Apologises folks if this is elsewhere but struggled to find a post with the info I'm looking for.

A couple of questions:

1. What article sites would you still say have value in getting your articles published on? I've tried articlesbase.com and ezinemark.com but I'm not sure where these sit in the hierarchy. What others?

2. I'm guessing the best strategy is to get your articles on to a good broad mix of these sites rather than all within the same article/author account?

3. Am I wasting my time? I've gone down this route as I see a couple of articles ranking quite well for longer tail keywords I'm interested in. I guess I've answered my own question, but wondering whether those article links are just historical and less likely to rank these days.

As ever any help much appreciated!

    After publishing your articles on your own site first, and having them indexed there, you must mean?

    The answer is: sites that are specifically and exclusively relevant to your niche.

    Sites where the regularly returning readers/visitors/subscribers are the people you want to attract to your site.

    Please excuse the observation that you've misunderstood what article marketing is, what article directories are designed to do, and how they work. The purpose of submitting your article to places other than those I've described just above is "as a stepping-stone" toward getting them re-published on the ones I've described just above.

    For all the reasons explained in this post, no article marketer would want a potential customer putting one of his articles' keywords into a search engine and finding as a result a copy of the article on someone else's site, rather than on this own. People to whom that happens are the same ones who end up starting threads here with titles like "Article Marketing Doesn't Work Any More". (And for them, it really doesn't).

    Try EzineArticles, this is a very reputable article directory. I'm regularly sending my articles there after posting on my blog.

      You can try Street Articles - Where Writers Become Authors, a relatively new article directory, but search engines are liking it for sure.

        "Duplicate content", in this context, means "multiple copies of the same text file within one website".

        Content "duplicated" across different domains isn't "duplicate content": it's syndicated content.

        The terminology is ridiculous, but I'm afraid we have Google to blame for that: in one place they refer to "content duplicated across domains" but they're not talking about "duplicate content" where they say that - they're actually differentiating it from "duplicate content".

        So, in one sense, you're right: they (directories) search for "duplicate content" (meaning "another copy in their own database") but if they don't find that, there's no problem. Therefore, they won't publish an article of which they themselves already have a copy, but they don't care where else it's been published.

        Fortunately not. Because it isn't duplicate content. It's going to show up as "syndicated content", which isn't a problem at all. Like many article marketers, I have amassed over the last 4 years a huge number of articles in various articles directories, all of which were originally published and indexed on my own sites first.

        Sorry, but this is wrong.

        Street Articles (as discussed and explained in several other threads in this forum) is not an article directory.

        It has entirely different functions and purposes, and you wouldn't want to submit there anything that you'd submit to an article directory. I appreciate that it looks at first glance like an article directory, but actually it isn't.

    You are not wasting your time using Ezinearticles. As long as you follow the rules of writing and posting then you are safe. It is still one of the best directories that can give you the required results.

    Well I believe the BEST site to put your articles on would be YOUR OWN. ;-)

    I mean, why build someone elses site up, might as well build up your own. But that's a different subject I guess.

    The top article directory though would be Ezine Articles. Been this way for years and they are still getting the most traffic when it comes to article directories.

    Completely agree that own site is best place for material, but don't these directories look for duplicate content before approving them? After all if I post content on my site (and presuming it's been indexed by Google etc) then it's going to show up as dupe if I then attempt to repost it (ignoring spinning here) on another site?

      EzineArticles is the only directory I still use. Here's how they handle it...

      They don't care if the article has been published elsewhere, as long as the author names match.

      If I post an article on my site as by "John J. D. Schmidt" and submit it to EZA as by "Benny N. Joon", they'll kick it back because the authors don't match. In their eyes, it creates questions about the true rights owner.

      Any "directory" that requires only unique content not published elsewhere isn't a directory, it's a content farm. Panda was Google's expression of dislike for content farms. And they aren't all that fond of directories, either. Read the links Alexa provided, and you'll see why it should not matter...

    To answer your question, I find Free Articles Directory | Submit Articles - ArticlesBase.com to work quite well, and they are not as restrictive as Ezinearticles is.

    Articles directories are great but I would definitely suggest focusing on your own blog and making more use of your writing skills writing on other people's blogs as well for some additional exposure!

    I speak from experience after writing 1000s of articles in Ezine Articles I came to realize how valuable all the content would be in my own site/sites.
