Question about an aged domain name i purchased

I was searching around online and in the forums and couldnt find anything on this. I recently snatched an aged domain name from 2006 and have now put a website on it.

I am curious if anyone knows if i have the rights to the information that was once on the domain name. The website was only live from 2006-2008. I searched online and didnt find any signs of the website being moved to a different domain and cant find information on who owned it. I am not sure if it was copyrighted or not.

Anyways i am thinking about using some of the content on there but not sure if that is ok to do? Anyone have any information on this? I know there is a difference between buying a website and buying a domain, im just wondering if the content is mine now or not?

Hi you bought the domain and not the content that was once on that domain. I would suggest you use unique fresh content on the domain as this will help the site rank in the future

You can use the content from the old domain. I do it all the time, and have never run into problems.

Worst comes to worst, you'll be asked to have it taken down...but the chances of that happening are very slim...

That's part of the value of expired domains (small part for the most part) - is the old content.

BTW, talking ethics, I'm not saying it's legally yours, I'm just saying you'll be fine using it 99.999% of the time.

    Kyle,

You don't want to wait for the time for someone to inform you that you need to take down all those content on your website, do you? Of course, your answer would be a 'yes.'

I would recommend you to be proactive in writing and publishing/posting new content to your website. If that content is really good, and you want to re-write it, I would recommend you NOT to re-write on a sentence level. Keep the core of the story but tell it with different examples.

    klenelson,

I think you've answered your own question above. You bought a domain name not the including content. I'm not a lawyer and don't pretend to play one on the wf, but I would consult with a copyright attorney. My non-legal advice would be you do not have rights to the content, since you did not purchase the site from the original owner.

When ever I've purchased an old domain, I've always just put up fresh content. I feel if the original site was penalized in any way, the SE's would see the domain's content had been changed and could see all the new back links.

    Adam.

Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I think I will end up using the content but probably re-write it. I really like what the content was and its pretty valuable stuff in my eyes. Thats why i was wondering! Thanks

That is a very good point you made "if the SE penalized it in any way" I think i am for sure going to take that into consideration. I think I am just going to re evaluate the content and write it in my own UPDATED words since it is a bit old.
