What domain extension should I use

I am building a site around an american product and have the .com and .us domain names available. In your opinion which should I go for and why?

Thanks

Kim

Stick to .com even if that means adding a word or something to the emd. Worst case scenario, go for .net or .org. Stay clear off the rest. If possible consider .co after .com but before the other two.

I would personally always go for either the .com or the .net extension even though you're selling an american product. Who knows, you might get customers from Europe that will get scared of by the .us extension.

I just find .com to be your best choice, but that's just my opinion.

From point of view of seo and ranking:
    .co and .com are equal
.net and .org aren't as good
    Rest are worse

Out of those two, it's clear: the .com.

Because as a UK resident, you're almost certainly not eligible/allowed to register the .us domain-name (not that I'd touch it anyway, myself), unless you have a US-company or partly live there, or something.

When I'm registering domain-names for my own business (rather than for resale), I always try to buy the .com and the .info, myself.

(You've checked that the name you want doesn't include anyone else's trademark, of course?).

But whatever else you decide to buy/register/use, don't fail to register the .com, if it's available!

Go with .com, it will show in all other countries. And with .us domain extension it's hard to get some traffic from other countries.

Thanks very much for the replies, I had not seen the .us domain extensions before so was not sure whether they would be better or not. The responses here have definitely made my mind up to go for the .com.

      Thanks again

      Regards

    I agree with Alexa

Even if it is allowed for you to own .us I wouldn't go for it.

Now that I think of it, I never bought anything from a website that ended in any domain other than .com

even if it .net I would probably bother spending much more time looking into it.

I would aggree with others above .com is the way to go; just in addition .com gives the perception of being a 'serious website'. The way to go if your lucky enough for it to be available.

What do people feel about .co? It is a new domain and supposedly the same dps each value as .com.

There are plenty of threads about it. It's not that new.

It is the same, for all SEO/ranking purposes, as any top-level domain. Google has stated this publicly. It's one of three previously geo-specific domain extensions which have effectively been "upgraded" to international status by Google - the other two are .me (previously specific to Montenegro) and .tv (previously specific to Tuvalu).

They're just not .com's, this is the problem. So you lose some type-in traffic to the owner of the .com. And resale value is far lower. And they're not cheap, either. There's not much wrong with them if those things don't matter to you. I wouldn't really want one, myself. (I like domain-names but I could never eat a whole one).

.com is FAR better than .us domains, even if you are targetting US. .us domains do not hold the same weight that some other regional extensions have such as .co.uk, or not .de...

I would also vote for .com
For me it is not really because of SEO, but it looks more authoritative and professional. But it is my opinion.

I suggest putting the site on a .com and then buying all the other extensions, as many as you can, and point them all to the .com. Otherwise, you risk the chance of someone buying them up and them piggybacking all of your hard work.

As everyone else has chimed in .com over .us Also .org has been proven to be the next high ranking tld extension after .com for ranking value.

The problem with any URL that is not .com is that it is not .com

If people just remember the first part of the URL, they will assume its a .com. If the URL is anything else, then they MUST remember the whole URL including the TLD. There are very few URLs that are so memorable that people will automatically remember the whole URL.

The .com will be more valuable simply because people still expect the .com. As far as SEO goes, I've always seen that I can rank any domain with any extension.

Go with ".com". But it really doesn't matter which extension you go with if you're not driving targeted traffic to the site and getting sales. So this should be your main focus.

Stay away from the .info domain suffix. Almost impossible to rank for.

If you don't care about the branding of your domain name, you can do VERY WELL with ranking .info's

I recommend you to stick with .com only if you want you can create a press release blog/site related to your topic with .us extension which will increases your local search results.

If your customers are US based, its better to go with .us. But if it doesn't it always best to go with evergreen .com.

Stick to .com (if you can find one)
If you're unlucky, satisfy yourself with .net only as there are a lot of famous blogs with such a domain extension like Problogger

    I would suggest .com

sometimes its cool to have .net domain as well in my opinion the next .com

especially because You can still grab some catchy 4 letter domain names like I did with my SRIX.NET

Dot Com FTW! This is the most popular domain extension right now and quite effective for your website or blog to rank, while others are just secondary. But if your EMD is not available on this domain extension, go for NET or ORG.

Or maybe, add a single letter or number to your EMD and register it with Dot Com!
