Idiot (Me) Guide To Google Reader! Help!

I have spent ALL day trying to get GR up and running. Can somebody tell me how to open it. I've registered and got the subscribe button on my toolbar but don't know how to open the actual Reader screen. Where is it? All the advice posts assume that I have it running and just want to tweak it.
I have tried to subscribe some of my bookmarks but can't find any RSS feeds on the sites. Is this because a lot of them don't have RSS? Or just I don't know where to look?

    GR reader is a service like Google mail or analytics...
    it's online and part of your Google account....

    Search on the page for "subscribe" or "rss." Or look for the RSS icon.

    If that doesn't work, install the Chrome extension called RSS Subscription Extension (by Google). It displays a little RSS feed icon even on blogs that don't offer RSS subscribe options.
