Suggestions for Getting "Customers" to Site

Hi Everyone!

I would LOVE to get some of your opinions and suggestions. I have a site (newmediahire dot com) that I have had up since the middle of last year so not quite a year yet, which is basically a job board for the new media industry HOWEVER, let me tell you my woes.

1) It seems my Google and Alexa are ok I guess BUT the main money maker on the site are job postings. I just can't seem to keep that flow going. It is one area where there are still several jobs (as I check Monster and Careerbuilder etc.) there tons. My site is more focused and my users get a TON of hits and applicants because it is more targeted with less NOISE. Most of the postings on there I have to use backfill.

2) I am using Twitter (have over 600 followers)
3) I am using LinkedIn (over 1,400 which I have register on the site to get approved) and don't use the discussion portion so the site can be used.

4) I believe I am still on the first page of Google and Yahoo for New Media Jobs and Digital Media jobs.

I think I am using the wrong keywords or something but my same competitors keep poping up so I should be on the same wave length. How can I better target those that are actually POSTING jobs? BTW, the ads that are on there are from CB and have been on for about a month with no sales yet.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have written articles but I have to say that was a while ago. Have not used PPC just yet b/c not sure if that I know the proper keywords that would get me a job posting. Oh boy! I know a lot but I will take any suggestions or if you have questions, please let me know. THANKS A MILLION

I was even thinking of partnering but not even sure what type of partnership would be advantageous to someone else to even make that offer.

How much have you worked on getting back links to your site? That of course is a big part of getting search engine traffic. "Seems" that is a big point your missing.

What other promotion have you done? what about job/employment message boards and forums? Do you frequent them with a good signature?

Are the keywords your using getting searches? Have you verified if people actually use those keywords to search?

Just a few thoughts. Does any of that help?

      Hi Ron,

Great advice! I am not quite sure HOW to find out what exactly people are searching. That is my problem. Are there any tools or a process to find that out? I am stuck. I will try message boards and other forums. The problem is that I haven't been able to find any specific ones that would target my site's niche. Usually they don't let other job board folk post or promote.

Using the right keywords is so important. You could rank high for something, but if no one uses the keywords you rank for, you get no traffic.

One of the best tools is from Google and it's free. You just need to have a Adwords account http://adwords.google.com, which is free. Once signed up, you just go to "Tools", then to "Keyword Tool". Type in your keyword(s), click the "Get Keywords Ideas" button and it will show you how many searches there are for that keyword, plus it lists related and similar keywords or combination and their searches. Great tool.

        Hope that helps?

You could also write, how to get a job, or employment articles and submit them to article directories, with the proper anchor text in your bio box links, if anything it will build backlinks that will help you rank better.

    Hi NMH:

Hope all is well. Have you tried to use video marketing (free services)? You can upload for example to You Tube and thirty or so other sites about your product and why the job postings are a great value. Entice the viewer with something ethical and special to visit and spread the word.

Don't stop at Twitter. Did you search on Google for other social sites such as My Space, Facebook, and so on? Did you attempt a free ad on Craig's List and Backpage dot com? Have you been using a blog yours and other contacts to get the word out?

    Hope these help. Good luck.

      Craig,

Good idea! I will try Craig's and Backpage. That will get candidates but not sure about those who post jobs but something is better than nothing. I will try some of the other social sites. FaceBook I did try but didn't get a great response.

Stop and think a minute, here...

Who posts job openings on employment sites?

People with open jobs to fill -->

    > Human Resource people
    > Executive and professional recruiters
    > Ad agencies (especially for your "new media" niche)
    > Publishing houses (print, electronic and online)
    > ???

Figure out who has jobs to post, and look for places they hang out...

    > Forums
    > Professional associations
    > Trade magazines (print and digital)
    > Trade groups

Niche your prospect pool the same way you did your service. Who is using your service now? What business or trade are they in? How can you communicate with more people like them?

There's a whole big world out there beyond keyword research and PPC and Alexa rankings. And it's full of groups of people who could use your service. Your job is to find them, figure out what they want (in detail), and show them how you can deliver it or make it happen.
