What Is Stopping You From Building Your List?

Hey everyone,

I have termed my year for 2009 "The Year Of The List"

This is an aspect of my business that I have neglected shamefully, and I am FOCUSED on rectifying that this year.

Usually, when I procrastinate on something, it's because there are obstacles in the way of accomplishing the task (DUH, right?)...

So here are my obstacles.

1.) Where do I find people to get on my list?
2.) What do I give them to get them on my list?
3.) What do I do with them after they're on my list?

So, what stops YOU from building YOUR list?

-Marcus

Nothing is stopping me now, however i never used to know how important the "LIST" was to my online ventures. I used to chase every next big thing expecting miracles . I wasted about a year ,hour after hour until i finally listened to a friend of mine who kept telling me to build a highly targeted responsive list. I'm due him a good few beers .

If i can help in your quest of building your list let me know.

    Best wishes

    Mine are similar:
    1. Finding...narrowing down a good niche. One where there are people looking for and spending money on things.
    2. What to give them? Well, I always hear, "Give them really great stuff...your best stuff." That's my problem...if I keep giving them all of my best stuff, I'll have nothing left for the e-book or whatever my end product is. That is the problem of what to give them to join the list and what to "sell" them later.
    3. Getting traffic to an Opt-In page that is unranked in Google (at least initially) in a fairly competitive market. I don't want to spend a fortune in PPC to get a list.

(go where they hangout. Provide useful info and they will want to learn more from you -- and join your list.)
2.) What do I give them to get them on my list?
(Give them a free report, not garbage either. Something that has good amounts of information, make sure to not skimp on the ebook cover. An ugly ebook cover will make your business look bad)
3.) What do I do with them after they're on my list?
(Offer your products to your list. Do Jvs, become an affiliate on clickbank. List goes on and on.)

You start with 1 niche, get everything done ( squeeze page, autoresponder series, front end/back end sales/promotions). Then you can go to a new niche and repeat the process, it gets much easier eventually.

Brilliant advice, far too many people go chasing too many money makers at once. Get one Niche in profit then compound your business over and over.

I am also debating with myself to start with a niche that i have some interest in....which boils down to 2 topics..retail management(not exactly a good topic due to economic crisis) and IM(while i do know lots of stuff,i'm no expert).
I was considering something in health niche.
I guess this is something i'll have to figure out. I'm worried that i'll lose interest in whatever niche i choose.

    Hey Marcus,

as you mentioned in your post, the thing that was
stopping you is YOU. Therefore, nothing else is stopping
everyone else from building their lists but themselves.

Can't underscore how important this point is. Especially in the IM niche, I can't tell you how many lists I've unsubscribed from because the big name gurus kept spamming me to death with their affiliate links, and rarely if ever provided me with anything of value.

Well - the real issue is getting people on the list in
a context that makes them likely to view you as a
friendly, welcome presence in their inbox instead of
    an annoyance.

You can build a list faster if all you want is names on
it - there are literally millions of people who live in
poverty who are looking for freebies, especially ways
to make money online. Many have no bank accounts
and struggle with English - so while they are eager to
subscribe their lifetime customer value is pretty darn
    low.

I don't write this to be mean or discriminatory - I got an
email the other day from one of my subscribers reading
"no spech english" from which I infer that the guy
has no idea what my stuff is about and has no clue
why he subscribed the first place.

So - let's qualify the list-building thing and say we want
subscribers who can understand our communication
efforts and have the basic ability to spend money
    online.

I've been building lists for a few years - but I coach people
and I know for a fact that a lot of people will sit around
for months or years researching and trying things out and
not spend $20 a month for a good autoresponder. That's
likely not a problem with anybody here - but in the niche
of people who want to "make money" it's actually a pretty
big factor that keeps people from getting anywhere -
    not getting started, basically.

Now the other factor is the CARROT or goodie you offer in
exchange for the signup. Free crap is so abundant these
days it's actually a little tricky because most people
won't even read your ebook or whatever - even if it's
really good we must realize that most of our material
just doesn't get any kind of focused attention from
subscribers - so the process of winning them over is
not done in the free ebook or video course, but over the
course of time in email and drip-fed content.

These days I think it is best to offer something of
high perceived value - and ironically you really need to
go to WORK with your copy and salesmanship to get
people to even accept your free Goodie -

... pay attention here, because this is relevant and
if you don't consider it carefully you could be really
    shooting yourself in the foot:

Today the issue is selling prospects on entering into
your lead-funnel at all - not selling your products -
    just getting their permission.

And it will get more competitive to get that permission
from enough people to build a responsive list fast enough
to succeed in the marketplace of tomorrow.

Building a profitable opt-in list Won't just happen overnight. There are many preparations and effort to do. Opt-in lists are built from scratch, as your list grows, you should also maintain the quality of your list.

Keep it organized and manageable. Get help if need be, just make sure that your subscribers are happy and satisfied and they will be willing to buy from you.

For me it is important to give them something valuable as thankyou for signing up to my mailing list. I wrote a guide on good adsense placement for people who sign up to my list and it certainly works in getting the sign ups.

I also feel it is important not to bombard your subscribers with offer after offer like some marketers do. When I make a post to my subscribers it will contain something useful whether it be just information or sometimes if it's a product that I truly believe in. I think overall it is harder to keep your subscribers interested in what you are writing than it is to get them to sign up.

The list building can seem quite scary but really once you have a few angles it all starts to gel together.
A good tip for securing that subscriber is: Use the P.S to its full extenet.
Too many people slip up and miss a great selling chance.
Think about it by the time someone gets to your P.S they have already made an opinion on your product/site......... Use this last chance to hit them with a new point about the item your email is talking about. This is your last chance to secure the subscription on this email.

Whatever niche you choose should be one where you can keep offering content over time. If it's a very narrow niche with not much happening in it, you're pretty much boxed in about what kind of content you can supply them. So factor in the longevity of your niche, so that you can continue to build relationships with them over time and provide value all along the way, along with great offers for niche-related products and services your niche craves.

It's funny - when I help people turn their online businesses into list-building businesses, the obstacles tend to be...

      1. I tried that once, but nobody bought from me so now I just throw all my traffic at my sales site -- OR

      2. I put up an ecourse or video, but nobody is signing up -- OR

      3. What do I do when they are on my list? -- OR

      4. How can I get traffic to my list-building funnel...

What's really interesting (and something I too found out the hard way) is that to be most effective building a list and monetizing that list you need to have a clear picture of the market you will serve and the VALUE that you intend to bring to that market.

With this comes your identity - you are the one that will finally offer weight loss advice that someone can stick to for more than 10 days or you will offer the most advanced guitar training program for elite guitar players...etc...

Once you have a picture of your typical customer and you know what you intend to provide them (even if you don't have the ideal product yet), it becomes much easier to get through them on your sales page, target them with traffic generation techniques, come up with a highly valued giveaway that really hits the mark and walk them through a follow-up sequence that bonds them to you and has them eating out of the palm of your hand.

The challenge with most list building campaigns is that someone throws up an opt-in form with an incentive that doesn't optimally appeal to your traffic, only attracts a trickle of traffic and then jump all over or bore their subscribers when they finally do get them to signup.

It takes some work to setup a well-oiled list building process, but when it gets humming there is nothing sweeter!

The best way I have found to build a list is offer something for free via video's on you tube. That way you are branding yourself before the person even gets a email follow up from you and when they do if they have watched video's of you they are more likely to join your business or buy your products. I offer free training on my videos and it works for me. Give it a try.

My list is cool.. BUT.. I get confused with how to manage my beloved subscribers..

I would love someone who uses GR for all their email marketing to show me how to get around the obstacles.

In fact surrently I've put on hold my new offer to my list because I don't know how to make it work..

It seems that maybe with GR I won't be able to do this, but then again, there is bound to be a way to do what I want to do.. bound to be.

Well the first question is the hardest? Where do I find people. As with everything quality takes time. To get a quality list you have to offer quality. You can use social networking, articles, affiliates, jv partners etc. to get the list.

You have to offer them something they want in order to get them on your list. Free quality stuff works best.

You then need to mix offers with valuable content. You can't just send them offers and expect them to stay on your list. You also can't just send them free stuff all of the time because you'll be training them to expect that.

Nothing is stopping me from building my lists, but I think some people tend to complicate it. Preparing an irresistible offer for people hungry for it and getting it in front of them is all it takes. For those who may have been asking where do I find them? That's not a dead-end, but it's a clue to guide you on your research.

While you're doing that research, you'll also find additional info on more ways
to sweeten your offer and so forth. Since you asked for info regarding how to
make your offer more 'quality', the more congruent you can make it, the more
you solve the pains and problems while satisfying the desires, the more irresistible
your offer becomes and the more responsive people are to it.

Edit:Again, you can identify what those pains, problems, desires, 'hot-buttons' are for
creating the most irrestible offers by doing research on your market. They'll tell you
if you listen. For instance, there seems to be quite a demand currently for people
wanting to build their own lists.
