Allow comments on my blog or not ?

Just wondering is it worth to allow comments on my business blog.
I had it on the different site , but blocked comments because of tons of spam.
I`m running them on joomla.
Any suggestions?

I would suggest using the DISQUS comments system. It seems to receive far less spam and it allows people to "sign in" using a social profile. It's far better than the built in commenting system in my opinion.

      Hi Dave,

Never used DISQUS, will need to try it. And it looks like it improves commenting too.

      Thanks,

      Adam

I absolutely love it. Just discovered it a few months ago on a couple different authority blogs in my market and decided to give it a try.

I have just installed Facebook Comments on my website and love it.

All of the commenters must be logged into Facebook and can create
    more traffic for you.

I agree with Brazosbelle. Allowing facebook comments on your website is an AMAZING way to market your website for free. It's easy for people to leave messages and it promotes your article/product/website to 1000's of other people with no extra work on your end.

    Highly suggest it!

If you are using Wordpress, there is a wonderful plug-in called akismet, it will block all the spam.

  • Smallbusinesstoolkit,

I would definitely allow comments on your blog. As mentioned by another member, try the disqus commenting system. Its great for avoiding spam. Also, if your goal is to drive more traffic to the property, then you will also want to encourage visitor engagement. In my opinion, having to spend a lot of time moderating comments is a good problem to have. This means your content is engaging and that your rankings in SERP’s are only increasing with each comment that is left.

If you are monitoring comments personally and interacting with your viewers then yes.

If you are just looking for some kind of spam filter to do the work for you then no.

Without comments, a blog isn’t really a blog. To me, blogging is not just about publishing content, but also the two-way communication and community building aspects behind it.
A successful blog does not come without its readers, so I feel that the least we can do for them as bloggers is to allow them to have their voice be heard if they choose to speak. In a way, I find it self-righteous and smug to simply post content and disable the ability for people to voice their own opinion, as if to say “my content is good enough as it is and your opinion doesn’t matter.”

DISQUS is a pretty good way to get sensible comments from real people. Even news forums use it. And if you can integrate facebook comments in your blog, it will be an amazing way to generate quality traffic.

Yeah captchas are a great way to prevent spam.
There's core design captcha plugin for joomla.
If you want there are captcha plugin where the one registering or commenting in the forum is required to slide an icon in to a slide bar, just like when unlocking an ipod. It's something not most spammers can really get through. It's easy and effective.

It is unbelievable how many people who visit site, do not visit because site content, and to leave comment related to content , but to advertise their service.

I would definitely add it and then get some kind of anti-spam for comments. Comments are great because visitors have a chance to get involved and invested in your website.

A great benefit is having repeat visitors when someone else makes a new comment and the person that wrote the comment gets an email about the new comment and comes back to visit your site again

Use plugin to help you filter out those spam and ban some IP accordingly will help you to reduce the amount of spam.
The best is open to public to comment is because you need feedback and interaction with readers and customers to serve them better and make your business growth.
