....hate to sound like a total noob....but when you create 2.0 sites on wordpress or tumblr or wherever....is the point just to link them to your main site? Do you ever update them...or link and leave?

This is a question more fitted in the SEO forum .. but anyway, here's my answer. There are two schools of thought.

    1) People who post crappy articles that have been spinned a thousand times and make little to no sense... but hey a backlink is a backlink (used to be true before the penguin update)

    2) People who actually enjoy creating something of worth. So they engage in the social actions provided by the site, update the web 2.0 with meaningful content, care about what they post and once in a while they suggest an outside resource.

Now, I'm really a 2) guy. Doing things the way they are supposed to increase the page rank AND the traffic to your site, but not everyone is willing to do all that heavy lifting.

There are many ways to get traffic to web 2.0 sites, you can apply any methods you are using to your regular sites.

So you create 2.0 sites which are basically real sites...but those sites link to your 'money site'?

These are useful sites so if anyone create account it is needed to update and promote the page. If anyone will not work for the account then there will not be much benefit of that page.

They don't often bring traffic by themselves, not unless they rank highly. It's much better to put a link to your money site and improve your SERPs with them.

In my case I treat them as a legitimate sites. I see to it that my web 2.0 blogs or sites provide values to visitors.

At the same time I used to promote some of my affiliate links or get some back links. I usually use them to build mini sites and seo back bones.

But getting back link from is always is the last in my list of their use.

I love web 2.0 sites because they are easier to get traffic than new website using new domain.

Do not add your link when you started your first page. You may keep update for two weeks, then add your link.
