On "Taking Massive Action"

I had a massive rant prepared regarding the people who throw out titular phrase as if it's gospel; but I guess I'm not up to completing a "big" thread if it's not lighthearted/funny. So instead, there's this.

Newbies and struggling marketers: if you are really intent on following this advice and just doing whatever task comes to mind in the hopes of making money, then the least you can do is not run into the battle naked.

You need to track and test every single action that you take. If you're not recording an action, and observing it against a goal/prediction, then there is no way to know if what you are doing is actually helping your business. That's how you burn out, become a failure, and spend the rest of your life complaining about how IM doesn't work.

So how do you measure your actions and decide what gets thrown out and what gets optimized? You know the answer, and won't have to spend a penny to get the information right back in front of your eyes. Take a nostalgic trip back to the 4th grade and behold the scientific method:

Scientific method - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That's right: it's not just for figuring out whether or not pee is safe to drink (I sh*t you not, this was one student's experiment in 8th grade). Everything that you do online is an experiment, whether you realize it or not. Will that new headline work? Is forum posting bringing you money? Does Article Syndication/YouTube/SEO/Magic Pixie Dust work? You don't have to guess, and you don't have to hope that someone else is giving you good information!

If this seems like too much work for you, then you shouldn't be in this business in the first place. Harsh, yes; but it's better than sending you off blind to fail and reach the same conclusion.

Well, what are you waiting for? Go "take massive action". At least you're a little bit better equipped for it now. And those of you giving advice? Either be a bit more complete with what you say (feel free to link them to the scientific method like I did), or shut up.

I think that's one of the reasons that people have the mindset that there really isn't such thing as "failure" in Internet Marketing - there's just data that you acquire and the decisions you make based off that data.

The real "failure" is when you're not collecting data or when you're seeing the data but making poor decisions.

Great objective look at an expression that is tossed around a lot.

Very true sir, there are two Internet marketing myths that I particularly disagree with and cringe whenever marketers wave their flag:

Rinse and Repeat: Since all things are finite, rinse and repeat doesn't work 50% of the time. (And there are more variables that dictate success than people realize)

Take Massive Action!: If you've studied mechanics physics or engineering, you know about mechanical advantage. Same thing applies to marketing. Taking wise "leveraged" action is far more important than taking just any action.

Rinse and repeat is definitely another one that gets thrown around a lot. The advice tends to leave out the "optimize the successful action" part of the equation.

I wrote a post yesterday about building a solid foundation and the next stage is exactly as you described.

As long as you have a good base you can begin to test stuff and see what works.

And this is the crux of the matter. Tracking, testing, and recording the actions you take is essential for knowing not only what works, but more importantly how it works.

And fast behind that pearl of wisdom is folk who leap on the speeding IM wagon expecting to be taken straight to the promised land. They wholeheartedly believe that buying an eyecatching WSO or downloading some massively hyped and grossly overstated ebook is their passport to riches.

IM is a business, just like any other. And you know the most important factor to consider is that the majority of people just can't cut it to run any kind of business, yet oddly, in IM they think they can. I mean, if you were a grocer and visited your local wholesaler to stock up, and spotted a poster there advertising baked beans on offer . . . would you fill up your entire shop just with beans? No, I don't think so. Why then expect the same from IM. Don't put all your eggs in one basket hoping it will work.

Track, test, and record every action as the OP says, and watch, listen, and learn at the same time.

Best advice of the night. Even though most won't take a blind bit of notice.

There's plenty in IM who haven't evolved though
