Getting Over Hostgator

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a drop off in Hostgator's levels of service? They used to be one of the best, but lately I've become disenchanted enough to consider moving to another host.

The last time I asked why my sites were down they took a good 3 hours to respond. Now they have just disabled one of my sites due to "server overload" They gave me a lot of geek speak as to why this was so, most of which I didn't understand.

Can anyone recommend a good hosting platform please?

Many thanks
Wendy

I have all my sites on Hostgator at the moment and am very happy with them. If I do have questions I find their live chat useful and always get any issues ironed out in a timely manner (the I've encountered have been to do with my own lack of technical know how unfortunately).

If you're looking for an alternative though I was with Bluehost before and found them to be good.

I've actually had a lot of issues over the last few weeks. One being a c*ck up on their side causing my site to crash and burn lesson learned: back up your website, lol.

    Everythings fine now though.

I use HG as one of my providers...I agree sometimes their responses are a bit too technical, but all in all I can't complain.

My important sites I keep on a VPS, only lower tier on shared accounts.

It gives you a little more control and flexibility.

I use JaguarPC for one of my VPS -- they've been really good, excellent support.

Maybe its because I suffered through free hosting providers for so long, but to me it seems hostgator can hold your bloody hand if need be.

A bit on the technical side.... yes.... do you have to spell out EXACTLY what is is you want to do? yes.

But I've never had to wait longer than 15 minutes to get a live chat rep on the case. For example, when I just signed on with the I was stressing a particular ticket being o-m-f-g 45 minutes without a reply, and the live chat rep was able to get in there and get-er-done in a matter of minutes.

Are they the best? I haven't sampled enough providers to say. However, You could do a lot worse.

At least they're not on anonymous hit list like a certain other provider !

in my opinion, hostgator is the best support PHP code.
If you got problem with your plan package. they always ask you create a ticket.
to be faster, create a ticket and go to chat online.
I often do that and i see my problems were solve better

3 hours? Seriously. Do you expect less than that? Amazing.

As for server overload, I've had that too and worked with them to find the offending script and had my site up and running within hours after getting rid of the cause.

Well it's too technical for me. The site in question is just a small niche site not an autoblog. There are no strange plugins on it. I have a reseller hosing of which I only use a small part.

So totally not understanding them. I asked for help but none forthcoming. Never mind, thanks for the suggestions.

            High memory utilization.

            VSZ - 317504
            RSS - 54660

vsz is virtual set size & rss is resident set size. Whatever process is being run by the script being called in the index.php file is causing the problem.

EDIT: I understand you may not know exactly what all of that above means, but it's a memory issue.

EDIT Again: This also depends on the php handler & if the server is setup to use keep alive connections etc etc. Just giving you the ps aux results doesn't tell much, but if they only shut the account down by that, it's most likely memory as I mentioned above.

This is a common problem with web hosts that offer "unlimited" everything. Even if your reseller plan has limits, the accounts are still housed in the same environments.

I'd suggest finding a better web host. Typically, the lower the specs & higher price, will yield better environments.

    Hi wendyann!

    Hope you are well.

From my experiences only I have been with JustHost and they were excellent.

This was a couple of years back though and was for a site I no longer use.

I have used Blue Host also and they were good too.

Now I am with HostGator myself and very rarely have to contact them as I have never had any problems with my account thus far.

Hope the 2 suggestions help anyway...

All the best & enjoy the rest of your day!!!

Sorry to hear you are having a problem,

Whenever I've run into a problem, which admittedly hasn't been all that often, I just picked up the phone and called them. (I hate to have to describe an issue in the chat window)

I think the most I've ever waited to talk to someone was about 10 minutes.

Now, I don't think telephone support is avaialble on all their plans, but I have their business plan, and it serves me well.

One of the very few trustworthy, reliable and professional hosting companies that I have personally worked with is HostGator.

With this hosting company I can rest assured that you are given the most up to date and professional service which allows me (us) to safely and quietly grow my (our) business without much (for me, there is no perfect technology) technical hassle or worries and with a very small monthly investment.

I had a problem in activating a theme from themeforest last week and the hostgator support guy just found out that we have to allocate more php. I forgot the exact technical term for that. Then we got it sorted out.

HostGator went down last week for about an hour and it cost me a nice bit of money, but overall I have not had any issues with them and they're usually quick to respond in the live chat (except when they went down, obviously I wasn't the only person mad because the wait time was like 3 hours! lol).

It sounds like you may need to upgrade your hosting plan. I had that happen to me. Even if you move from HostGator, you will probably run into the same issue. Getting too much traffic for a shared hosting plan is a good thing! Consider the extra cost an investment

      Hi Luke,

I think my main problem is I am in Oz and see a fair bit of downtime as this might be when they do maintenance etc. Also can't just call them for the same reason. Live chat has worked in the past - depends on who you get.

I'm not saying Hostgator is really bad as I have nothing to compare them with. I have simply noticed their service is not as good - it used to be brilliant.

Do you know what the problem is? Sorry, but this isn't a good answer. A quick reinstall of what? The same scripts causing the same problem? In fact, there might not even be a problem.

The issue needs to be looked into deeper.

I think you misread my post, i was talking about what they charged me for the install.
my point being, it wont cost nothing to ask it they can fix it for you, and it might be fee, if not, chances are it wont cost much any how.

No, I read your post clearly. This is a memory issue. Sure, it could probably be fixed, on the other hand, the script may be using too many resources for them.

Charged you for an "install" of what? There's nothing in this thread about installing anything... The OP posted the ps aux results they gave, which shows that the scripts being called are using higher than normal resources, which for an unlimited everything web host is not very much.

Either the script is trying to do a lot of things consuming memory, or the server is configured for keep alives, it could be causing things to be kept in memory for longer. It's not a simple "reinstall the website" deal...

They may assist in tracking down the problem, and they may not.

Two more totally ridiculous posts - if you stop using things because someone you don't know on a site you've never seen - has a technical problem to solve....better just get a regular job now.

They may assist in tracking down the problem, and they may not.
I'm not sure why you are arguing this - when I had problem with all of my sites due to one bad file added (by me)...HG fixed every one of the sites for me at no charge. They explained what they had done - and they did it because I didn't know how to change the script in the file. They changed it for me and added it to all of my sites. That's service!!!

If you can't work with Hostgator support - something is wrong. Changing hosts won't fix the problem - fixing the problem fixes the problem.

I've found if you are patient and undemanding - HG will work with you UNTIL the problem is solved. If you are demanding, complaining, accusing - you may be on your own with any hosting. Not saying this was the case with the OP - but waiting 3 hrs for a response should not be a big issue. If you keep asking for help, HG will escalate the problem to a higher level tech and it will get solved.

This is true of many services - you start at a low tech level because companies don't need to pay level 3 techs to answer questions like "how do I change the DNS". Problems that can't be solved by the service reps get kicked up to a higher tech level. Takes a bit of time and patience.

Well regardless if she does decide to leave hostgator or not, she should still figure out what is causing the high memory resource usage on her website so she doesn't run into the same problem elsewhere. I recommend trying to get to the bottom of this now and seeing how things go with your current setup.

I have several servers with HostGator, a few reseller accounts and some personal accounts, when problems come up I always get plenty of help from them,no complaints whatsoever.
I know they are busy so I always give them time to respond to any question I send to them.
I can tell you that I had many different hosting accounts with different services, everyone of them have their good points and bad points, considering the price of hosting now compared to the price of hosting 10 years ago we can't really complain.

I've noticed a drop off in their support as of late. Let's not forget that in July they were purchased by EIG (the 2nd largest hosting brand in the world).

I'm sure after the suits stormed the offices and books they've made some "cost saving" cuts to staff to increase revenue.

    Purely speculation of course.

The OP posted what HG provided her, which was the capture from running ps aux. A "low level" support person or "tier 1" support is not going to be doing this.

I also clearly explained what this result meant. The values are not extremely high, but are high when there's little to no room for resource fluctuation.

Keep in mind, that HostGator runs shared & reseller hosting on the same environments, as do many other hosting providers as well. The problem here, is when you mix "unlimited" services that are in fact even more limited than plans with set limits, you run into these problems. The answer is not to "upgrade" as others have said, as the only difference is disk space & bandwidth.

This EXACT situation is extremely typical of every web host that says unlimited everything. Once you begin actually using the server you're paying for, you get shut down for "using too much".

Sorry, but when you pile tons of accounts onto one server, there isn't room for much of any usage other than static content.

If you go back and read every post, thread or comment regarding someones account being shut off due to high resource usage, the end result is that they were using bargain basement unlimited web hosting promising everything in the world to get you to sign up. You're also limited to the number of files, or "inodes" along with low CPU & RAM usage.

If the servers were not as jam packed as they are, then why the need for such strict limitations on CPU & RAM? I know I'm beating a dead horse, as it's been discussed millions of times, but as affiliates keep cranking new sales to them, who cares right?

EDIT: Also, the OP made 2 specific posts, that only 2 people actually replied to, or explained anything. The others are just basically saying that it's not their fault, but the customer is the problem, which in most cases, is the furthest from the truth.

Didn't mean this to turn into a bun fight, just wanted some advice on hosting, which I now have. (Thanks, you know who you are)

Very interesting about HG being taken over by EIG. Certainly didn't know about that. Could explain a few things :-) Funnily enough the issue has been solved by deleting a couple of plugins. Trouble is they were useful plugins that I bought on this forum. One was an interlinking plugin and the other a mobile site plugin.

That's probably why there service went down the tubes like all the others that were acquired by EIG.

I know from many, many years of personal experience that the customer is often the problem, however unintentionally, simply due to an overall lack of technical knowledge. I also know that, out of frustration, they usually blame the provider more often than not, for things the provider cannot control.

You're ranting about shared hosting, but you're leaving out the part where so many people are looking for inexpensive hosting plans and then you're blaming affiliates for promoting them.

Anyone can easily obtain a dedicated server...but they have to be willing to pay for it. When the price jumps from $5 to $200 a month, suddenly that shared hosting looks pretty damn good to a lot of folks, despite the limitations.

Hosting services "Unlimited" usage doesn't and shouldn't apply to poorly written scripts that needlessly abuse resources.
Run that same site with the same plugins on ANY other non-unlimited host & I guarantee you there won't be problems. Remember, the OP is paying for a reseller account, that is not "cheap" as their basic shared hosting, even though it's just as limited.

I don't know what type of hosting platform you're using, but I have been with known host vps for years now. You definitely won't wait hours for customer support try within 5mins, they go to work before they even message you back.

I personally feel that hostgator was and is the best hosting provider.
What they claim is what they do.
    Their support is really awesome.

I use their support pretty often and I'm very happy with the support.
Haven't noticed any drop in quality, maybe it's just bad luck.

I finally moved all my sites from HostGator to LiquiLayer (formally Vopahost) and could not be happier. Yes it took a little while but the changeover went well thanks to Brent who helped me to move the sites.

I stand by what I said about Hostgator support not being as good as it used to be (despite all the HG affiliates being so defensive), so I'm glad to be out of there. Plus I learned a lot about hosting in the process.

All in all a positive experience.

I had an HG issue a week ago - it was my error and could have cost several hundred dollars without urgent attention.

HG solved the problem in 15 minutes - great service in my opinion. I'm not being defensive - but for me HG service has not declined at all.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.
