasks that I do enjoy doing. Social media updates, article writing etc, but I find it impossible to be an effective 'jack-of-all-trades'!

I much prefer to develop a workable system with my marketing efforts then duplicate this by utilising the efforts of others. Living a full-time lifestyle online is no life at all I reckon!

I would love to outsource everything, but after trying to outsource writing tasks, which I personally hate, I understood that it is not easy to find quality writers. Even if you pay high price, they often use spining software and I endedd up spending more time checking them. But I still want to outsource as much as possible.

You just picked the wrong text providers. There are low cost providers that produce quality. The instructions just have to be clear and if you need keyword-based text, you have to provide a quick outline or theme cluster. You also have to be clear as to the purpose of the text.

Outsourcing lingo is getting distorted here (see Silas above). Think of outsourcing as anything that YOU do not do yourself. Hiring a full time employee in house, or hiring a virtual assistant and paying them to work for you overseas are the same thing in my book. They both involve someone ELSE doing tasks.

      I differentiate.

Outsourcing to me is hiring or contracting work to a company or person that is not directly under me doing tasks that would normally be done by direct employees.

I don't see a President or CEO of a company being the one who "outsources" work to people.

99% of the business world shares the same definition as I do.

When it comes to a business, I always think of Robert Kiyosaki's Quadrant Cashflow. For it to be a real business you need to be able to leverage other people (Outsourcing) and have the business not depend on your to grow or continue to enjoy success.

I wouldn't suggest to bum out on the beach instead build another business, have some fun days but never stop! Remember your competitors won't stop and their will always be a hungry new dreamer aiming for more! Never lose the hunger while still enjoying every second of the journey!

I agree with OmarNegron... Robert Kiyosaki's concepts on leveraging does work, especially with the internet marketing field. I find outsourcing helpful, especially if the outsourced staff does really well.

The concept of leveraging allows us to move a step higher with our biz and focus primarily on the more important tasks we need to spend most of our time on... or, if not tasks at all, perhaps coming up with better strategies to run the biz or let someone run the biz..

I'd also recommend you to read "Retire Young Retire Rich" by Kiyosaki for more on leveraging.

Outsourcing is indeed a good start for your David. There's a lot more work done when you outsource, giving you more time to work on bigger and more important projects. Most importantly, you pay other people to work on the repetitive, low-skill tasks, and boring tasks of your online business.

Yeah .. there seems to be a connection lol.

I am a firm believer in charity starts at home. Some might even consider me somewhat of a separatist.

There are a lot of people in my hometown hurting now. I know how I want my material to turn out in the end. Taking those two facts into consideration, I find it more beneficial to teach someone local how to do things the way I want them done.

Now there are things that need to be done that either have no local takers or to be honest .. I do not understand well enough to train myself. I still feel charity starts at home.

I find it almost repulsive that people start recommending odesk or fiverr or whatever when we have Warriors here needing to make money and just as capable as any outsource farm.

This is probably one of the most misunderstood areas of marketing online (or offline).

You will see a lot of marketers outsource BUT you need to know you are going to make a return. So therefore you need to make sure that the actual system, site, articles etc... has ALREADY proven to make you money and how much before you outsource.

You can end up spending a lot of money with no return if you are not sure what you are doing with outsourcing and you will need to manage the people you pick to do the job wisely.

Once you HAVE found your "golden nuggets" i.e people that work well and do a decent job hold on to them like gold dust!

My take on outsourcing is that you shouldn't do something because you can.

    You shouldn't do everything like:

    - Writing articles
    - Syndicating articles
    - SEO
    - Making videos
    - Uploading and managing them
    - Traffic
    - Copywriting
    - Managing social media
    - and on and on and on...

You don't have to personally do all these things to be successful though a lot of people think just that. In a traditional offline business you would not do every single thing yourself would you? Maybe you're going to restore the interior, or get leaflets done, or you need to keep your accounts in check but you're not an accountant or some other task, would you learn how to do all those and do it yourself? I highly doubt it.

There's loads of little tasks that need to be done for a successful online business, but it doesn't mean you should do them even if you can.

Concentrate and put all your efforts on what matters, which is growing your online business, and that usually means: Sales. Which entails marketing.

So those two aspects is what one should concentrate on.

Always try and get maximum leverage out of what you do. Wrote an article? Get that turned into a video, a podcast, an email etc by someone else and continue doing what generates the most growth.

It really will vary depending on what you need.

For all of the really common things like content/SEO/design simply using sites like oDesk or the "hire a member" type sections on forums, including this one, are a great place to start.

The answer to outsourcing is never going to be the same for any two people. You need to ask yourself these questions:

What am I very good at? If you are a very good writer and have the time, do your own writing and outsource things like graphics, SEO and coding your website. If you are a great programmer but a so-so writer, outsource the writing.

What is the value of your time? If you can outsource something for less than your "cost" of your own time, outsource it and spend your time on your most valuable activities. Even your free time has value. If you wouldn't work for $10 an hour, then why would you spend all day doing something yourself that you could have paid someone $70 to do for you? Take the day off and live your life.

If you have something that needs to be done and it's taking you forever to get it done knowing it's important, then that is something you should outsource. Clearly you're putting it off for a reason right? It could be lack of knowing how to or just don't want to. We've all been there at some point, but don't that stop your progress. Outsourcing is pretty addictive once you got the capitol to hire others you'll smack yourself for not doing it sooner.

    Hi David,
I did a lot of outsourcing back in the day, although these days I do zero. Back in the day, I liked the cost, but depending on what I was paying for, I didn't usually like the service or product.

This being said, my best quality for price outsourcing came from article writers, ($3 an article and they were good,) and some SEO providers, (provided me a report every week and did a good job for like $20 a week.)

Such things as software was a HUGE flop. Relatively cheap for what you get, but often the software would break down after a month or they would have back doors in their to their own sites. Some projects like my recent one, most outsources would not even touch, (and those that would wanted over $100000 for the project.)

I do all my own software development now and have a team under me that builds controlled modules that I personally review and triple review.

So like I said, it depends what you want to outsource, but yes some things are worth it.
