My first attempt at a blog.

by Luisc137 18 replies
So I'm actually quite excited and pleased at my first attempt to create a blog. I know I still have quite some work to do like getting a real domain, driving traffic to my site, and actually making some money but for a person who just started in the IM business like a week ago, I think I'm off to a good start.

Enough about me being excited! I want to see some opinions. If you have a chance take a peek and see what you think. Feel free to post some comments of any advice you may have.

Nice start. But in order for this to work you should
register your own domain name and setup a blog on
your own paid hosting. This way you can place ads
and/or other monetization methods without the risk
of being banned by the blog network.

How do you go about doing this?

        Well..

1)Get a domain at namecheap.com or some other registrars..
2)Get a hosting account. I use hostgator.com.. (reliable for me)
You can use other hosting company as well.
3)Installed a free blog script like wordpress.. get it at wordpress.org.

That's what you need to do..

If you need a further details on setting up everything,
maybe you can get detailed course on this..
        I recommemend Alvin Phang's atomicblogging.com..

        Good luck..

Great start! And in a week!

Just a matter of moving to the next level as quickly as you feel able. That's what I found, everytime I worked out how to do something and put it into action, I'd learn something new. I'd then put the new into action and it would show up the old something chronic. Keep moving forward and you'll be amazed at what you can do!

Good luck, loads of info and helpful people here to keep pushing you!

Well, it's a great start. I would also suggest you go for
your own domain and paid hosting, but it's not necessary
if you are on a budget.

Now, you should gradually add more quality content and
build links to your blog by submitting related articles.

All the best with your blog.

Hey, you did a really nice job! Your site is attractive, and you found a related product to promote.

Are you planning to build a blog for each of the "other easy to start businesses"? You could then cross-link them to each other to increase your traffic.

Also, you could build similar blogs on Squidoo (it's also free). There are more monetizing options there if you want them. You could also link between blogspot and Squidoo for more traffic.

Another good thing about learning how to build a Squidoo site (it's actually called a "lens") is that there are people who have businesses building and selling Squidoo sites. So if you discover that you really like building "lenses", it's another way to make some money on the web.

              Keep up the good work!

    Great start.

Now you need to create regular top content and learn to drive traffic.

Once you get that going, you will start to see options to make money

The hardest part actually is promotion so I suggest you to focus more on content and seo...

Thanks for all the replies and advice everyone.

I know I should probably get my own domain, besides namecheap.com for a name and hostgator.com for hosting, are there any others worth mentioning?

What other things can I add to the blog to make it look more appealing or attractive?

EDIT: Also, whats a good way of keeping track of how many visitors I get on my blog?

I have tried different places and I ended going with namecheap and hostgator. They are a good combination together for making sites quickly and easily.

If you get a hostgator account, you can track your traffic stats. with Awstats but if you want to use the free blog and just want a counter, you can use StatCounter Free invisible Web tracker, Hit counter and Web stats

Wordpress has a ton of free themes that you can customize if you want a more flashy theme. I actually like yours, it's goes well with what your site is about.

There are lots of others besides Namecheap and Hostgator. But those are the ones I use, too.

I like Namecheap because it's really easy to navigate. There's another big-name domain vendor that I use (rhymes with no-faddy), but never recommend because the interface is so gunked up with add-on options (for additional fees, of course) that I ended up checking out with options I didn't plan on.

Also, google "discount codes for namecheap" and you can usually find a monthly code to use that will give you about a dollar off of your purchase.

Hostgator, I really love because of their great tech support. I've called many times, and at wierd hours. No matter who answers the phone, they answer questions until I'm clear about what I'm doing. It's like getting private tutoring!

I'm sure there are other really good ones. You can call their tech support first to see if you like dealing with them. I did that with Hostgator, and that's what sold me.

Ok. So I checked out Namecheap and I'm pretty much sold on it so thanks to everyone who suggested it.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I can spice my page up a bit and make it more attractive to readers. Anyone can drive traffic to their site but I'd like to create an effect that will make the visitors actually stay and browse the blog.

If you still need help, just go to youtube to review a video on how to host a wordpress site. youtube has been a tremendous help for me. Also, if you call hostgator (and get a good rep) they will help you with everything. It's really quite simple, once you get the hang of it.

You definitely want you blog hosted with your own url so you can add money makers... and get paid!

              Best of luck to you.

Good for you.. as namecheap & hostgator is one of
the favorites used by many people..

For one to spice up your blog, you need to customize
some area in the blog like the the header as mentioned
              by a warrior earlier..

Put your best looking picture on your blog so that people
know you are human afterall.. Create a about you page
for people to check you out.. People buy people.. not
              products..

if can put something entertaining like videos, audios or polls
which is related to your niche..

Try to open up your paragraph to 3 or 4 line per/paragraph..
It will be easier to read for your visitors..

Put pictures that related to your niche..

Update regularly.. Content is King as mentioned earlier as well by
a warrior.. just make sure your content is SEOly produced so that
you can get organic traffic from search engines..

I recommend you use Jason Potash's Content Composer at
contentcomposer.com as this unique tool can do wonders to
SEO articles in your blog.. It is not free though & a bit expensive..
But it is an investment that help you in a long run..

So what else? I can't think of any right now..
              Good Luck..

    Hello Luis,

Your site is fine however you may want to give a
custom look by having a header designed for you.
You could also find a free header graphic and add
    your own text to it.

I use Cheapies for most of my domains, dot coms
    cost $6.95 per year.

You can use Adsense on blogspot. I have three blocks on mine. You've made a great start! I would definitely go with your own domain though. Buy your domain one place and host it at another. Don't put all your things in one place.
