Determining the quality of PLR content

One of the arguments that I've heard by those against the use of PLR content, is that PLR content is low quality content. On the other side, some users of PLR content would argue that you can find high quality PLR content.

So, here's the question, does high quality content even exist and what exactly determines whether a piece of PLR content is high quality or not?

Is all PLR content low quality?
I think that it's incorrect to say that all PLR content is of low quality. A PLR license doesn't affect the quality of the actual content.

A piece of PLR content is content that just happens to have a PLR license attached to it. If a piece of content is poorly written, then it would be considered low quality, regardless of whether it has a PLR license or not.

Grouping all PLR content together and saying that all PLR content is low quality, is like saying that each and every writer of PLR content purposefully chose to write a low quality piece of content because it was going to be PLR content... which is not true.

The quality depends on the writer... not the license. If the content is poorly written, then it would be poorly written, whether it was PLR content or ghost written content. So, since the quality depends on the writer, it is possible to find high quality PLR content.

What determines quality?
Okay, so if it is possible to find high quality PLR content... what actually determines the quality? How do you know when you've found high quality PLR content?

Well, the quality of the content should be based on the content itself. So, in order to determine whether a piece of PLR content is high quality or not, ask yourself what makes a good piece of content.

Now, the answer would vary from person to person... but is there some common point to focus on? Well, I suppose the obvious thing would be, whether it was worth reading. Content is meant to be read. So, the content has to be appealing to the targeted reader.

In Context
When determining the quality of the PLR content, you have to take into account the perspective of the targeted reader. Remember, the content is pre-written, so when it was written, it was written to target a particular reader. So, you have to be realist when it comes to your expectations of PLR content.

For example, a reader who is looking to read a detailed article, may consider a short entertaining article to be somewhat lacking. But, to someone looking for something entertaining to read and not particularly interested in learning something, would consider that same article, great.

So, when determining the quality of the content, take into account who the content is intended for. If you don't factor this in, you may end up thinking a piece of content is low quality, when in fact, it was never intended to live up to those standards.

Okay, I don't think I explained that point to clearly, so I'll use this random example... which hopefully makes the point clearer. A spoon makes is a terrible fork... but is a brilliant spoon. You wouldn't buy a spoon to be a fork. A spoon was never intended to be a fork... so it shouldn't be surprising that the spoon was a terrible fork.

Just because the content doesn't meet your expectations, doesn't mean that the content was low quality. I think that a lot of times people may think that PLR content is quality, not because it was poorly written, but rather because it didn't meet their expectations.

Unlike ghost written work where you can dictate exactly what you expect in the content, PLR content is pre-written. So, it is important to be realistic about your expectations when it comes to PLR content.

If you can't find PLR content that meets your requirements... then it doesn't necessarily mean the content you've seen up until that point, is low quality... it just means that PLR content may not be the solution to you needs. PLR content is not for everyone.

High Quality Content
So, determining whether content is high quality or low quality is highly subjective. But, are there certain things that you would expect to see in a high quality piece of content?

If content is well written, informative and/or entertaining and free of spelling mistakes... then I suppose that could be considered high quality. Basically, would the targeted reader enjoy reading the content.

What about other Factors?
There are other factors which increases the usefulness of the PLR content as PLR content as well as make the overall PLR package more appealing.

For example, if I'm looking for PLR content to use as web content, buying PLR content where the quantity of that PLR content sold, is limited, is more useful to me. Therefore I'd place more value on it, but it doesn't actually impact the quality of the content.

Or, what if the PLR content package included a list of recommended keywords or affiliate programs. Well, having that info may save you some time... but it hasn't affected the quality of the PLR content... it just makes the overall package more appealing.

Sure, there are other factors to consider when determining the overall value or worth of the PLR content. But, when deciding the quality of PLR content as content, I think that the primarily focus should be on the content itself.

Questions
So, what are your thoughts on determining the quality of PLR content? What do you look for in PLR content? Have you bought PLR content where you have been incredibly satisfied with or impressed by the quality of the PLR content?

If you're worried about the quality then buy PLR that comes with a guarantee.

Plus the definition of good depends on the buyer. I've sold PLR that people love and others accused of being trashy because it was written in a conversational tone and not proper English.

Second, if you're a procrastinator I think it's always quicker and easier to work with something and improve it than it is to start from scratch. Essentially you're buying your first draft. That can be a huge time saver.

Assume that PLR is low quality until you see proof otherwise. Buy PLR from people who have samples that you can read. And if someone is open about who their are and have an active Facebook and Twitter presence, they'll be less likely to sell you crap because they have a reputation to control.

I've bought some awesome plr and I just tweak it a little and it sounds like me. As Big Al says, it's like buying a first draft. I've also bought some dreadfully written articles that could only be used with a complete rewrite and I may as well have started from scratch.

I figure it doesn't cost much to try out a plr provider and if it's not good, then I don't buy any more.

The packages I sell are all high quality, BUT it depends on what you consider high quality, because some people want only limited copy distribution plr and consider everything else low quality; while others simply want the plr to have little or no spelling and grammar errors; others want high page count; others want squeeze page and/or sales page included, and so on.

It's an individual judgement call, depending on your planned use of the plr.
