Domain Flipping Still Alive !

I just wanted to share with everyone that domain flipping is still a viable way to make money online. I know several warriors who do it or have done it...
Rob Thayer, Gene Pimentel, VioFX, and a few others ...
If you haven't heard of it it's basically registering a domain name at $8(what I do ) or purchasing it in an after market such as godaddy auctions and others and reselling it at a higher price that another company would value it at .

Like I might not care to own yogamats.com but someone selling yoga mats would find it useful for a variety of reasons :
-Branding (use in offline ads or elsewhere)
-SEO ( use online to rank high for those terms)

Owning the exact keywords help in SEO and even if you don't agree they do... There's just something special about owning the keyword .com of what you sell as a business!

For example I sold Mobile Sales Software. Com for $2k!
I sold it to a company who sells mobile sales software.

Sold social recruiting software dot com for $1k .

Sold a few smaller $$$ domains( think $100-$500) in the last few weeks.

And the best part is I bought each domain for just $8 from godaddy...

Now I do have a knack for domains but you could each find your own path . Even if its not in domains !

I left domains a year ago but came back because its made the most money for me. It may not for you so you have to experiment and learn.

I read a lot about domains and picked up a skill for finding good domains .

Check out donainsherpa.com morganlinton.com and namepros.com for resources

If you have any questions about domain flipping please reply to this thread or even better shoot me an email as I get it pushed to me automatically on my new iPhone 5 .

Anyone else flip domains ??

Thanks, Mike. Your post is really inspiring.

I've thought about it, and have some domains I'd like to flip, but I haven't quite figured out how to handle the logistics.

Will finish watching the Gene P. webinar in the morning and hopefully get some answers...

Also should reread all the domain flipping stuff I have on my hard drive

I have this passion for domain name but I am still confused as to how to skillfully pick a domain name that will sell. How do you know that a particular domain name will sell? Where on Godaddy do get such domain names. I have heard of Godaddy aftermarket or so, but how do ou guy really do it? Where do you sell?

Do you actually buy the domains on spec and then sell them to the businesses? This makes sense, as otherwise they could just do it themselves (assuming they know how). But it also means you have to invest money up front. I tried this a couple of times and just ended up with domains I could neither sell nor use myself.

In my opinion domain flipping will live as long as there are domain names.

Especially if You know whats coming around the corner and purchase some good domains in that niche.

There is still good money in this Market...

The safest option is to build up a good traffic source for that URL and then sell it for more !

Options are limitless as long as you know what you are doing.

I'm so glad to see your post.

I experienced the absolute easiest proactive sale online ever with the sell of 2 domain names last month. Never monetized them before hand...Well I did try with adsense but it was miserable results. I may have made a total of $3 in Adsense income on each domain in the last 30 days I owned both sites.

I was about to actually let those 2 names expire with just 2 weeks until their expiration, I worked up the nerve to actually send an email to a baby product company executive who I thought would be a good fit for the domain names.

Sent the executive an email on a Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon when I checked my email to my surprise read a simple response of "how much". I never even talked to the guy on the phone which I found to be quite interesting.

Sold both for $600 went thru Escrow.com without a hitch. Whole transaction took 7 days due to slight hold up with my registrar.

    Simplest money ever.

To say I'm hooked is an understatement

Good domains and congrats on the sales! It's always nice to hear of more people having success with domains. My partner and I have been involved in selling domains for many years from what I've witnessed, while the economy tanking in 2008 started affecting the domain market, folks who truly understood good domains from bad and who moved with the market had little trouble.

The key really starts with getting objectively good domains that are sellable, ideally sellable to an entrepreneur or business that could build a good site on it. Most people go wrong in one of four ways:

    - They never figure out what separates good domains from bad and only end up with bad domains.
    - They focus only on brandable domains, which can be much harder to sell and much harder to evaluate objectively (you think it's good but would a potential buyer?)
    - They get domains that realistically aren't developable or aren't in an area where someone would pay more for the domain. The search numbers might be good but it's just not a sellable domain.
    - They get domains that mass developers/SEOs might want but market them only to end-users or vice versa. They are two different markets and don't intersect very much.

I think there's still immense opportunity to enter this space, but you can't expect to get lucky or understand good domains from bad ones without educating yourself. There's a lot more to it than that as well which many new domain resellers don't realize - where to sell, how to negotiate, smoothly dealing with transfers, what to do with the domains, etc.

    Hey Mike!

I have a friend who just "inherited" many hundreds of domain names. He has no idea where to start.

    Most are parked at ENOM.

They are all local niche names... Stuff kinda like SanJose Homes for Sale . Com, or Cupertino Dental Office. com, or LasVegas Bankruptcy Attorney. com, etc... Any tips on a system or a method, or resources to resell a very big inventory of domain names at a low cost?

He needs a proven domain marketing system with low overhead, with so many domains to sell. The renewals will be expensive — unless he can sell at least a few per month, he won't break even.

With Googles latest Algorithim update , exact match domains no longer hold an advantage as far as ranking your website is concerned . Many have already experienced a huge drop in their rankings . Google is not penalising exact match domains as such just the low quality ones [ So they say] .

Suspect many who didnt really work their sites but ranked and have now fallen in the rankings might let their domains expire .

I agree however that domain flipping will be with us as long as domains exist . A good way to earn an income but like anything else it takes work and effort .

I believe you take the monthly income and times it by 12 (one year) to get a general or baseline value. I'm still learning of course, but I think that is a Fladlien standard.

Now what I'm trying to figure out is how much traffic does a site get. Besides goog keyword tool are there others to check this with?

Visit seodigger.com and place the url without the "http://www" and without the trailing"/" at the end of the url. Doing this should give you an idea at least of that particular domains higher performing keywords. You can see up to 10 keyword results free, however if you want to view more, there's a membership fee.

I think its getting much worse for flippers because the amount of good and available .coms is declining rapidly.

Plus those in the US primarily focus on .com tld.

Now companies are starting to go for these web 2.0 type of names for branding: ooVoo, Weebly, Joomla, etc...

Good luck preemptively buying those... they all sound equally ridiculous, and none of them mean anything (or if they do its nothing that will stand out to a consumer), but they give much stronger branding than Yoga Mats.
